Is liberalism an illness? · · 6 likes

Liberalism is not leftism. Putting marxism under liberalism is like putting atheism under religious beliefs. Liberalism means free market, it's closer to capitalism. Marxism is an ideology that defends reaching communism through a strictly statist (controlled economy) socialism that strongly opposes free market. If you told SSCB that they were liberals they would laugh at your face. https://www.theguardian.com/notesandqueries/query/0,5753,-18035,00.html

The term leftism originates from the French parliament in the 18th century when the bourgeois and nationalists were sitting on the left side of the cabinet representing the oppressed; the aristocrats and theocrats sittings on the right side, representing the oppressor dominant elite. Then the nationalists and the bourgeois won, established the technocratic bourgeois of the colonialist-capitalist post industrial age elite order, and by the time they reached 1904 it was now the nationalists and liberals that are sitting on the right side of the cabinet and socialists sitting on the left, thus enabling socialism to be associated with leftism in the 20th century against free or corporatist markets.

I would normally not care thinking that people are confusing social liberals with classical liberals again, but you putting marxism there is outright fallacy. Marxism is statist, collective, inclusive, materialist, objectivist while liberalism is individualist, libertarian, communal, divisive, existentialist, subjectivist. There are opposite concepts.

So when you vote for liberals or republicans in your country, you are voting for different facets of capitalism. You are not choosing between equal distribution of goods and some kind of constrained conservative state-strong policies, you are choosing between if you should approach the global market in a neoliberal globalist open-border exploitation or strongly tariffed, policed, externalization, barbarians-beyond-the-gates style imperialism. Leftism has no representation on the actual political stage in the US.

I mean yeah call whatever whatever you want but putting marxism under liberalism there is just false. Calling people who are closer to your ideology (American republican's foundation ideology was libertarian policies brought in by a liberal (should be evident by the french revolution word "republic")) as mentally ill is another fallacy but yeah what do I know.

Does 'The Left' exist in the USA. ·

US is a bipolarity in internal politics that divides the whole electors into two camps. This is often mistaken as the right and left camp, but in truth the right has already established the main foothold in the governance of the US, largely thanks to another bipolarity in the global politics between NATO and Soviets. From the fact that whichever party takes its turn to be in the office, or what third party that tries to snuggle in, them being obligated to adopt to the main capitalist conservative state structure which is hardwired into the system, we can easily figure out that these two parties are nothing but the two different expressions of capitalism: Liberal capitalism and conservative capitalism.

Even though that 'left' means the camp that sides with the oppressed which doesnt always have to be socialist politics, but can also be something like social democracy or social liberalism, it still can't find a representation in the US political system. So leftists desperately vote for Democrats, hoping to at least keep the conservative capitalists out of the office. This doesn't change the main system, or the foreign relations, which is intensely imperialistic, however it determines what kind of internal policies or ordinances the central government will apply, which might be favorable to those who voted for Democrats.

Since the economic/industrial structure of the US has already been laid out for capitalism in its foundations, people dont see the economical side of liberalism, which is free market. They support it even though they are socialist leaning individuals themselves. This is why liberalism in the US is only understood as lifestyle, like personal liberties etc, while being oblivious to the economical side of it, which is an individualistic free market that might bring down those very personal liberties itself. In the rest of the world liberalism is seen as something that precedes capitalism in the same manner that socialism precedes communism. This is why most Americans end up thinking nordic economies as being socialist. They think it means "light capitalism" or something.

Sleep Paralysis and Lucid Dreaming ·

Great thread. I experience sleep paralysis on a weekly basis. If you guys want to wake up from sleep paralysis just try to move your semi-autonomous muscles to get in contact with your brain to send the signal that you are awake, ie just breathe (you can still control your breathing) as if you are awake and while breathing try to find that consciousness window in which you can move your muscles, which will wake you up.

Some people report that praying or thinking of positive thoughts also bring you out of it. You can try those as well.

