Foreword

Hello everyone!
My initial plan was to make a small guide on merits for my faction, but it has quickly got out of hand and started turning into a long guide.
It is still WiP, so please check back later to find even more awards added.
This guide will tell you everything you need to know about merits, and will show you which ones to prioritize early on.
It is meant for new players and veterans alike.

Ever since I started playing this game i have been drawn to the merit system, they offer a sense of progression that you might otherwise miss in an older game like this.
Additionally they allow you to unlock great bonuses, like shorter education times, higher crime success rates and more money from mugging!

This guide will start out small, and introduce the main concepts of merits, along with a few quick and easy ones to obtain right away.
More will be added in the near future, so stay tuned!

N.B.
I'm not affiliated with any external sites mentioned, and i'm not responsible for what they choose to do with your info.
All pictures of merits and their requirements have been taken from the Torn Wiki page.

Introduction to merits

In this section i will discuss the basics of the merit system.

What are merits?
Merits are a reward you receive for getting awards, which are a type of achievement in this game.
These points can be spent on increasing certain statistics of your character.
The words "merit" and "award" are often used interchangeably.
Every award you earn gives you one merit, regardless of difficulty or rarity.

Where can I see all awards?
The awards button is located on the lower right of the sidebar.
On mobile you press the "awards" tab in the top bar.

[image: i.imgur.com]
You will be taken to the awards page.
The awards page is split up in three sections:

1. Honors
Often referred to as "honor bars". These are all separate awards, and completing them will give you an image that will show up behind your username in most places.
You can look through all honor bars, and see their challenges.

2. Medals
Medals are a little bit different than honors.
Medals will always show up in your profile, you can't equip or unequip them.
Every medal is be upgradeable, it will level up if you reach a certain milestone. Each level up will give you a merit.
You can only see the progress towards the 10 closest medals. (In game, but we will get to that later).

3. Use your merits
Here you can spend your merits on upgrades.

These pages don't show a lot of information, and can be hard to navigate. Luckily other people have made this a lot easier:
The wiki has a great list of all awards, and using tornstats you can track your progress towards each award. Handy!

Which upgrades should I spend my merits on?
You should ALWAYS get education upgraded fully. Without any reductions in education time it will take 7 real life years to complete all courses. 10 upgrades with merits will reduce this by 20%. It's not hard to see why you should get this one as soon as possible.
After that, it all depends on your playstyle. I might add a merit spending guide in the future, but for now that's beyond the scope of this guide.

Easy merits to obtain

Part one: Merits you should have started on yesterday
These are merits that take a long time to complete, and starting on them late will slow you down in your quest to catch 'em all!
These awards are:
  • Be married to the same person for x amount of days without divorce. Just get married. It helps share property costs, and gives you this medal to boot!
  • Stay in the same faction for x days. This one is self-explanatory. Important note: sometimes we might ask you to "guest" at friendly factions. This can be done without resetting your progress towards this award, as the days don't have to be consecutive!
  • Be a donator for x days. This one is up to you: you can get donator status either by spending real money, or to buy a donator pack from the item market. This means you will be able to obtain this merit without spending real-life money on it.
  • [image: i.imgur.com]
    This merit will take months to get. just go to the loan shark, take the largest loan available, and wait. Pay your fees when needed, increase your loan whenever possible, and eventually you will get it.
Part two: I can show you the world!
A couple of easy merits from all aspects of the game.

[image: i.imgur.com]
Train in the gym to get this merit.

[image: i.imgur.com]
Go to the city bank any make an investment of any amount.

[image: i.imgur.com]
After unlocking missions, try to complete as many as possible.

[image: i.imgur.com]
This is the first merit you obtain by attacking other players. There are many, many more.

[image: i.imgur.com]
The easiest crime to get this with is the shoplift-->steal jacket crime. I recommend doing that crime 10k times before moving on, if you are focussing on merits.

