Zero to Hero: Effective training from the start · · 87 likes

Are you a new player? Or are you not very new, but still haven't gotten your battle stats over 100k total? Fret not, this simple step-by-step guide will get you there quickly and efficiently!

A note on this guide: A lot of great guides cover the different alternatives and flavors of jumps and training. The idea with this guide is to provide a very good overall recommendation. There are way more ways to train, some of them better in some circumstances, but going with this guide will set you up for success.

First things first: While starting out your gym gains journey, you should know that your gym gains is a function very close to happiness * energy spent (* gym dots, but there's not much you can do about this in the start) [1].

This means that training with 100 happiness and 1000 energy will give you roughly equal amounts of stats as training with 1000 happiness and 100 energy, or 10k happiness and 10 energy. This is key - since this realization will prevent you from training with poor happiness in the gym, wasting all that precious energy. So what do you do instead? Do not worry, the answers are below!

Phase 1: Enough stats for level 15

Your first goal, as many guides probably have told you, is to reach level 15. Apart from giving you a health boost it unlocks flying - which allows you to rehab (so you can eat all that precious xanax) and to make some money flying for plushies, flowers & contraband. The easy way to reach level 15 is to hit the 'levelling targets' - inactive players with high levels and low stats. However, even though their stats are low, they're not 0, so you'll need some amount of battle stats to avoid wasting energy on losing to these targets.

A good goal is getting to 200 stats each - or 800 total - since this will allow you to hit enough of the targets to reach level 15 within a few days.

In the first gym without any other bonuses, you would need 6500 happiness * 1000 energy to reach this target in one 'training session'. A very easy way to hit this number is to perform a so-called candy jump. The mechanics are quite simple: You'll stack 1000 energy by eating xanax on cooldown 4 times, then when the drug cooldown is over you'll eat 49 candies (75 happiness candy will get you to this target), then you'll eat an ecstasy to double your happiness, and then you'll train all your energy - 250 energy for each stat. This will immediately bring you to your target.

Shopping list:

  • 4 xanax
  • 49 candies (Bag of Tootsie rolls or Bag of Bloody Eyeballs, whichever is cheaper)
  • 1 ecstasy

With current prices this comes out to $3.3mil (xan) + $2.6mil (candy) + 30k (ecstasy). The easiest way as a new player to finance this would be to
A) Sell losses (~20 losses, this would be accomplished in less than a day, especially when combined with xanax) [2]
B) Buy a donator pack for real $ and sell for in-game cash [3]

For comparison, if you'd instead lease a 1000 happiness ranch and just train with your natural energy regen, you'd spend about 12 days reaching the same stat goal that you just spent 1-2 days on. Doing it in your starting shack, you're looking at months.

Phase 1.5: Reach level 15

At this stage you'll pause training altogether, and use all your energy on hitting levelling targets [4]. Weaving training into this schedule will make your journey to 15 longer, which will likely cause you to get your addiction up high enough to get kicked out of university, which is unnecessary. This phase should take around 3 days of attacking, assuming you're eating 2-3 xanax per day.

Phase 2: Happy jumping

At this point you'll have plenty of options, as a multitude of guides will tell you, but there are two good ways forward, one expensive and one cheap:

Expensive version: eDVD jumping.

The steps:

  • Take Xanax on cooldown until you're at 1000 energy
  • Wait until the in-game clock is slightly after an even :15 minutes (:00, :15, :30, :45) since happiness resets at these times.
  • Watch 5 Erotic DVDs
  • Take an ecstasy
  • Train all your energy,
  • Use an energy refill
  • Train that energy too.

With a Private Island at 3600 happiness and with the last lightweight gym unlocked (global gym) - this will result in 32200 happiness ((3600 + 12500) * 2) and 1150 energy - giving 10k total stats per jump, which can be done every ~1.5 days, so ~6500 stats per day at $15mil per day cost ($22.5mil per jump).

Shopping list:

  • 4 * Xanax
  • 5 * Erotic DVD
  • 1 * Ecstasy

Cheap version: Candy jumping

For this version of candy jumping you'll only stack one Xanax to avoid wasting energy regen - since at this point you should have a PI, the candy won't have as significant an effect as for your first jump.

