Medallions, Trophies, Ribbons, and Other Awards · · 104 likes

Concept: Factions can create awards to give to members.

When a member of your faction does something special - winning an internal contest, posting something particularly awful, doing exceptionally well during war, or spends time mentoring your newer players - it would be nice to be able to give them a special token of appreciation.

Using money from the Faction treasury, a variety of items can be customized, given an inscription, and sent to the recipient of the Award.

The items would have no intrinsic value, they do not provide merit points; they're simply vanity items to be given to members as tokens of appreciation and recognition.

The process of creating an Award would go something like:

1. Go to the Awards tab on your Faction Page.

2. Select the base type of award (Medal, Trophy, Challenge Coin, Cup, etc.)

3. Select configuration options (styles, colors, size, metals, etc.)

4. Add an optional inscription (for example, "To Duke for Avenging Those Wronged During Elimination 2017.")

5. Add a recipient.

6. Click the Create button.

The item would be created, placed into the recipient's inventory, and an event to the recipient (or perhaps the whole faction) will be generated.

Awards are a perfect fit for your Display Cabinet. Awards should have their inscription viewable, either under the item's picture in the Cabinet, by mousing over the item, or clicking on the item. Why show off some item that everyone else has when you could display an award commemorating your creativity, uniqueness, nerve, and talent?

Instead of the display cabinet, perhaps a separate Awards page could be added to display all of your awards, and a select few could be featured on your profile.

Awards should have different costs to create. A Gold Multi-Tiered Trophy would cost more than a Copper Challenge Coin. Maybe the least expensive awards cost $100k while the most expensive options (something akin to The Stanley Cup) would cost $5m-$10m. This would add a bit of a money sink to Torn - not a bad thing.

Customization Options

Example customization options:
[caption]Challenge Coin Options[/caption]
ShapeRound, Square, Octagon, Dog Tag, etc.
Design on FacePoker Chip, Star, Bullet, Rifle, Knife, Dollar Sign, etc.
MetalNickel, Copper, Silver, Gold, Platinum, etc.
[caption]
Trophy Options[/caption]
SizeSmall, Two-Tiered, Three-Tiered, etc.
Base MaterialPlastic, Wood, Dark Marble, Light Marble, etc.
Topper"1st", "2nd", Knife, Football, Salt Shaker, Checkered Flag, etc.
ColumnsBlue, Gold, Green, Red, etc.
Etc., etc. The image for the generated Award could be composited by layering images together, and one should be able to preview the result before creating the Award. Once the system is put into place it should be easy to add more options.

People like pictures and stuff. I made a (moderately crappy) mock up of what the screen might look like:

Yeah my MS Paint skills are pretty lame, but you get the idea.

Instead of creating an award every time you want to give one out, someone with appropriate roles in the faction (or just the Faction Leader/Co-Leader to keep things simple) could have a page of Faction Awards, a big 'ol list of them. You create an award, it goes into your list. Then you pick the trophy you want to give to someone, type in the name, pay the cash, and the recipient gets an event and the award. This would save someone a LOT of clicking / copying / pasting if they want to give the same trophy to 50 people.

Now that you've created an award and given it to someone, how do you see them? Well, you COULD utilize the Display Cabinet, and that would make sense. But why not have a page dedicated to awards?

Whoa, a new button! Where does it lead?

The button leads to something that is functionally similar to the Display Cabinet, but dedicated to your trophies. Clicking a trophy would display the inscription, when it was awarded, who gave it to you, etc.

Yeah yeah, I know, my MS Paint skills are on par with a drunken 5 year old finger painting on a wall, but you get the idea. This is concept art! And what a concept it is.

A player should be able to have control over which awards are displayed in the trophy case; they should be hidden by default, I think. A player should be able to pull a John Kerry and trash an award. It wouldn't go into the dump; it would just be gone. I don't think you should be able to trade awards. They're for you and you alone. No Stolen Valor here.

Or... Instead of using money from the Faction Treasury, what about a new company? The Trophy Shop.

Startup Cost: A few million.