[image: i.imgur.com]
Win in every possible way with blackjack at the casino.

[image: i.imgur.com]
Cannabis is one of the cheapest drugs, and it has an extremely low overdose chance. (if you do overdose you get a merit for it, so this one is win-win)

[image: i.imgur.com]
Self-explanatory. i recommend getting the intravenous therapy course first, and then the entire sports science category.
That's just my recommendation, follow your own path.

[image: i.imgur.com]
Look through the city map every day to look for items.

[image: i.imgur.com]
A medal is received after only 25 bounties. look through the bounty section in the newspaper.

Part three: Coffee grinder.
These merits are cheap, but require some time and effort to do.

[image: i.imgur.com]
Pray twice a day for about 2 weeks. Leave some time between prays (most say about 8 hours). You can pray more often, but it wont have any effect on this merit. If you miss a prayer your progress will not be reset, but it will take longer to do this award.

[image: i.imgur.com]
I don't think this one needs any explaining.

[image: i.imgur.com]
[image: i.imgur.com]
This can be very cheap if you bet low.

[image: i.imgur.com]
Search the dump 1000 times.

[image: i.imgur.com]
Requires the Intravenous Therapy education course.
Use the wrong type of blood bag to get Clotted, and fill up blood bags to get the other two.
Empty blood bags cost money, but most factions will have a lot of them in the armory, and appreciate it if you fill them.

[image: i.imgur.com]

[image: i.imgur.com]
When following this guide you should get this one in no time! I recommend doing this for education as soon as possible.

[image: i.imgur.com]
Follow this guide if you do not want to get stuck in a certain class.
The 250 wins award can be achieved by racing normally, and grinding it out that way, or by setting up 2 person, short races with friends.
[10/12/19] literally an hour after I finished this part a new one came out for getting 100 race wins. Easy enough.

Part four: Do i look like a guy with a plan?
These merits are not difficult, but require some planning or coördinating with other players.
At the end of this part there will be an efficient plan to get as many of these as possible.

[image: i.imgur.com]
Get your health low before the attack starts, easy way to do this is filling blood bags. Attack someone that you know has very low strength (or a friend that has equipped a plastic or rusty sword), and hope you end below 1% health. (This merit is easier if you have higher max health)

[image: i.imgur.com]
Ask for help in faction chat. Some factions will have a designated target for this merit, in other factions you will need to find a player that wants to help out

[image: i.imgur.com]
Ask a friend to start an attack, and beat him while he has an active attack.

[image: i.imgur.com]
Check your battle stats, and find a friend that has 5 times more. (Or compare your stats using the faction tornstats page, if applicable) Let him take the following steps:
  • The target fills 5 blood bags to get his health down to 1, without being hospitalized.
  • Let them unequip all weapons and armor, except for a rusty sword as melee weapon.
  • Let them use xanax to recuce their battle stats even further, and use vicodin yourself to increase yours. (AFAIK this merit is calculated with your base battlestats, not your actual battlestats. This step needs confirmation.)
Depending on how much stronger the target is, you might not need to take all of these steps. If you can't beat the target using the first two steps, you might be better off finding an easier target.

[image: i.imgur.com]
Easy enough, just be alive at the end of a successful group attack, but don't deal the finishing blow.
Also unlocks when doing the boss fight merit

[image: i.imgur.com]
Duke and Leslie will be attacked by a group of players as soon as they reach loot level IV. The loot level rises with time. YATA is a handy tool that keeps track of the loot level.

[image: i.imgur.com]
If you lose to someone after a close battle, quickly fill your health with meds and attack again. this could also be planned with a friend, but this is just the easiest way to to it.
alternatively, find a weak target, run down the clock for a loss, and then attack them.

[image: i.imgur.com]
Proxima made a great guide for this. Every time you attack a friend for one of the merits above, you can ask them if they have the church mouse merit, if they don't you can try to get it for them if they set it up.

