The Guide For Newbies: The Basics (and useful) · · 48 likes

I’ve realized that some posts are missing some information that, while not the most important or necessary, are useful to know to someone as a new player, as they can avoid many more mistakes or having to through a series of trial and error. I am also making this post to see if there are any other things that I’ve missed.

Note: I am not very experienced in this game, and I do not provide statistics here. There may be errors and bias, and I may miss something. If there is something wrong or you’d like me to add, please tell me. Thanks!

This post is detailed about some of the (most) basic but useful things that a new player may miss out on during their first few days in Torn. This is not a guide on how to reach level 15 fast or on "all the things you need to know as a new player", if you are looking for these guides, I suggest searching for Baldr's guides or others, as there are many fantastic guides out there :)

Reading this guide may also require some very basic Torn concepts, including torn specific 'jargon' like 'Ghost Trades', 'Flying' and having a basic knowledge of the functions and navigations in torn. If you're not sure, you can always ask me (or George through chat messages)

Storing money

  • Ghost trade

    • Costs: IRL (In real life) energy to find a trusted friend

    • Effectiveness: Effective for temporary money keeping up to 6 hours

    • How to do: Set trade with a trusted player, place your money there and you're done! (Will store for up to 6 hours, however do not to never 'accept' the trade if the other player intentionally or unintentionally accepted the trade, as that will result in transferring the money you have to the other player a.k.a. you just gave them your money.)
  • Bidding

    • Costs: Your name will be shown to other bidding players, you may also have take trouble to split your money if you have a large amount on hand

    • Effectiveness: Effective in temporarily storing medium to small amounts of money (e.g tens of millions to 10 dollars, depending on what you’re bidding on,) however, you will have to wait until someone outbids you before you can try withdraw your money, and you’ll have to break large portions of money into small parts unless you want to run the risk of unintentionally winning the bid.

    • Pros: When you are outbid, your money will stay in the bank for another 24 hours with the allowance of any time of withdrawal in-between. Effectively prolonging your short-term money-saving process. Entering bids are free as well, which means as soon as your money is outbid you can bid again to make it stay longer.

  • Piggy Bank

    • Costs: Mission credits, obtainable from Missions.

    • Effectiveness: Effective in storing money anytime

    • Cons: You cannot withdraw money; you also do not know how much you have within your piggy bank.

      • I smashed mine and took the 10k before I realized what I had done. :(

  • Items (Xanax, donator packs, sellable items that hold their price, and items bought below the price that are sold to the system)

    • Costs: Time of selling/liquifying these items and risks of items dropping in price

    • Effectiveness: Depending on the item being brought, but as long as you don’t see prices dropping down, you should be fine.

    • Note: It’s best to buy things that are easily liquified (converted into money).

  • Points

    • Costs: The cost of the points

    • Effectiveness: While points usually can hold their value without much ups and downs, you might have trouble in selling the points and is at a risk of the points dropping down on prices

  • Torn City Bank

    • Costs: Nothing except time

    • Effectiveness: Effective; investing money in a bank gives you an amount of money (interest) each investment period; however, you have to wait until your last investment is over to start another investment (the shortest is a week, the longest is 2 months; unless you have 2 billion in the bank, it is typically suggested to go for week-long investments).

  • Stock market

    • Costs: 50 points to buy a stock ticker; do not have to rebuy

    • Effectiveness: Varies depending on person and amount; if you have a small amount, e.g., 10k, it’s not worth it, because when you sell the stock, it takes a bit off for tax. However, if you have a relatively large amount and are able to make good investments, this is a good choice, as you can store your money while also earning money, and you can withdraw it anytime.

  • Faction Bank

    • Costs: Join a trusted faction with a trusted leader/make or buy a faction and maintain it

    • Effectiveness: If you are the banker or leader or in other positions with access to the faction bank, this is a good way to store money; however, if you are, like most of us, a mere member of the family, you’ll have to call and wait for banker members to notice and help you withdraw your money, and you run the risk of being scammed or kicked.