The Great Debate: Our Significance in the Universe · · 1 like

Significance and insignificance are human made terms. It belongs to a being that has limited energy, differentiating between things that have high/low priority because it cant do everything at the same time due to its limited energy. Universe doesn't have such differentiation. Size matters, not in a human way, but in a physical way. A very small amount of energy might have immovable effects in the universe, through ripple effect or some other kinetic means. It has nothing to do with human importance adhered to it.

There are smaller things than humans in the universe and they are not less significant. Belittling yourself is something psychological or philosophical, so it would be fallacious to base it on a law of physics. Even the fact that there is no other human-like creature in the observable space makes people (and their actions) matter greatly. Thinking otherwise is just pessimism.

The Great Debate: Knowledge · · 1 like

I think we should ask what is knowledge as much as what is power.

The philosophy of knowledge is as many of you know called epistemology. Epistemology categorizes knowledge, by the way it's acquired, into several subtitles:
- rational thinking (apriori data)
- experimental knowledge (empirical data)
- observation
- and intuition.

Although many people argue that observation is experimentation, not making a distinction between the two for reaching factual data. Also many people include intuition under aproiori, calling it rationalism. So the general consensus is on the division between rationalism and empiricism.

Rationalism is the "if, then" kind of functionality we use in our minds, acquiring knowledge without requiring any other sensory input that we get from our 5 senses. Socrates uses this method a lot, asking rhetorical questions to people, and through asking these questions he would bring out the truth. This questioning method is called dialectic.

Empricism aims to be more objective, requiring more than one observant to validate the knowledge, or cross-checking with other data, sometime requiring the repetition of the event in a controlled environment. Some people argue that for certain data to be empirical it has to be gathered from a controlled experiment, while others claim that objective observation is enough. There are debates about this, for example evolution is said to be not empirical since you can't go back in time and re-make the whole evolution again in order to put it into experiment. Many people get offended by it, thinking that calling evolution not empirical is equated to calling it non-factual, which is not true. Things like this makes people include observation under empirical data.

Rationalists believed that all knowledge could be reached through this dialectical rationalism, thus claimed that we already had all the tools we needed to acquire knowledge within our minds. If I can "figure out" what a keyboard is the first time I see it, why should I need sensory input to all it's functionality? For them, knowledge is inside our minds, only waiting there to be reached. They believe we were all born with the ultimate knowledge, only forgot it during birth, and now we are not learning things but only remembering what we had forgotten. This reminds me of the Hinduist reincarnation philosophy, though this level of rationalism as a movement came around at 17th century.

Empricists and rationalists argued against each other for a long time, both in the end being debunked at one point. Phenomenology argued that you need all the methods to come closer to the truth, not just being stuck in one. Though phenomenology itself is based on subjective realism so I have my grain of salt for that one as well.

You asked what is knowledge but forgot to ask what is power. The person who said that probably meant "knowledge brings power", as knowledge alone can't be equal to power, it has to be used through instruments, which are also other means of ability. How does knowledge affect matter? It has to be through humans, and those humans need the instruments (technology and other means) to bring that into being. Is knowledge still power if you take the blueprints of a nuclear bomb to a caveman? He won't have the means to make one even if he understood the blueprint.

Objective realists usually approach the concept of power as situational advantages and disadvantages, while subjectivists like postmodernists often argue that power is just the struggle of different social factions. This kind of thinking eliminates the "just" and "unjust" but it also eliminates the perspective of "oppressed and oppressor", arguing that the oppressed are just oppressors fallen from power. I heartily disagree with this way of thinking since we can all easily see that the oppressed and the oppressors being positions in themselves shows the simple fact that these things are not interchangeable, and what the postmodernists called a power struggle between factions throughout human history has actually been the oppression of lower classes and castes.

To me power is an overrated illusion, a fallacious way to look at the world. What we call power is nothing but physical advantage given to objects or beings through being in the favorable side of the laws of the universe. An archer stationed above me on a high rock behind a river is stronger than me, only because he is geographically in a better situation, not because his being is higher or anything. If I was on that rock it would be me who is at an advantage. Knowledge gives you such advantages so if you have the means to bring it into fruitation it will definitely give you the advantage over others. But don't expect your higher self getting more powerful or anything. That will do nothing but to add to your ego.