[image: i.imgur.com]
A retaliation hit is an attack where you hospitalize someone that won an attack on your faction less than 5 minutes ago.Either watch the incoming attack feed a lot, and pounce when the opportunity arises, or let a friend from a different faction, that you know you can beat, win an attack on someone from your own faction.

How do i get these as quickly as possible?
There are many ways to do this, but a very quick one would be:
  • Attack Duke or Leslie (Boss Fight, Double Dragon)
  • Get mugged by a faction member with 5 times as many battle stats, while you have the right amount of cash(church mouse)
  • then follow the steps for vae victis on that member (phoenix, semper fortis, manu forti, vae victis, friendly fire)
  • Get the other merits separately.
Part five: Fly, you fools!
Flying is unlocked after reaching level 15. This brings with it both massive profits, and new merits to obtain!
Optimize your travel capacity as soon as possible, [insert iribuyas guide here] will give you some great pointers to look out for.
This part does not really need a lot of explanation, so i will keep it short:
  • Travel to each destination 50 times, you get an honor for each destination.
  • You get an award for travelling 25, 100(x2 merits), 500, and 1000 times in total.
  • You get awards for taking 100, 1000, and 10000 items back from abroad.
  • You get awards for spending 7, 31 and 365 days in the air.
Part six: Jack of all trades.
There are a lot of merits associated with attacking in different ways, and using varying weapon types.
Again, there are a lot, so i will keep parts of this short and easy to read.

Finish Him!
Get 100 finishing hits with weapons from each category. Remember that only the final hit counts, so you can use other weapons during the attack.
Technically it would be best to do these after completing the combat training bachelor, but doing that would lock you out from getting all of these easy merits early on.
When you try to pick them yourself, always look at the weapon stats. Expensive does not always mean better stats.
Here are the best (or best value) weapons for each category, leaving out some rare and expensive weapons:
  • Rifles: The ArmaLite M-15A4 is the best commonly available rifle. Value options: Tavor TAR-21, Enfield SA-80.
  • SMG: Surprisingly, the best weapon in this category is a secondary: BT-MP9. The best primary SMG is the 9mm Uzi. It has slightly higher damage than the MP9, but is also more expensive and a lot less accurate.
  • Shotgun: Jackhammer. Hands down the best shotgun, but a pit pricey at just over 4m. Value options: Mag 7. Surprisingly most shotguns are somewhat viable weapons, so most are viable weapons to use. Only the Sawed-off and Benelli M1 tactical really lack in damage, but others are fine to use.
  • Machine gun: You don't have a lot of choice here, there are only 2 machine guns in the game (that i know about), and the M249 PARA is the only one available on the market. Don't forget to stock up on ammo!
  • Heavy Artillery: Minigun as a primary, Flamethrower secondary. The only affordable heavy weapons.
  • Pistol: Either the Qsz-92 or the Cobra Derringer will work fine. My personal preference would go to the Qsz, because you can take more turns before requiring a reload.
  • Clubbing: Metal Nunchakus, also one of the best melee weapons in the game. If you're really tight on cash try the Wushu double axes.

  • Mechanical: Chainsaw for high damage, low accuracy. Taser for high accuracy but low damage. choose wisely.
  • Slashing: Kodachi Swords are your best bet here. In a pinch, Samurai Sword will do too, but other options are just as expensive, or more expensive for worse stats.
  • Piercing: Diamond Bladed Knife or Macana. I recommend the Macana for it's lower cost and better accuracy, but that is just personal preference.
  • Unarmed: Use your fists or kick. easiest way to get this is to not really focus on getting it, but by simply finishing off opponents that are low on health when the opportunity arises. Or attack people a lot weaker than you are.
Other gear- or finishing hit-related awards:

[image: i.imgur.com]
Unequip all armor, clothing is fine.

SURPLUS [IMAGE COMING SOON]
Use 100 rounds of special ammunition. wait for a special offer to show up in the mission store, and equip it via the ammo locker.