The steps:

  • Let your energy regen to full
  • Take a Xanax
  • Wait for the drug cooldown to expire
  • Wait until the in-game clock is slightly after an even :15 minutes (:00, :15, :30, :45) since happiness resets at these times.
  • Eat 24 candies. If you're using refills, it's better to eat 48 candies for the jump where you refill, and just use ecstasy for the other.
  • Take an ecstasy
  • Train all your energy.
  • If you have the refill on cooldown, use it, then train that energy as well.

With a private island at 3600 happiness and global gym, this results in:
~8400 happiness * 475 energy (on average) = 1000 stats per jump, or 2000 per day at a $1.8m per day cost ($900k per jump)

Shopping list:

  • 1 Xanax (~$845k)
  • 24 * Lollipop or other 25H candies (~$15k)
  • 1 * Ecstasy (~$30k)

Note: You can also jump with more expensive candy (choc jumping), but this is less cost efficient than eDVD jumps, so avoid those and save that money for eDVD jumps instead.

Phase 3: Energy training

When gym training, the amount of stats you receive will be based on the current value of the stat you're training plus an extra flat component based on happiness. Since the first part of this will grow very quickly once your stats increase, jumping stops being effective once your stats reaches a certain threshold. This threshold depends mainly on the quality of the jump. For the two above jumps, this comes out to: [5]

  • Candy jump: ~30k
  • eDVD jump: ~200k

These numbers are for the individual stat you're looking to train, not your grand total. Once you reach this threshold, you should stop jumping and start doing energy training instead.

Energy training is relatively straightforward: You just pop xanax and energy refills on cooldown, training in the gym with the best gym dots for your chosen stat. You can also add energy drinks & FHCs (Feathery Hotel Coupon), but this is not recommended for the standard case due to the excessive costs. Happiness still has an effect for energy training, although it's logarithmic in combination with the base stat [1], but make sure to rehab after an overdose to avoid training at 0 or very low happiness.

That's it! Using this training schedule will easily put you ahead of the curve of other Torn players!

Using the candy jump without spending any real $ and funding it completely with flying (and/or loss selling) will get you to 100k total battle stats before your 2-month mark. Splurging and going the eDVD route will get you there before you're 1 month old in Torn!

Best of luck!

Note: There are a lot of details and intricacies with training that I've purposefully glossed over in this guide. If you think I skipped anything that's relevant enough to put into this tutorial, please let me know!

[Web app] Faction Tree Simulator · · 31 likes

Hello!

I've been looking for a simulator to play around with faction upgrades. Haven't found anything useful, so I tossed one together. It's very early, but works mostly.

If this is useful to anyone else, please let me know! If you find bugs or have feature requests, also let me know!

Note that you'll be presented with a prompt to enter an API key, but this is only required if you want to import your faction's current setup into the simulator (requires faction API access) - otherwise just enter whatever in the text box.

The simulator

How to use it:

  • Enter the total respect you want available
  • Fill out the core
  • Add branches as you see fit
  • Play around!
  • To share the sim state, just click export, the URL for your current sim will be put in your clipboard.
  • [Optional] Enter an API key (minimal+) to import current faction upgrades including challenge state. Requires faction API access.

If you like it, feel free to upvote this thread and/or add me as a friend! Suggestions for improvements are also very welcome!

Are you drowning in advice about happy jumps and training?

Are you considering when to stop doing candy jumps and start energy training?

Are you a new player, and want to know how to best spend your days training given your small daily training budget?

Do you think optimization problems are just generally fun?

If any of these apply to you - read on, for I have created the ultimate automatic training schedule generator!

Given your stats, gym unlocked, budget, faction bonus, perks, etc, you can now instantly generate the optimal training schedule for your circumstances!

With this tool, you'll also easily be able to predict the rate of your gains - which can be difficult given the very complex training formula.

