You should generally try getting a lot of shinies on your team, they increase your item luck
I used to get a strong pokemon with area attacks that damage opponents only, then getting lures to increase the odds of double battles, that way you get more exp quickly
From what I remember Mega Gyarados is really good, high attack and access to dragon dance makes it really powerful
For the final boss fight get something that can resist dragon and poison type moves, you'll need it. (like Tinkaton for example)
Catch more of the same pokemon so you can make them stronger as starters in later runs
And set up moves are amazing since the effects carry on to the next battles, however they get reset on trainers