[image: i.imgur.com]
[image: i.imgur.com]
Flatline -achieve a one hit kill
Pressure point - achieve 100 one hit kills
I believe the target needs to be at full health when you start the attack, but i'm not sure.
I think group attacks don't count if other people take actions.
I am also not sure if you can use stat reduction temps, i don't think you can.
If someone knows please tell me

[image: i.imgur.com]
Night Walker - win 100 stealthed attacks
A stealth attack is when your name is hidden from your opponent after the attack.
For details on how to maximize your chance to stealth check out this wiki page

Critical hits
You get a merit for various thresholds of critical hits:
25, 500, 1000, 2500, 10000.
Increase the chance of getting critical hits by spending merits on it, or doing certain education courses.

[image: i.imgur.com]
Spray And Pray - fire 2500 rounds
Two halves make a hole - fire 25,000 rounds
Use weapons that fire a lot of bullets each turn, like the minigun or m249.
Pick targets that take a lot of turns to take down, or that you will stalemate with to maximize the amount of bullets you can fire each attack.

[image: i.imgur.com]
Fury - achieve 10,000 hits
handy to combine with the previous merit. alternatively, you can try attacking someone with a high accuracy, but low damage weapon.

[image: i.imgur.com]
Riddled - Defeat an opponent after hitting at least 10 different body parts in a single attack

This might not fit here too well, but you can combine it with the above one.
Find a target with slightly less stats, or a friend with equal stats that has unequipped all items, and hit him with a low damage, high accuracy weapon until you have hit 10 different body parts, and then finish him with your normal weapons.
I found the easiest way to track which body parts were hit during an attack was drawing a stick man, and putting a cross over the body parts I've already hit that attack.

[image: i.imgur.com]
Sidekick -assist in 250 attacks
Oh boy is this one grindy. One way is to keep joining attacks from faction mates, but remember that group attacks will never stealth, so this might piss some of them off.
Another way to do this one, which i think is the best way, is to grind out NPC battles.

[image: i.imgur.com]
Deadlock- stalemate 100 times
A stalemate is when both of the players are still alive after 25 turns. Be aware that running down the clock counts as a fail, not as a stalemate. Combine with NPC battles, bullets fired and hits merits.

Run Forrest run!
Get a medal for running away 50, 250 and 1000 times.
During the course of a fight, it may become necessary to run away from your opponent (either for the awards or because you are losing--badly). At the top right of the attack screen is an 'Escape' button - this becomes active if your opponent fails to hit you on the previous turn. You may attempt to escape if this is the case, and have a chance at succeeding based on your dexterity relative to their speed.

It's been an honor to work on this project with you, and I'm genuinely saddened it has to end. This marks the end of a huge adventure, and while it's been a lot of work, has been very enjoyable.

Thank you for everything you've done for the Torn players, and doing it all for free.

API change for company ID? ·

I'd definitely recommend trying to do much of that on the script side.
What you do can definitely work, but I'd try to limit it to selecting attributes from a known object.

It would help if you post the parts of the script that cause the errors and what errors they cause. The following is taking some assumptions.

I assume you access properties using a variable like so:
call[prop1][prop2]. Maybe assigning it to variables in between. In that case you can still build in some error handling.
With error handling there's basically two options: the first is ending execution (or if you're in a loop, which i assume you are, using "continue" to go to the next item and basically ignoring the faulty one), or output default data.

This means all you'd need to do is add a couple rows first trying to see if what you're accessing exists, and if it doesn't, either assign default data to that property/variable and write that to your sheet, or continue the loop and act like nothing happened.

Alternatively, it's probably a good idea to look into try-catch blocks, which allow you to handle *any* error in a specific way, without stopping code execution.
Like:

for (const el of arr) {
try {
//your code here
} catch (error) {
//Logger.log(error), or some function to write the error to the sheet

}
}

If anywhere in your loop you get an error, it will be able to continue to the next iteration, and it writes out what went wrong.
You can also wrap your entire code in this, but if you do that it'll stop execution entirely if any error occurs, just like it does now.