  • Company bank

    • Costs: Join a trusted company with a trusted leader/make a company and maintain it

    • Effectiveness: If you are the company director, you are able to store and withdraw your money at any time; however, if you are a mere member of the company, you will have to wait for the director to withdraw your money for you and run at a higher risk of being scammed or kicked (as usually members don’t store money in their company). (e.g., the director refuses to withdraw)

  • Cayman Islands bank

    • Costs: At the maximum of 10k and 1 hr 10 mins

    • Effectiveness: Okay, you can earn that 10k back by plushie running while also being able to store your money in time; however, if you’re just storing a few million and not wishing to run plushies, it’s not worth it (for low-level players, they run the risk of being mugged).

  • Trusted friend or spouse

    • Costs: Irl energy to find a trusted friend or spouse

    • Effectiveness: A trusted person to help you store your money is the best, especially if they can withdraw their money almost anytime; however, you’ll have to wait if they’re unable to do so (e.g., flying or offline), and you run the risk of being scammed.

  • City Bank

    • 1-week investments when you’re below 2 billion

      • Withdraw weekly and add in more money

    • Month-long (the longest time-period is usually suggested) investments once you reach 2 billion

      • Withdraw once every time interval and earn off the interest. (Passive income :D)

  • Property Vaults

    • Costs: A property with a vault or a spouse that has such a property (Obtainable by buying from players, from estate agents, or spun from Leslie's wheel of Awesome)

    • Effectiveness: Easy to store and withdraw money; it might cost you a while to get a vault if you’re new to the game, though.

Useful places to find targets for attacking (not level targets)

  • Mission targets

    • Mission targets are usually made to match your battle stats so you can defeat them with more or less difficulty; recording down a list of mission targets would be useful, as they are usually not in the target list of other people.

  • Inactive factions

    • Factions usually contain players of similar battle stats and activity; finding a low-level and inactive faction could provide you with a list of targets to attack.

  • Bounty list -> from the newspaper
    • Bounties provides you with a list of players to hospitalize for money. This is great if you're attacking for money, or looking for merits earned by collecting the bounties. (E.g. You get awarded the Medal "Hired Gun" if you collect 25 bounties, and so on)
    • However, one thing to note is that not all players there are suitable for your level. If you are a greenleaf, find other greenleafs with bounties to attack. Do not specifically look for low-level players; take the age into consideration. When you find a low-level player with bounties, they may be a level holder, and level holders, despite their low levels, are very hard to beat.

      • A way of finding level holders is by looking at their age and activity. For example, a player with around 1000 days of age, daily activity but has a low level of 1 (and sometimes an antagonist rank) is almost certainly a level holder. Do not attack any of these kinds of players unless you expect to lose.

  • Outside tools and sites
    • There are many tools that are built specifically for building target lists. As new tools are constantly being made and updated, I won't place a specific list here. However, here are some recommendations:
      • Fairfight scouter is a very useful one. It also contains other analytics such as player activity, faction activity, and more.

Item(s): Personal computer and laptop

  • After completing the introduction to computing course, you can code simple viruses for 10 days per virus, you can use the computer to start coding, it will provide a little extra income when one is coded and sold.

City finds

  • Very new players may not know this, but you can find items in the city map, items will randomly spawn around the city and if you observe closely, you might see an icon pinpointing an item that appeared on the map. That is a city find, the best time to search for city finds is during awareness week, which will occur during January 15th - 21th of every year.

Happy Jumps

  • Since I do not too much about happy jumping, I will not much write about it here, however a useful guide you can check out is RazeW's Happy Jumping 101 - How to Gain Stats Fast!
  • Generally, you should start happy jumping once you've unlocked the middleweight gyms. Any happy jumping after 2 million in battle stats or before a middleweight gym would be unfavorable.

