Welcome to Torn! If you’re here, you’ve probably just started exploring the game and realized how overwhelming it can feel. Torn is a text‑based crime RPG with layers of mechanics, and many players have been here for years. The most important thing to understand right away is that Torn is a marathon, not a sprint. Progress is slow, but every smart choice you make early on will compound over time. This guide is here to walk you through your first weeks, answer the most common questions, and help you avoid mistakes that can set you back.
Experience points in Torn come from crimes, gym training, and combat. The fastest way to level up is by attacking other players and choosing the “Leave” option after you win, since this grants full experience. Your immediate goal should be reaching level fifteen, because this unlocks travel and rehab, both of which are critical for making money and managing drug use. After level fifteen, you should slow down and focus on building your stats. Levels don’t make you stronger — stats do — and rushing ahead without training will leave you weak compared to your peers.
Battle Stats and Training
Your battle stats are the foundation of your strength in Torn. Training in the gym is the primary way to build them, and you should be doing this every day. The amount of stats you gain from training is directly influenced by your happiness, which is why housing is so important. Renting the best property you can afford will maximize your happiness and therefore your stat gains. Items like candy and DVDs can also temporarily boost happiness before training sessions. Because stat growth is exponential, starting strong will give you a huge advantage over players who train inefficiently.
Combat and Equipment
Fighting is a big part of Torn, but gear alone won’t win battles. Stats matter far more than weapons or armor. That said, having solid equipment gives you an edge against opponents with similar stats. For melee, the Macana and Diamond Bladed Knife are excellent choices. For secondary weapons, the BT‑MP9 is widely considered one of the best options. For primary weapons, the Enfield SA‑80 is a reliable starter, though you’ll eventually want to upgrade. Armor should be upgraded gradually as funds allow, starting with leather sets. Remember that even the best gear won’t save you if your stats are lower than your opponent’s.
Money is one of the most important resources in Torn, but it’s also one of the easiest things to lose if you’re careless. In the early game, your best sources of income are crimes, selling losses to stronger players, and joining a faction that provides perks. Once you reach level fifteen, the real money begins with travel. By flying to other countries, you can buy flowers and plushies cheaply and sell them in Torn for a huge profit. This is the backbone of many players’ fortunes.
Keeping your money safe is just as important as earning it. Cash in hand can be mugged, so don’t carry large amounts around. Early on, a good strategy is to convert cash into points or items, since these cannot be stolen. Later, haveng a private island with a vault or using the Cayman Islands offshore bank (available at level fifteen) will give you secure storage. Always remember that Torn allows scamming, so double‑check every trade before you confirm it.