API change for company ID? ·

To account for these kinds of errors i usually use a combination of optional chaining and checking if it exists.

Be careful though, as this can cause some difficult to trace errors.

You'd end up with something like this:

const companyId = apiCall.job?.company_id;
if (!companyId) {
//handle the error
}
//Rest of code

It depends a bit on your specific situation of course, above works fine if you just need one value but gets very messy if you want to get multiple values, or want to pass the job object to a function.

If you need multiple values it is often cleaner to check for the existence of the job object:

const job = apiCall.job
if (!job) {
//Handle error
}

//Rest of code

You can also use if (job) {...} Else {...} But i like the above way better because it reduces the amount you need to indent your code.

Because of how weird the API can be sometimes i usually have loads of safeguards like that in place, just try to think of which method will let you catch those weird errors as early as possible.

Fight not ended correctly ·

I think I came across a bug that caused a fight to be won and lost at the same time.
Relevant attack logs:
https://www.torn.com/loader.php?sid=attackLog&ID=bbafbf8b5dadd76d00aaa27c03a71a2c

https://www.torn.com/loader.php?sid=attackLog&ID=3116eb7d49bfecd78255acaf367bf1a8

The first attack Cooltops seemed to have been defeated my maury_00, but at the same timestamp maury_00 got defeated by TriggerT.

I'm in Cooltops' faction, and in our faction API it showed up as result "Attacked", but with 0 respect gain (and no overseas bonus). It did not show up in the faction attack feed.
30 seconds later, Cooltops is hospitalized by an unknown player.

My understanding is that if Cooltops was defeated by the last hit, and Maury_00 was defeated right after, it should've defaulted to leaving? Or at least default to leaving after a 30 second timer, where he is considered unconscious and can't be attacked.

In this case none of that seemed to happen, and it's almost like cooltops didn't get defeated at all, even though the attack log and API entry indicate that (well, partly at least, those logs look a bit off).

Revive Management ·

I'm not sure what exactly you're looking for, but I've got quite a bit of experience setting up servers and creating bots. (For a revive service a bot is going to be very useful especially).
Shoot me a message if you're interested.

Damage vs Accuracy · · 2 likes

I'd personally go with damage.
Assuming you'll be fighting players with much higher dexterity than your speed, the hit chance modifier provided by your weapon's accuracy will be much less. Source
Additionally, if you're going with low speed, I'd assume you're committed to being a one-hit wonder. Doesn't make sense to try and counteract the deficiency you chose to have with your build.

Personally I don't think offensive builds with very low speed or damage make sense to begin with, but that's just my opinion, haven't done the math on that.
My thoughts: dexterity and defense don't rely on each other, having low dex doesn't hinder effectiveness of def, and vice versa. Having low speed will reduce the amount of hits you get, so you won't be able to take advantage of your strength as much. It's the same the other way around.
Again, haven't done the math, that's just my reasoning.

User endpoint for multiple users · · 4 likes

The API limit is in place for a reason. It's definitely technical (as we've seen the API buckle under increased server load), and likely to limit excessive data collection too.
In a database, your API call is going to be a query, it selects the fields you want by the index (torn or discord ID both are unique indexes here), and returns that data.
If you select multiple users, it's multiple queries on their end, so technically no difference.

This is a problem that can be worked around in most cases, especially in a faction context.
Want personal stats of members? Use the faction => contributions selection to get data from many personal stats in one call.
Use the faction => basic call to get the basic info of all members, including a quick way to get a member list.
Use the faction => attacks call to get data on attacks.
You can easily do a chain call to get the start and end dates, and use those to query the attacks that belong to the chain.
Furthermore you can also use that call to get a lot of data about the attacks, including if the attack was a retal or not.