This is how you do it:

  1. Fill in your starting stats, and max (base) happy, your perks, steadfast bonus, etc.
  2. Scroll down, and look through the preset training options/jumps. If you have a better method, fill in the details for that method and give it a name (will be stored locally for you only). Add the items required for the jump to get the budget.
  3. Then scroll down further to the schedule generator. Tick/keep ticked the training options that are relevant to you (for instance, uncheck eDVD jump (AN) if you don't/won't work at a 10* AN)
  4. Choose target stat, days, budget and precision. Precision Low is generally recommended for experimentation, since high is only marginally better and takes a long time (due to the exponential search space of this optimization problem).
  5. Look at the training schedule, and marvel at the technology, and if you're not a new player, be sad about how you've chosen a suboptimal path when you first started out :)

To make the search better, narrow the amount of options in the included presets - this will make the search space smaller, and therefore able to search more combinations. So you can experiment by unticking options that would be unlikely for you to consider and potentially get better results.

Note: You can use this tool fine without any API key. If you want daily prices on points/items, plus automatic loading of your own stats - you'll need an API key of level "limited" or higher. As the ToS mentions, this key will only ever be sent to torn servers, and will be stored locally on your device. Any data produced by this tool is only ever stored on your device.

I've spent a lot of time and effort on this tool, and I would appreciate any feedback or input!

The tool is available at https://gongtools.dev/training

Good luck in your training journey!

I was also curious about this so built https://gongtools.dev/combat, to simulate combat with different stat builds and gear setups. Also on top of proxima's simulator, which was really cool but not super user friendly - and lacking RW support.

Feel free to take a look if the results in that sim matches your results, would be interesting!

Did anyone regret delaying the 2B bank investment? · · 3 likes

I've never used the bank. It's not very hard to outperform the bank with at least 10x doing trading. Putting my first 2b in the bank would have made my next billion way way slower than what it was.

If you can't make more than the bank trading on average (this is key) then use the bank.

People generally like the bank cause it's effortless and risk free, not because it's particularly good compared to active ways of making money.

The debuff is a longer than usual drug cooldown, rehab doesn't help with that. ODs also give more addiction than others, so that's another reason to rehab if you care about addiction effects.

I see that you're not interested in any discussion. I can also see the vast amount of numbers you've listed, but the point remains that you're comparing different things.

I also acknowledge that you're not interested in further discussion, so this post is more aimed towards other users who find this discussion and reasoning interesting.

You also like to throw insults around instead of actually trying to understand the reasoning and methodology behind these recommendations, which I don't see as a serious attempt at discussion. To me this reads way more like "I've played for several years so I'm right because reasons". Gym gains aren't a mystery, it's all maths. Given the many options of growth in Torn it's however not straightforward, but comes with many different subtle nuances in priorities. This guide is intended to help users find a very good path early on, but if you want to deviate by researching harder that's very possible! I've probably read most of the guides available on gym training and happy jumping, and it's a lot. For new players it can be daunting. I wrote this guide to help out players who want to avoid common pitfalls without having to spend hours researching different options and priorities.

With that out of the way, here's my calculation and reasoning:

  • If you're doing edvd jumps, you're spending $20m and a 32h booster cooldown on top of the regular energy (xan, refills, which you'd use either way)
  • An edvd jump lets you spend 1150e every 32h
  • Ecstasy has roughly 5% OD rate. On average this means that an edvd jump has 5% total lower gains. This comes in the form of very large variance, but mathematically it's a simple 5%. In a faction with low OD reduction this is even higher. Many players are also risk averse, so in practice most users would probably prefer to not take this 5% risk even if it comes with a very slight edge.
  • We will use a fully upgraded PI at 5025 happy - since that's a more cost efficient investment than edvds either way if you want gym gains. This adds up to 35050 happy: 2 * (5025 + 5 * 2500)

To compare energy training fairly against edvd jumps, you should not discount the spent booster cooldown or money, since that could be put towards either energy training, crime experience, education reduction etc etc, all which fuels growth in Torn. Therefore, when attempting to find the breakeven point between edvd jumps and energy training, you should factor in spending the same amount of money and booster cooldown for energy training as you are on jumping. This is to fairly account for money and booster cooldown spent. What you then do with your money and booster cooldown is up to you, for most players it's probably better to transition to alcohol unless you want to prioritize your gym gains very highly. This does not change the equation - since if you do switch over to alcohol it means that you value your money and booster cd more highly than what the jump gains provide!

