It's not easy to understand the majority of Angelopoulos' films. His movies are always associated with his own childhood, a chaotic, unstable Greece because of WWII and the civil war. It's necessary to read some biography or modern history of Greece. The first two movies I watched were "Eternity and a Day" and "Landscape in the Mist"(Both of them need not much cultural background to understand the contact of the movies). I was fascinated by its silence, profound long take, poetic lines, and symbolism. I wish I could find some fellow fans in Torn. That’s too much examples I can give. Perhaps I just give an example from the French new wave. Jean-Luc Godard’s masterpiece——Bande À Part(band of outsiders). The dance scene
My actual feeling after finishing this film is as follows: [image: cdn.discordapp.com] Landscape in the mist is some sort of "road movie". Travelers finally reached their destination and grew up. The sister Voula(11 years old) and her little brother Alexander(8) were the travelers on this voyage.
Just finished The Suspended Step of Stork last weekend. Not any stork appears in the movie. I guess the reason for titling the film with that name is because:
The film's setting is a Greek town near the border of Greece and Albania. The town is a kind of "waiting room" for illegal refugees waiting for the Greek government's admission to further migrate to other countries. Our protagonist, a journalist, sensed the trace of a missing politician, which had written the book Despair at the end of the century before disappeared, and might blend into the crowd of refugees. The journalist tried to seek out the missing politician and experienced the life, and culture of the town of refugees.
Some of the impressive scenes and lines [image: cdn.discordapp.com] A silent wedding was held across the river separating Greece and Albania, they couldn't pass through the river or otherwise got shot by the soldier on the border.
[image: cdn.discordapp.com] A group of voluntary refugees repaired the telephone line which is destroyed in winter, It symbolized hope
[image: cdn.discordapp.com] In the "pseudo-documentary" opening scene, serval refugees jumped into the water because the Greek government rejected their request for political asylum. "I began to think about them and wonder how does one decide to leave? Why? And Where? And I thought about the ancient verse, 'Don't forget that the time for a voyage has come again. The wind blows your eyes far away' " ----the journalist

"I,myself, had never set foot inside a house of this kind in my life. I understand very little about the events that were to follow. But, eventually, I came to recognize, when the density of great fortune is at stake, men's greedy spreads like a poison in the bloodstream. Uncles, nephews, cousin, in-law of increasingly tenuous connection. The old woman's most distance relations had come foraging out of the woodwork"
"There are still faint glimmers of civilization left in this barbaric slaughterhouse that was once known as humanity"
"To be frank, I think his world had vanished long before he entered it. But, I will say, he certainly sustained the illusion with a marvelous grace"