So i doubt they'll implement this, because it defeats the purpose of having a call limit in the first place, it isn't how API's work in general, and there are ways to go around it.
I suggest you take a look at the API "documentation", do some test calls, and be creative with how you can approach the problem differently.
From my experience, i could either collect it real time using faction calls, or it's something i could easily do for every member individually on a set interval. Mind you, you've got 100 calls a minute, so you could iterate over an entire faction every minute.

Fun facts about carbon chemistry · · 3 likes

I'm not sure if this counts as chemistry, but my faction, coaled Baby Champers, does drink Carbon every once in a while.. https://champagnecarbon.com/

In all seriousness though, the carbon footprint of most torn citizens is going to be huge with all this flying we're doing. A lot of flights are to CH2 (CH is the abbreviation for Switzerland), radical, isn't it?

Apparently the many diamond rings available on the market here are made from carbon too. I had my doubts, but they pressured me so much I crumbled. They drive a hard bargain.

Many racing upgrades are made from carbon fiber parts too. Although the more environmentally conscious players should probably steer clear from the raceway. That and the highly volatile personalities racing with high-octane fuel.
Be sure to upgrade your air intake too, if you want to prevent problems regarding CO-operation.

The vast amount of dirty bombs is also likely to make carbon dating very difficult (as is any kind of dating in Torn, but i digress), due to the elevated levels of radioactive isotopes in the atmosphere. The decay from all that does fit the theme of this being a rotten place.

Faction news ticker on 2FA screen ·

Hello,

I visited torn from a device i haven't used in a while, and i noticed that on the two-factor authentication screen, news ticker messages from my faction were already visible.
[image: imgur.com]

Of course this isn't some major issue, as i had entered my login credentials already, but i feel like this shouldn't be visible before being fully authenticated
I have replicated this in an incognito browser window as well, so i don't believe this is some form of cache problem.

[API Suggestion] Add revive preference to API · · 10 likes

Hello, I'd like to make a suggestion for the API: Can you add revive preference/availability to the API?
This would be very useful for two purposes:
1. Ranked wars and raids. Right now you need to visit every profile individually to check if the revive settings are turned off, and it's only visible if the player is in hospital to begin with. Being able to automate these checks would be very valuable.
2. Revive contracts. Being able to filter out targets that can't be revived without having to visit their profiles would be very useful.

It would be nice to have this added to the faction=>basic selection, as this is something that will mostly be used in faction context, but only having it appear on the user=>profile selection would work too.

Thank you for considering smiley

Switzerland Edelweiss Price Tanking · · 2 likes

The price of most flowers and plushies has dropped a bunch.
Very likely a sharp decrease in demand after museum day.
Usually the price rises a bunch leading up to museum day, but i guess it's been counteracted by the steady drop of Edelweiss flowers price over the past couple of months.

LET ME PLAY TORN AT WORK · · 1 like

As torn is just a website, there won't be a windows admin setting explicitly blocking Torn.
Blocks like this are usually at the network level. DNS filters are common, and circumventing those will likely make you unable to access company resources like printers, drives, and sometimes applications.
Another option is that it's set up to use a proxy server or firewall of some sort.
Circumventing these may again remove your access to company resources, and in addition provide a security risk.
Last likely option is a third party application that's installed and blocks this kind of stuff. If you can change settings in this app, please report it as this is incredibly dangerous (if you can do it, it's incredibly easy for a threat actor to do it too). Trying to uninstall it should raise a million red flags, and will likely get you a reprimand because they will find out. And its a terrible idea to begin with.

Honestly, I'm not sure what "god mode" you've discovered, but i suggest you take the security measures your employer has taken seriously, and use a personal device to play torn.
Bonus points if you report this "god mode" vulnerability to your IT department....

I realize that sometimes these measures are annoying and seem over the top, but you should also realize you're trying to circumvent security measures on a work laptop, just to play an online game. Doesn't sound very responsible does it?