Merits

  • Merits are awarded for doing something or achieving certain goals within Torn, which generally give medals along with honors, or honor bars. There are multiple ways in which you can earn merits and multiple places in which you can use them. (For example, giving you extra health points)

Wiki

  • This is for people who play Torn on their computer.

  • For the new players who might not have noticed yet, there is a wiki in the top left corner next to [Torn]; clicking on it usually takes you to a wiki page concerning the torn page you were browsing about.

  • The wiki isn’t really filled with much information at this moment; if you are looking for more detailed information or statistics, looking in the forums may be a better choice.

Settings

  • This is for people who play Torn on their computer.

  • In the top right corner, there is a circle encircling your profile image; upon clicking on that circle, there should be a list of options that should appear below as: View Profile, Dark Mode, News Ticker, Settings, Logout.

  • By clicking on the settings, you can access and change your (aside from the typical security settings and etc.):

    • Attack settings: how your character acts by default when attacking or defending.

    • Icon settings: Where the icons appear and in which order

    • Navigation settings: You can customize your sidebar links to get around easier.

    • Email subscriptions: Can send seasonal newsletters, which often give you either free energy or nerve at the end of the mail.

    • API keys: Keys that share your account’s information with other software or programs, ranging from public only, minimal access, all the way up to full access. (People with access to your API keys also have access to your information.)

    • Can enable profile signatures, forum signatures, and update personal details (You cannot update your personal details anymore as it is changed in the new update. The area is now replaced with badges)

    • Self-exclusion: Those who are struggling with the casino and gambling games or related things, this will ban you from them.

  • There are other settings that can help you manage your account, including name changing, closing your account, etc.

Gambling - Spin the wheel

You can see this when visiting the casino

  • Wheel of Lame: Worth it → honor bar and other prizes (usually positive in terms of earning profit)

  • Wheel of Mediocrity: Worth it → honor bar and other prizes (usually positive in terms of earning profit)

  • Wheel of Awesome: Not worth spinning it once you won the honor bar (profit-wise); winning the PI is an extremely rare chance unless you consider yourself extra lucky or have money to spare. (depends, not a good choice if you wish to earn money)

Blackjack -- Don't play it if you're looking to earn money.

Specifics on gambling is said here as per Chedburn, the owner of the game.

Most of Torn's casino games are clearly rigged slightly in the house's favour, just like real life. The obvious exceptions here are Russian Roulette, Poker, and Lottery, which have equal ratios, or Spin the Wheel which actually produces more value than it takes in.

Buying/Selling Items

There are multiple ways of buying/selling items, the major ones being through trading, item market, and bazaars.

  • Trading:
    • Benefits: Fast, tax-free, generally safe and stable, offers direct exchange between players.
    • Downsides: Prices offered are often below market price. Sellers usually can’t set their own price. There are higher risk of scams and buy-mugging.
    • The process greatly depends on the trader.
    • Websites like https://tornexchange.com enables you to search for the best price lists and offers.
    • https://weav3r.dev/ is similar to tornexchange, but it allows you to search for dollar deals (things selling for $1 in bazaars) and cheaper deals in bazaars
  • Item Market:
  • With taxes now being applied, the item market is no longer the best option for buying or selling—bazaars often offer lower prices (since they’re tax-free) and more flexibility in pricing.
    • Benefits: Quick, fast, less susceptible to being scammed. (Good for fast cash or avoiding trade scams like Vicodin-for-Xanax swaps.)  anonymous selling (with a 10% tax.) Easy bulk purchasing.
    • Downsides: Often more expensive than bazaars, less advantageous in popularity since the growing attention of bazaars in the forums, scripting, and the future addition of bazaar dictionary.
  • Bazaars:
    • Benefits: Tax-free, relatively fast, less susceptible to scams compared to trading, lower prices.
    • Downsides: Still has a risk for scamming. Bulk buying can be tedious (requires visiting multiple bazaars). Despite the attention it has been receiving lately, it's still not as widely used as the item market, so you'll have to wait for a while before the things could sell.
    • Addition of scripts and other tools helps a lot (See Weaver's script, Nurv's script.) Tornpal (Tornpal is unavailable, RIP) and Tornexchange also have these kinds of services (shows bazaars/best deals)
  • For the best prices and offers—whether in bazaars, the item market, or trade listings—check out Torn Exchange. (I honestly think it's a great tool, not to advertise.)

