Listen buddy, I wasn’t going to comment on this, but I have to say something because I don’t think it’s fair to criticize older players who make forum posts based on their experience simply because you personally managed to do something differently.
I haven’t been playing Torn for that long either, but when I was starting out, I probably read well over 100 forum posts. A lot of them were extremely helpful. They taught me things I would never have figured out on my own, and I was also lucky enough to meet helpful faction members who taught me a lot.
Regarding the company point, I think you are arguing against something that wasn’t necessarily being said.
Yes, you CAN run an AN without completing all of the business education. Your experience proves that. But saying “you can do it” is very different from saying “a new player should do it.”
With the relevant business education and perks, you can progress your company stars more efficiently. Without that education, you may still progress, but it can take significantly longer because lifetime sales and other company mechanics become more important. Obviously, there are other factors involved as well.
That is why experienced players generally tell a new player NOT to rush into owning a company.
A new player has much more important things to spend their education time and resources on. For example, IV Therapy gives access to blood banks, while gym/passive-gain education can be extremely valuable for early progression. If you immediately invest your education into business courses, you may be delaying education that benefits your overall character development much more.
There are also better ways for a new player to experience company benefits without owning one. You can simply work for a good company and use the job benefits to progress your character.
If I were starting Torn again, I would seriously consider going through the Music Store route to get the energy reduction needed to unlock gyms, then use city jobs and education strategically to build my character. There are many different progression paths, and owning a company as a brand-new player is certainly not the only — or necessarily the best — one.
So I agree with one part of what you’re saying:
“You can run an AN without complete business education” is too absolute if you mean it literally.
But that doesn’t make the advice from older players “B.S.”
Their advice is generally about what is optimal or recommended for a new player, not whether something is technically possible.
And honestly, your own example proves that distinction. You said yourself that you have now completed almost half of the education. So you didn’t demonstrate that education is irrelevant — you demonstrated that it is possible to start without having all of it.
There is a huge difference between:
“It can be done.”
AND
“It is the best thing for a new player to do.”
Those two statements shouldn’t be treated as the same thing.
