Adding Bacon (ALMOST THERE) · · 27 likes

What about coffee and/or cigarettes? I know cigs are bad, but considering all the other "bad" things we do/take/smoke/snort/steal in this case, I feel like they are just as appropriate as bacon, which would be right at home in Torn's market too.

DL OpEd; Companies: when to/not to pay employees · · 6 likes

Dear Reader:

The following is my take on when a Director ought to pay his employees, and when he owes no such obligation. Please respond, as I'm curious to hear more on this topic, but go easy on me :) My statement could be viewed as somewhat single faceted, sure, but it hits the main concept underlying this issue right on the head. Nonetheless, I do hope others can add to what I've said, and look forward to it.

Kindest regards,

DL

Here's my story & the bit i've copy/pasted from chat is my opinion on the issue:

I was about to join the army for about 100 days (or w/e it is) for the defense jump, but then went oh, shit, i only have 5,000 manual....so that's not going to happen.

I log on today, and see that A LOT has taken place in the Company chatat least as far as compared to my experience with Company chat.

I thought "that's great!" People were joking around, asking the new director questions, offering up nonsensical viewpoints...all merry stuff.

I realized that some of the employees were discussing what the pay rate should be...and I offered up the following, in response to all the chat I could see, as limited by the ability to scroll up any further:
DeaconLynch: omg amazing-the most chat i've ever seen in a company
DeaconLynch: so that's a win all around
DeaconLynch: yeah-my experience is no pay
DeaconLynch: the benefits are from the job points, and the trains
DeaconLynch: it's the directors job to get and maintain 10 star
DeaconLynch: its the employees job to keep a 5/5 effectiveness
DeaconLynch: employees job is WAYYYYY easier
DeaconLynch: just rehab
DeaconLynch: any 10* company (other than oil rig, tv station, private security, mining) has no obligation to pay employees--the pay is that its 10 stars lol
DeaconLynch: you get all the perks
DeaconLynch: 10 job points per day
DeaconLynch: and hopefully daily or rotational trains
DeaconLynch: and you are a very happy employee when all that is happening
DeaconLynch: sweet shops make very little $ too. all pay should = 0
DeaconLynch: you pay people when you don't have a decent star rating
DeaconLynch: cause that's their only incentive

The distinction often drawn between "Torn" and "real life (aka RL or irl) troubles me:

what if you said: I work at a law firm in real life and a sweet shop in Torn? This implies Torn is separate from "real life," but it's not. We have fun playing it, i can sense my fingers and brain making the keys work just as much as when I'm working at my law firm. I think saying that I work at a law firm, and I also play an text-based mmorpg called Torn where my character works in a sweet shop makes more sense. It's a given that they are both happening "IRL," no?

Not really another level...you just mixed up "doesn't" and "don't."

So, you're either

1-too stupid to proofread a post where you're insulting the posters clarity;

2-not proficient in ENglish because it's not your first language (to me, this is as hilarious as #1, b/c who tf are you to say, lol);

3-trolling

4-agreeing with champion b/c you think it's cool to do so.

Either way, you're probably a douchebag with feet.

THE QUEST FOR THE HOLY GRAIL

1-Medieval Helmet: There's a dent in it that appears to have been made by a cow.

2-Chain Mail:  Can deflect attacks, also doubles as a message board for notes attached to long range arrows.

3-Claymore Sword:  Property of the Black Knight. The Torn Museum's extraction team was prepared for a battle royal, but were able to easily obtain this blade from its then-owner with relative ease due to his unexpected quadriplegia.

4-Coconut Bra:  A form of Medieval transportation available to only the bravest knights. These coconuts belonged to King Arthur himself. Donated to the Torn Museum by Leaf_Bikini, leader of Itsi Bitsi Bikini.

5-HEG: We've all wondered what HEG stands for–It's actually a monogram* for the Holy-hand-grenade of Entioch. You say it's spelled "Antioch?" Duke says spelling is for wussies and nerds.

*Traditionally, a monogram is presented in first, last, middle initial order.

Same. I got it by doing no more than 1 transaction a day for ~4/5 days tops. Wasn't even trying to get the merit.

1-LMFAO

2- is there a spot/post (anagrams ftw) in this thread anywhere that provides any detail whatsoever to what OP said that pissed off Tiller? I'm somewhat amazed that I'm posting this on the 9th page (I read through about 4-5) and it's possible that all of this debate has occurred w/o knowing what was said by OP. That's kind of crucial to the whole analysis.

Of course...

Real life contains activities, one of which is Torn :+)

Sure. But when someone says, ah, "I have to do some things in real life, so I can't play Torn," this is problem. Just like whatever task the hypothetical person in the previous sentence was occupied by no doubt occurred in "real life," so did the task/act of playing Torn. Lmao. Not co-incidentally, atacking that statement is, by definition, departing from the concept most call reality.

Never underestimate the importance of asking the right question.

Nvm. Due to the sheer volume of clicks i've made on Torn on my laptop, while taking a dump is problematic to the above solution.

Just realized, I only have to poop in real life, never had to to do that while playing Torn. Problem solved.

Agree with you 100% about the happy boost instead, although it's tricky to put a $ value on it...
What I meant is, having the ability to boost your happiness = contingent on having 10* (for the 4500 Hap. for 30 JP).

Keeping the company at 10* is, in my opinion, the responsibility of the director, as only they can hire/fire, etc....

Pay is pointless in AN, Sweetshops.... it's the 10* rating!! Job points may or may not play a part (but most often do).

In sum it's a deal between the Director, and the Employees:

As an Employee: I want to trade loyalty, $0 salary, and maintaining 5* effectiveness

FOR

The perks of working in a 10* Company, which is the Director's end of the deal imo.

Answer: Always have to say everything that's on my mind.

Reason: I always have a lot of things I'd like to say to various folks, but often don't. Even if I am as tactful as I could be, and coming from a good place, I still know that most people who I'd like to have a dialogue with about certain topics would find a way to make me look like the bad guy and themselves look like a victim, etc.., etc... So, I usually just go about my business b/c it's the path of least resistance.

That all being said, it would be very interesting indeed to see what happened each day that I broke my normal pattern and really went for it.

Also, I'm just curious to see what would happen when I have several things on my mind at once...would I sprout an extra mouth? Speak several lines all at once? Speak in tongues? Speak one thought and fart the other in morse code? A choice that spawns all this fun stuff is the choice for me ;).