Event Schedule

  • It is important to keep track of events, especially important events, where you may get the chance of earning extra income (in cases, even earning more than twice your networth!)
  • You can see your current schedule in the Calendar
  • You can change event start time (in Torn City Time) so the schedules can fit your IRL (In real life) time
  • A detailed page on Scheduled Events can be found in the Wiki

Money-making

Money-making is a crucial part of Torn gameplay

  • Stocks

    • Suggested to wait until you have 2 billion in the city bank before trying to buy dividends or seriously focusing on the stocks.

    • If you’re good at investing in stocks, go ahead!

  • Flying (import-sell) [Important for new players]

    • This is a main source of income for new players that just reached level 15. If you haven’t reached level 15, attack higher-level targets to level up faster. (See Baldr's Guide for leveling)

    • The logic is to buy things abroad for a low price, and then sell them for a higher price back in Torn.
    • Recommend:
      • Live in a PI -> You can use the Airstrip for faster travels, the overall happiness, gym, and etc boost will help in the long run as well
      • Use a Large Suitcase.
  • Missions

    • You can do it at times, but not too often, as it wastes energy that you may use for training. Do the missions (especially ones that include attacking) when chaining, attacking for a merit, or otherwise for a certain goal instead of just using the energy on randomly doing missions.

    • Doing missions early on will be helpful, especially if you earn enough mission points to buy a piggy bank. You can only buy the piggy bank once, and it is not obtainable otherwise; be sure to use it wisely.

  • Mugging

    • If you plan on mugging or attacking in general and do not wish to be discovered, wear a clothing item that has a ‘masked’ effect on it; this will increase your stealth (stealth increases your chance of appearing as "Someone mugged XXXX" instead of "[Your_name] mugged XXXX").

    • Detailed guides to mugging can be found in the forums.

  • Trading
    • There're different types of trading, specifically:
      • Flowers, Plushie, contraband items, and xanax trading -> This can be done through flying
      • Points trading -> You can exchange artifacts, flowers, and plushies into points once you unlocked the Museum (History education)
      • Items trading
      • Weapons flipping -> Flip weapons to a higher value
      • Ranked War caches, armor and weapons trading -> Needs to unlock Big Al's Bunker for this (costs 2,500 points)
      • etc..
  • Jobs

    • Take starter jobs until you have enough stats to be hired in a company. Generally, depending on your goals, you can choose different companies to join; however, while tempting, do not start a company from early on until you at least have a good hang of everything.

    • Here is a guide for finding jobs by VYNICAL Which company should I join? - The guide
  • Extra services
    • Within Torn, you can take up different roles various jobs. Certain jobs allow you to earn money through special services such as bounty reveals, friend and enemies reveals, embargo, and more.
    • If you're an artist, the graphics forum is your place. You can earn a lot through graphic commissions. (But note: AI generated art is generally not welcome within the Torn art community.)

  • Tip: As a new player, it is not advised to start a new company on your own, it takes investment and a long time (often losing money even in the long term,) daily activity is also required to run a company effectively

Factions

.... (writing in progress!)

  • Perks of joining a faction..
  • It is generally recommended to join a faction before starting one yourself.

Things to be aware of when joining factions!

