Imagine, way back when, there had been people shouting and begging folks not to put lead in paint, or use asbestos for fireproofing, or CFCs in name-a-day-by-day-product. And what if those people and their concerns were, uh, ignored for the sake of convenience?

New tech that does more harm than good. How appealing the end result is should not matter. Asbestos was effective, so were CFCs. We now know not to use either of those. We should know better than to use generative AI.

The human labor involved needs to be adequately compensated - data sources and data labelers alike. We must be able to afford the power and water requirements, without harming entire towns. It must be regulated in many use-cases, such as education. It shouldn't take hardware away from the consumer market, which has made electronics shittier and/or more difficult to afford. 

The list goes on, and the more items you add to it, the more you realize it's not something we *need*. It's frivolous and benefits only those who are lazy, don't know better, or don't care - to the detriment of all. Humanity is being gaslit into thinking it needs a bulldozer to move flower pots. It's inefficient and will break dozens of them. Just move the damn pots yourself, or get someone who can, or don't have the pots to begin with.

How many real problems does this unprofitable multibillion dollar waste solve? How many has it created? Ahh, to blissfully ignore it all for a profile picture. I don't know how y'all do it.

This was a vent post. Not really here to argue. No amount of reputable research will teach people to care.

Wasn't my first event, but the first time I went all out. Tried engaging a bit more in chat too, even leading pushes for one night into the morning. Can't wait to mess up my sleep schedule again next year.
