“Know your place, Mongrel” - The GOAT
I'm gonna keep this super short but basically, the university I go to has this man who at first I thought was a little..off. I didn't think much of it though. He doesn't exactly have a real job but the university has him on their payroll anyway. Basically they ask him to go around and count the number of people in every sitting space in the library. Or they'll ask him to go and quieten certain groups in the library. That's all.
Every semester, we have freshmen and some people will sometimes outright insult him for his behavior. BUT immediately the senior students around stand up for him. NOBODY lets go of people who disrespect that man. And its honestly heartwarming because he's such a kind person. Although his social interactions with people come off as weird sometimes, he has nothing but nice things to say about people. I was in line at the cafe one day and he was behind me. I was wearing a harry potter t-shirt and he saw that and immediately complimented me and told me how big of a fan he was. I was getting lunch alone that day and he asked me if he could sit with me for lunch. He mostly made the conversation but it was so sweet. I wasn't in the slightest annoyed.
As I was heading back to the library with him, he ran into some senior boys and they highf-ived him and told him how great he looked and he immediately smiled and introduced me as his new friend. After that, he left and the guys told me how nice I was to have sat with him and actually have a meal. I said it wasn't a big deal because he was such a nice person. They told me how he's actually autistic and how his parents wanted him to be independent and actually work somewhere so they got him hired here and now he works happily and lives on his own and is behaviorally so much better than he was years ago. They told me to always be kind to him.
Thought I'd just share this. He's such a significant part of our university. Everybody knows and loves him. And the people who don't like him aren't welcome in the library. I wish more communities were this kind.