  • Beware of Cache farms.
    • Cache farm - A faction made to extract money out of it's members through farming caches in wars.
      • Farming caches - When a faction finishes a war, the system pays them in caches as a reward for participating in a war. The money the faction obtained from selling these caches are usually used to pay the members and fund the faction to help everyone grow. In the case of a cache farm, the leadership sells the caches and keeps the money inside their own pockets instead of distributing it to the people who deserved the money as well.
      • There are different forms of scamming factions, not only cache farms. But cache farms is a common one.
    • Signs of a Cache farm: Small factions that do not pay well, have weird/demanding requirements or inactive/always changing/unusual leadership and management.
  • Activity and participation in warring/chaining are normal things most factions will expect from you. However, if they're extra demanding or have some suspicious rules you feel that shouldn't be required, that is a red flag.
    • (For example, paying the faction 'member fees' and etc. You shouldn't ever have to pay to stay within a faction!)

  • Large factions or Small factions?
    • Pros and Cons of a Large faction:
    • Pros and Cons of a Small faction:
    • End result:
General rule of thumb, if you wish to grow your account, it is better to join a larger faction with a friendly community (1m+ respect). However, as torn is a long-term social game, I believe the most important thing in joining a faction is to join a group of friends or a community that you love :)

  • Do not place more than you can afford to lose in the faction bank. Even the biggest factions are vulnerable to scamming and may have their vault stolen. There is no 'absolutely safe banks.'
  • Even if your faction is trustworthy (and I trust that many are), accidents can occur, and nobody's an exception with this possibility.

Final points

  • Train, train, train! Battle stats are as equally important as money in the game. (Until you find your own direction or playstyle!)

  • Do happy jumps (if affordable and your stats are below 1 million each) and train; for people who receive bank interest, they can spend the money on Xanax or prepare for a happy jump when they’re below 1 million in each stat.

  • While energy is important, happiness also plays a big part; renting a good property will offer you more happiness in return for better gym gains. (Private Islands)

  • Taking sports science or biochemistry can be helpful, so try finishing one of these early on. Sports science helps with your gym gains. By completing intravenous therapy in biochemistry, you can unlock blood bags, which are effective as a medical item and can help you with gaining merits.

  • Regularly check the news and the forums. There may be important or useful information that you could miss out on, and the forums contain a vast amount of detailed guides, tools, and statistics that you may want to need later on.

  • Don't shy away from finding a torn 'spouse.' By marrying someone in Torn, you can share properties with them and save a lot on the rent and upkeep.

Misc

  • A trick to city finds—the icons pinpointing the items on the map usually load before the actual map does. If you have a slow internet connection, this can be used to your advantage to find items on the map, as you can see the icons before the map appears (the map makes it harder for you to find items.)   This is probably patched..

  • When you are trying to divorce but find that you can't divorce somebody, try and check if you're still sharing the same property with them; if you are, move or kick them out, and you should be able to divorce.

  • Completing the Education: Combat Training course will enable you to start gaining weapon experience. You can gain weapon experience on any weapon, not just guns.
    • It takes about 2100 hits to get to 100% experience with a weapon.
  • Referring people allows you to gain extra benefits every 10 level your referred friend gains. (Donator status, points, and two items)
    • Referring restarts are against Torn's rules -- be mindful as doing that may get you banned.
  • It is generally not recommended to start a company by yourself early on. You would need a lot of money (stocks and etc), time (you'd have to complete the business education) and may suffer a huge loss or gain nothing.
      • However if you are wishing to take a risk, have the money, and is ready to do so, go ahead!
    • This is the same with starting factions, it is generally recommended to join a faction before starting one yourself.
  • Torntools is really useful in the overall gameplay. It helps in many aspects of the game which I will not list here but I recommend!
  • Do not download random scripts for Torn, especially ones that seem to automate a task -- it's against Torn's rules and may get you banned.
  • Read Torn announcements and patch lists, you could gain an advantage if you know more about a crime or an update -- it may, for example, provide a niche you could 'exploit' (legally) before other players caught up with the information

