Like most determined gamblers, I’m always keen to find a way to beat the system, so here’s my guide to upping your chances of getting the Highs and Lows merit. To get this merit, you need to win 25 hands of High-Low in a row at the casino.
As with most things in Torn, there’s no quick win. And although this method does not guarantee success (there is luck involved, after all), it should increase your chances of getting that streak of 25 consecutive wins to snag the merit. I used this process for a week or two before it finally paid off.
So, grab yourself a cup of tea (or other beverage of choice) and let’s get started.
Obviously, play for the lowest stakes possible – you don’t want to needlessly lose cash. There may well be some stating-the-bleeding-obvious in the guide below, but I’ve tried to make this as clear and detailed as possible. Hopefully it won’t sound like I’m teaching my grandmother to suck eggs.
First, you need to create a list – take a piece of paper (or create a table on your PC or whatever) and list the card numbers down the left hand side – this helps you to easily see which cards have come up (and how often) as you play. Make a note of the number of each card that is drawn as you play the game. You don’t need to worry about suits – it’s all about the numbers. You’ll start to create a list that looks a bit like this (this is an example of cards drawn from one deck in one of my games):

3 - 1 1
4 - 1
5 - 1
6 - 1
7 - 1
8 - 1 1
9 - 1
10 - 1 1
J - 1 1
Q - 1 1 1
K - 1 1 1

When you lose (and you WILL lose), do not leave the game or you will lose the “data” that you have collected from your previous hands. Just click on Continue and start the game again immediately.
Continue to record which numbers appear on your list, as you will be still playing from the same deck. Do this every time you lose, until the deck is shuffled (more on this later). This will help you make an educated guess on the probability of whether the cards that turn up will be higher or lower, as you will have a record of cards already drawn and this should help you to build on your streak. Clearly there are only 4 of each number in each deck, so you will know when numbers have been “used up”.
When you pull two cards of the same number/value (ie two Kings), this won’t kill your streak, but it won’t add to it either. You just need to make a note of these as usual and continue.
What’s really important is to keep an eye on when the deck is shuffled. As soon as this happens, scrap your list, start a new list and continue the game. By now, hopefully you will be building on a streak. Don’t include the cards which appeared when the “deck shuffled” message appeared on your new list, as they will have been part of the previous deck. You need to scrap your old list and start a new one every time the deck is shuffled. It will be shuffled before you’ve gone through all the cards in each deck and will happen several times throughout the game.
The cards I find particularly tricky to guess on are the 7s, 8s and 9s – however this is where your list can come in really handy. Seeing which cards have already appeared in the deck can help you assess whether the next card is likely to be higher or lower.
It IS time-consuming, it can be frustrating, patience and persistence are needed and sometimes you will just be really unlucky (like when I pulled a 3, clicked “Higher” and the next card was a 2). As I said, the system isn’t a dead cert as chance and luck are involved, but it definitely helped me to grab the elusive merit.
