USB Ethernet connector · · 0 likes

I use an Ethernet network and would like to purchase another computer. I have found a model that seems to meet all my other needs, but it does not appear to have an Ethernet socket.

I have found that you can get USB adaptors to plug an Ethernet cable into a USB socket - does anyone know if I would be likely to get the same speeds using one of these as plugging an Ethernet cable directly into a computer?

I have a Windows 7 computer, and I use a Linux server. Linux is case sensitive for file extensions, whereas Windows isn't. I use a lot of different software packages, and some of them save files with lower case extensions, while others save them with upper case extensions.

Is there any easy way of changing the file extension of a file on Windows from lower case to upper case or vice versa? Currently I only know how to change the letters of a file extension, not the case on it's own.

TORN city Twitter community · · 0 likes

On another game I play a group of players had got up a Twitter community on their forum where players could share their gaming Twitter usernames. This means players can follow each other on Twitter. I thought perhaps we should have a similar thing here.

If you would like to be part of it post your Twitter username below. I recommend doing this ONLY if you have a Twitter account for gaming that's not in your real name - though it's up to you.

Poll: Monarchies versus Republics · · 0 likes

Please share your views on the question of Monarchy v. Republic.

My definition of 'monarchy' is where a country has a constitutionally hereditary head of state eg. Canada, Norway, Saudi Arabia. Ex-monarchy is where a country fitted that definition before becoming a republic eg. Greece, Iran, China.

I don't include countries with a republican head of state who inherited his/her post as monarchies eg. Syria?

Games with Player Driven Economies · · 0 likes

I am looking to find one or two more games with substantial Player Driven Economies, and am wondering whether people on here play good games where there is a strong element of that.

I don't have any experience of C#, but have you checked out the MSDN help & tutorials - I have found these good in other areas. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/csharp/index

I mainly use DuckDuckGo because I don't like being tracked, they have lots of innovative features and I like their ethos. I also sometimes use Ecosia to support tree planting and occasionally Google when I have to.

Which browser do you use? · · 1 like

My favourite browser is a new Chromium based browser called Vivaldi. It used to be Opera, but when Opera 15 came out I stopped using it. Vivaldi was set up by ex-Opera people, and is very customisable and they are interested in what their users think. I also use Firefox and IE from time to time.

Programming ~ ·

I don't see any problem with this poll - it is simply a question asking whether people are more interested in programming for consoles or web. While the sentence isn't the clearest possible, why beat someone up for that?

File Extensions ·

The problem is, if I try to rename it, but keep the letters the same and just change the case, Windows doesn't recognise that is has changed, and therefore doesn't apply the change.

Perhaps this would be different in command line? How do I rename a file extension in command line?

I'd certainly prefer the SNP to Labour or the Conservatives, and Sturgeon is certainly better than Cameron, Osborne, Clegg, Milliband etc. If I lived in Scotland I'd probably have voted SNP even though I do have some concerns about them.

UK politics ·

I support independent candidates + some minority parties such as Mebyon Kernow, Yorkshire First, Wessex Regionalist Party etc. Unfortunately, I rarely get a chance to vote for anyone I actually support - so I will go by the individual candidates.

I can remember when the cheapest loaf of bread in Somerfield was 19p. Now, you can't get anything for less than 50p.

I use The Guardian website to get a lot of my news - although there is some Left-wing bias they do have writers whose views vary across the spectrum. The great thing about the internet though is the ability to read what several sites have to say about something. I look at The Guardian, Telegraph & BBC for many things.

Corruption on both sides, and how to avoid it. ·

Campaign finance is a key issue here in the UK too - the Labour, Conservative, and Liberal Democrat parties receive lots of large donations from the wealthy - and all look after the interests of the wealthy. We have more smaller parties with some seats in the UK who are probably less corrupt though - Green Party, UKIP, Plaid Cymru, Respect etc.

C++ Coding or Web Devolopement? ·

If you want to build something visual straight away you can use C# or C++ with the .Net framework in Microsoft Visual Studio and build a user interface using a drag and drop system and attach code to elements, so you can build GUI applications straight away while you learn the basics of the language. If you want to do advanced UI editing or like to code the UI you can edit the XAML yourself (an XML based language developed by Microsoft for the .Net framework
).

You can download a free version of Visual Studio from the Microsoft website, all you need is a Microsoft Account and it's yours to keep forever.

I would certainly recommend doing SQL and a server scripting language that can go with it such as PHP. Many company websites have SQL databases behind then. Companies also often want apps to go with websites these days so learning languages for writing apps would also be a good idea - Java is the language for Android, for example. Java can also be used for server scripting, but unlike PHP it cannot also handle the client side of a website.

If you've learnt HTML it should be fairly easy to also learn XML as well - this is a worthwhile data storage language to know, although not a replacement for SQL it has many applications in website data management and also is the base for many file formats including Office documents and SVG.