Seasonal Newsletters (This is easily overlooked in many guides)

  • From time to time, the email you used to register in Torn will receive a seasonal newsletter (remember to subscribe to seasonal newsletters, which is available from the settings on the top-right corner,) at the end of each newsletter, you will get an option to choose between getting 250 energy or 50 nerve.
    • This is very useful in cases when you want to train, do crimes, attacks, or participate well in a Torn event like Halloween.
  • It is advised for you to read the newsletter instead of skipping it completely as well, because many are quite interesting and informative (for example, leaked updates, 'insider info', niches in which you could earn money from, and tips) -- you might miss something if you don't read it.
  • You have an option (in settings) to request the system to resend the most recent newsletter -- just in case you've missed it.
  • It is sent seasonally. Once the newest mail is sent, all the other ones will be expired -- so be sure to use it in time!
  • Enjoy the free E / nerve :)
  • ← Looks like this

Often forgotten but easy Merits:

[Slim pickings]

  • Crimes 2.0 Pickpocketing
  • Costs: 50 Nerve
  • Do: Pickpocket 10 skinny people in a row, do not pickpocket anybody else while you're at it (as that will break your streak).
  • [HONOR] Added 'Papers Please' for creating a passport in Forgery

Fun

Cache gambling addiction inhibitor Cache simulator As name suggests, stimulates cache pulls. (You can get special weapons, called Ranked War weapons, from special weapon caches.)

If you haven’t reached level 15 yet, try focusing on reaching level 15. While playing Torn isn’t all about flying (that’d be a flying simulator), being able to start flying sooner is important as it’s the main way newer players make their source of income from. And also, Torn works according to real-life time; I found out the hard way. (Invested 1m in the bank for 3 months)

We’ve all gone through trouble when we first came to Torn. To me, this game is vastly different from what I had expected; it was bigger and, heck, a whole lot more complex than it seems. I hope this will make Torn a little easier for us all!

I will update this page when I find anything else

Elims team member level sorting ·

I am trying to sort in the elims team member page by levels. But players from level 1 up to level 9 are quite difficult to find because the search functions like this:

  • Typing "1" returns mainly level 100s (and Level 10-19) before level 1, because "100" starts with "1" and it is usually players with smaller ids that get listed first as most of them are level 100s, not level 19, 18-10.. nor 1.

  • Typing "2" returns mainly level 20s (20-29) before level 2, because "20" starts with "2", same reason.

As a result, players at levels 1 through 9 are effectively hidden far down the list, making it nearly impossible to find the lowest-level members quickly.

I'm presuming that this is unintended and that, for example, typing "1" should return players who are exactly level 1 instead of this...

and then.. this looks like a mess the further down you scroll...

So you're saying that you're leaving the game over being bountied... due to mistakes you made? That we shouldn't be allowed to bounty you over this mistake because you don't like it?

If you cannot stand a few bounties, I doubt you'd survive much further in torn anyway. You're pushing your 100% AI-generated "work" into an artist community that values genuine work and has encouraged and even spent great effort offering help to those who are willing to learn. What you are doing in itself is a great insult. People have every right to bounty you. In fact, we can do anything as long as it's within the torn rules. You don't dictate the rules here... -_-

And if you think everyone thinks that way, you are wrong. To put it bluntly, not everyone has the same unique way of thinking as yours. If they are genuinely willing, they learn and face the consequences, not complain and leave because they cannot take responsibility for what they did.

Your attitude here with your "😂" emojis and words (of which you are making fun of) isn't making people buy it either. If I were to say so, please leave this game.

P.S. Please don't use paragraphs as punctuation; it is pretty difficult to read. Don't use too much AI to enhance your words either. You can make it grammatically correct or fluent, etc., but here you are overusing it. At least try to demonstrate that you made any effort. I bet these ideas you are expressing are also partially generated by AI, which affirms your every thought.
