I'd like to suggest an interesting feature to the game: a simulation of what a real economy would be like.
What I mean is that the items that show up in Torn start being actually produced by the companies. So that the player's companies can produce stuff that would be bought, sold or used by other players. We would have companies producing weapons, candies, beer, cars, helmets and, why not, houses.
That would increase the complexity of the game and open a lot of new areas for competition, with players having to deal with shortages, lower demands, cartels and all that.
I know that it would take a lot of time and work to implement but what do you think?
Well, I'm not a very experienced player, I'm in Torn for just about 2 years, but I've heard that there was a huge inflation in Torn and I have seen some comparisons in prices. Technically too much cash and inflation are the same thing and that could be solved by not creating cash. But I see your point, that would be such a huge change to the system, and for what I'm seeing a lot of players wouldn't like it. ;)
As I said if most items were produced by companies owned by players we would have a whole new challenge inside the game. We would have to deal with shortages, cartels, etc. The items would not be created automatically but someone would have to produce them using scarce resources that players would have to compete more fiercely to acquire.
I see your point, but that change to a market economy wouldn't have to be all at once. Also the idea would be to make most of the items backed by a company production, again not all at once. The items would differ in the amount that they could be produced as well as the costs and resources required for it. Let's take as an example the mansion: the company would have to buy the bricks (yep, we would have another use for them), we could even add some other things like concrete or cement, they would need a good number of employees and, of course, time. Those requirement would obviously change depending on the item.
As I said, that would give a lot of work to implement but I think that at least the discussion of the idea is worthwhile. For that the staff would probably ask what the players would think of it. I'm just talking about it because to me it would be awesome!
About the possible abuses, well, it's Torn, right? It's interesting and fun when things get dirty. We could have companies trying to create a monopoly, creating cartels, people breaking cartels by openning new companies to compete, we could have trusts and all that kind of stuff that make our lives more interesting. It would add a whole new dimension to the game.

In Cayman that scuba diving to find items would make more sense, since there was a lot of trade there with some shipwreckings. But to find should be extremely difficult, I mean like a lottery, and the items should be artifacts.