For energy training:

  • Every 24h you gain 720 natural regen, 750 xan energy and 150 refill energy. This adds up to 1620 energy
  • This equals 2160 energy over a 32h period (to compare against edvd jumps): 1620 * 32 / 24.
  • To spend $20m and 32h booster cd, you can use 16 cans of crocozade. This will total the 32h energy gain to 2400e (no voracity) or 2520e (50% voracity)
  • This means that to fairly compare HJs to e-training we will use 2520 or 2400 energy.
  • We will use the fully upgraded PI here as well: 5025 happy.

Which gym, perks, steadfast etc you use is irrelevant, since those are flatly added and does not change the ratio between HJs and e training. I'll use Force training, similar perks and 10% steadfast to gain comparable numbers are you had.

At 200k

HJ: 33137 stats, 31480 after OD risk

e-training (2400): 28539 stats

e-training (2520): 29692 stats

Happy jumping comes with a 10% edge against non-voracity training or a 6% edge against voracity training.

At 250k

HJ: 36180 stats, 34371 after OD risk

e-training: (2400): 34362 stats

e-training: (2520): 35688 stats

Happy jumping comes with a 0.02% edge against non-voracity training or a 4% loss against voracity training.

This means that happy jumping is still technically stronger at 200k, assuming you have no voracity. The reason I still find the recommendation good to stop jumping at that point is that the edge is small enough that the upsides of energy training are worth more:

  • More flexibility on spending your booster cooldown
  • More gym gains
  • Less risk with OD on both ecstasy and xan stacking

This is all a lot of nuance, and the reason I didn't include this in the guide is that there are plenty of great guides if you're interested in these details - I wanted explicitly to provide clear guidance without the player having to grasp all these nuances and edge-cases.

Zero to Hero: Effective training from the start · · 1 like

I appreciate the effort in replying. However, I still disagree. There are a couple of points that you're missing:

  • Jumping is more susceptible to losses from OD - both because xtc has a higher OD risk than Xan, and because you'll not only lose the potential gain from the xan, you'll also lose your full or partial stack of energy when ODing.
  • Jumping spends less energy. In the early game this causes you to miss out on gym XP gains, and to contributions for faction challenges in gym energy spent
  • If you want a fair comparison you should use more energy in energy training - since the money and booster cd spent on edvds can instead be spent on cans. I don't recommend this however, it's probably better for most players to stop using booster cd for gym gains at this point, and instead use it for alcohol to progress CE.
  • At the point where you're spamming jumps you should most definitely be in a fully upgraded PI, since that costs a fraction of jumping, which skews the calculation further.

Taking all this into account makes the breakeven point lower than 300k, exactly how much lower is up for debate because it's hard to quantify the exact value of your booster cooldown, your gym XP gains, or the OD risk, but stopping edvd jumps at 200k is a very reasonable, which probably is why lots of guides recommend it, including Baldr.

Zero to Hero: Effective training from the start · · 1 like

Several points here:

  • When to stop jumping: The recommendations in this guide are based on math by Vladar. You also say that you should follow other guides, and that Baldr recommends the same (or very similar) thresholds as I do, and then you go ahead and recommend something differently altogether?
  • This guide is only covering the early stages. I intentionally skip over any consumables / SE stage of training. Also the "consumable stage" is comletely optional, and if you want to optimize your long-term gains you should never use cans/fhcs for gym training, but instead save and invest for more SEs once you get to the SE stage - see this excellent guide on the topic: https://www.torn.com/forums.php#/p=threads&f=61&t=16276503&b=0&a=0
  • I'm very new, yes, but I've also optimized my gains a lot. At 2 month I was at 500k TBS, now at slightly above 6 months I'm at 28m TBS, all without buying a single DP, I do think this qualify me a bit for recommending how to train in the early game. Plus my recommendations are based on math that's available for anyone to dispute or verify.

The point of this guide is to give newbies a short and easy way to train very close to optimally, and I don't see any evidence in your response that counters this.
