if it gets to starving iranians it really is over. remember that fighting a shooting war is a significant economic undertaking. build missiles in factories with starving unpaid workers? and the factory needs power, parts, logistics, all those workers and their families need to eat too. people will just not work if they can't survive whilst doing so. 

and yeah the irgc can perhaps make a small subset of the economy work whilst the rest falls apart, with enormous human cost and violence, but if they're operating at a fraction of their pre-war strength then a lot of their leverage is also gone. 

yeah chinese support will be the one big lifeline iran could get. however china has enormous oil storage, bigger than the us's, and iran is still supplying small chinese refineries at cheap cheap prices. great for china. low production costs whilst everyone else's goes up. to move from that, china would need to really want iran to continue being a serious problem, but they've not done anything so far. perhaps they will, it wouldn't cost them much to bankroll iran and keep them ticking over. they could even count it as payment up front for oil iran is to deliver later.

It’s just a game of chicken at this point - yeah agree, but the problem for iran is that this game of chicken is slightly uncomfortable for the US and absolutely existential for itself. 

i think the key point is that iran can take a lot of economic loss but eventually even their authoritarian government needs cashflow to keep things ticking over, and that point is coming up fast, based on how things appear to be breaking down from the outside.

looks to me like the iranian government and society are running out of money. state oil company is 80b in the hole to the government. fuel shortages in one of the largest oil-producing nations on the planet. 2/3rds of working age iranians without jobs. inflation of 70%. Food inflation of 100%+. many workers who have jobs not being paid, or not being paid full salaries. supreme leader not been seen since before he was elected. 

at some point in the very near future they'll either need to defund the war effort, defund the proxies, make a deal, enter hyperinflation, or continue the fight whilst letting the country fall apart and shoot anyone who disagrees.

america has a very dirty hand to play as well - in the last 3 week ceasefire, 3 months of normal oil exports slipped out the strait. so the world gets 3 months of supply and iran gets 3 weeks of sanctions relief before the pain goes back on. iran needs to come to the table so this is a hand they can play, perhaps at least once more.

if iran decides to make a play and fires off a bunch more missiles, does that give itself a stronger bargaining position, or does it make the gulf oil nations more willing to take economic losses today in order to keep iran in check for the years to come? uae recently stopped all trade with iran, so, probably the latter. 

looks like as long as nothing utterly cretinous happens, trump and co can sit on their butts and watch iran have to make shitty trades until they basically have to make a deal to open the strait on terms favourable to other gulf nations, or come apart at the seams and be economically incapable of doing much at all.

Are staff enforcing CRLF's rules of the thread or their own guesstimation of what's good for the thread (or just winging it because it's an argument in one thread in one forum of an internet toilet game who cares)

I've long been of the opinion that staff should just drop the pretence of being lawyers and judges and adhere to the much simpler principles of:

• follow the very simple rules we've written down
• don't deliberately make work for the mod team
• don't fuck with the game's revenue

These are basically the rules anyway and trying to write an exhaustive book of laws and law interpretations in different scenarios means staff themselves can't consistently follow all their own rules, let alone communicate them to players, and it creates this bizarre impression of a pantomime courtroom with people enjoying banging the gavel and wearing the silly wigs when they can be bothered, and other times just guillotining someone who 'probably deserves it, vibes based' and when the community goes "wtf happened to the law" they pull the robes and wigs back on in a panic and put the headless corpse on trial.

I feel like they've been boxed into this position over the years by certain members of the community challenging decisions and they feel like they need concrete positions and interpretations to fall back on to justify themselves and it feels all a bit nonsense. IRL you need to know the law 100% because trillions of dollars, the legitimacy of governments, and billions of lives ride on it. This is a game and it's massively burdensome to determine from decades of precedent whether  butthole_plumber6767 should catch a perma fed for abetting or merely a several month-long ban, especially when the precedent wholly unconsistent and very fucking vibes-based. 

Drop the act, just say "butthole_plumber6767 created work for staff for years and being associated with cheating was just the final straw, don't make work for staff and you have nothing to worry about"

It's not massively unreasonable - IRL grenades don't do AoE damage, they throw out a cloud of metal chunks called shrapnel

ideally shrapnel dispersion is uniform to maximise the chance of hitting people close by, but this is not a certainty

there are instances of grenades detonating quite close to people and they're just lucky enough that the shrapnel completely misses them

so, being close to a grenade and only getting hit in the hand is plausible

what's up for debate is whether this is desirable game design

knowing torn it could be any one of:

• an unannounced change
• a bugfix for a bug players have been relying on for a decade
• a new bug that was introduced and not caught in testing

Qualified immunity means you can't directly sue a police officer for following procedures, and instead must sue their department.

This is fine because you still have a legal body to sue for damages. People get big payouts all the time by suing police departments.

The alternative is that people can sue police officers directly for following procedures. Suddenly police officers are constantly personally liable for civil court cases against them. 

Reasons this is bad:

• You can't sue people for money they don't have. If you get a $2 million dollar settlement against a police department, they are good for it and will be compelled to pay. If you get a $2 million dollar settlement against Bob you only (at best) get the money he has, which is not likely to be $2 million dollars. Also, juries are more likely to award big settlements against public bodies with budgets of 100s of millions of dollars than they are against real world people with familes and limited means of paying them. Settlements themselves will go down.
• Even if you are a good police officer in every sense of the word, you can still be sued. Even if you are right, you still need to pay for legal defence. This sucks. Leading to point 3
• Being a police officer is a job. People don't like jobs that expose them to big risks, physical or financial. It's why oilfield workers and underwater welders make bank. If you can liable for huge legal risk for being a police officer, then the job must pay a much higher salary to attract the same quality of officer. Either the quality of officers goes to shit, or the wages must go to the moon to pay for the new legal insurance they will all need to take out. 

TLDR:

- Lowers the potential payouts for victims of miscarriages of justice
- Either massively increases the cost of hiring police, or massively reduces the quality of policing
