According to the patch notes "The archaic storage method from 20 years ago has been replaced, this stressed our database servers, delayed our backups, and limited how many events we could keep before older ones were pruned. We now use a highly efficient cloud-based solution, the same one used by faction news and the logs system. "
It seems that the archaic storage method from twenty years ago used two storage systems, one for the events where items had been deleted and showing only those non-deleted items and one system that stored all of the events without any deletions. I know this because the "new" events log includes ALL of the items that I deleted over the years.
It is ridiculous to say that deleting items causes delays to the backups running. If the deleted items were deleted from the database completely the database would be smaller and improve the backup speed.
The old event log only caused delays because its size was unlimited and data could not be deleted. They should have ditched the "never deleted" list and kept the "cleaned up list" where items were deleted and retained that functionality.