1 Star: Create Challenge Coins and Rings.

3 Stars: Create Medals.

5 Stars: Create Small Trophies.

7 Stars: Create Large Trophies and Cups.

10 Stars: Job Point Costs Reduced by 25%.

Each different Award could cost a different number of Job Points (and perhaps cash as well, as mentioned above). This would create some additional player interaction as well as a new player-driven market to Torn. This particular company doesn't directly help your stats, but it could be a really great way players (newer ones especially) to get some cash for properties / equipment / drugs / etc.

It would make creating the same award over and over again pretty tedious though, so, I dunno. Maybe a new company isn't the best idea, but maybe someone smarter than I could figure something out. Having it just be a faction-spend-cash thing would probably be easier to manage.

Private Security Special: Bodyguard Contract · · 45 likes

The Bodyguard Contract: Putting the Security into the Private Security Firm

As initially mentioned here, a suggestion to replace the "Off The Grid" special available to Private Security companies: The Bodyguard Contract.

An employee of at a Private Security company may spend points to act as another player's bodyguard, with the length of the contract determined by the number of job points spent (I recommend 10 points per 24 hours). Whenever your client is attacked, you take the place of your client as long as:
  • You and your client are in the same location (both players must be in Torn, or Japan, etc.)
  • You are not in the hospital.
Essentially, any attacker must get through you in order to get to your client. A good body guard will come prepared and will med out as often as possible to keep their client protected. Such a bodyguard would have an excellent reputation and could command a higher price for his services.

A few other things:
  • An event should be sent to both parties with details of the contract (client, guard, contract start time and duration).
  • A client can have multiple bodyguards.
  • A bodyguard can only guard one person at a time.
  • A client should be able to cancel the contract at any time.
  • At the end of the contract, a report should be sent to both parties detailing:
    • The number of attempted attacks against the client;
    • The number of attacks intercepted by the bodyguard;
    • The amount of time spent "on the job" (i.e., out of the hospital)
Other benefits of having a bodyguard contract system:
  • Player to player interaction is increased.
  • Players with lower stats but a decent amount of money have the opportunity to defend themselves against stronger players.
  • Faction wars, dog tags, and elimination competitions become much more interesting.
  • Bodyguards can charge according to battle stats and vigilance; this gives older players a solid employment option.
    • Service records can be shared to prove that you regularly med out, for example.
Issues that need to be addressed:
  • Should you be able to protect another player without permission?
    • If yes, then the commonly used leveling targets could be abused for easy defends. This may not really be a problem, however, depending on how you look at things.
    • If no, I recommend an addition to the current trading system by adding a "Services" category (which can then be used for other job specials). Job points would be spent to create a service contract; if the trade is cancelled or times out, the job points would be refunded.

I wish more people understood this. Too many times I've been in one of those lopsided RW matches (okay, let's be honest, they're almost ALL lopsided) with the other faction up 1,000 points. And yet somehow I'm still being told "Okay, turtle! Okay, push! Okay, change tactics!"

Like, okay, but it's a pointless waste of everyone's time. I'd rather take the L and get it over with, then move on to the next contest.

Bogie is great and Sugarvalves executes his job quite well. Ched deserves some criticism, sure. We're still here though, so things can't be that bad.

What are you most impressed by? · · 15 likes

I am most impressed by people who are fun to be around, intelligent, can give and take a joke, are respectful, and don't take this game too seriously.

Basically the opposite of D3vl.

What if - hear me out:

1. Articles written by SugarValves are free.
2. Articles written by members of the Torn community cost money to print, but they receive a commission when players buy a copy of the paper.
3. When you buy an article you get a newspaper item for that article.
4. You can only read the article if you have the item.
5. Posting the contents of the article in the forums results in a DMCA (Duke Might Cream 'Ya) penalty.
6. You can buy a yearly subscription to have articles delivered directly to your inventory (or it could be a subscriber benefit).

If this post gets a decent amount of upvotes I'll post it to the Suggestions Forum where it will go to die.

I loved this show when I was younger. Silly and fun. :D Also played the hell out of the NES game but I don't think I ever managed to beat it. It is really tough.

Faction tag says "CR" so referring to them as "CR" is 100% reasonable.

CR's sustained activity is pretty boss, keep hoping y'all need to, like, sleep, or at least maybe go pee once in a while, but I guess not. :D

Come to this side of things, it's fun, less ego-driven, and we have nice beaches.

To the OP: Nice, clean lines on the ink. That's definitely taking your dedication to the game a few levels above and beyond.
