[CoC] City of Crime Play-by-Post - Main Rules · · 3 likes

Hello,

Back in the 90s, Play-by-Post RPGs on Forums were very popular.

I miss the vibe and think Torn and its wonderful forum is the perfect place to renew with the tradition!

Especially to have something fun to do while waiting on those long flights to UAE.

Some intro for the newbies and returning PbP players.

What is Play-by-Post?

You probably have heard of tabletop RPGs like Dungeon and Dragons? Play-by-Post is in essence similar at the exception that we focus on building up the story! No complicated rules and character sheets! Everyone is a little of a Game Master and responsible for the development of their own character and story around it. The Game Master (me, Isurus and others if I end up recruiting) can also interject posts to describe a scene or situation.

The game is played by reading previous posts in the story and adding your own parts to the story. It is up-to-you to decide what happens to your character. Some PbP focus solely on storytelling, others add a bit of randomness with stats and some dice throws.

How we will play City of Crime

City of Crime will mostly focus on asynchonous text development with some occasional 1d6 dice throws to add some twist. We will have stats determining the outcome of situations. Different threads will represent different locations in the city and stories will be able to branch and unravel in parallel.

Some ground rules

Show the Rules {click to expand}
  1. Most important rule: DO NOT CHEAT! That includes looking other player's stats on their character sheets when it is not time.

  2. Only join if you will be able to post at least once every day to help build up the story. Remember, others might be waiting for you.

  3. Respect that English is not everybody's first language and remember that Torn is a big international community.

  4. Write the story and your actions in past tense and 3rd person: “Isurus thought Isurus decided to

  5. Story related threads should only contain In-Character content, meaning description of what your character does.

  6. Never indicate your stats and level in Story posts and Never look up other players stats BEFORE to perform an action. Only look up their stats once you've decided on the action and are ready to check your stats against your target to find out the result.

  7. If an action increases your stats, immediately update your character sheet so that others can use updated stats for their own actions.

  8. For any game related questions, use the dedicated Out-of-Character post [TO BE ADDED].
  9. Your character will have two identifiers:
    1. %CS only used in the character sheet creation post. It will be used to search and found your character post on the forum. The Tag %CS is thus reserved and cannot be used for any chapters/location of the story.
    2. % as in %MS4289165 for % to identify and reference your character in specific chapters/locations of the story (p.s. The hashtag is already reserved for formatting!)

  10. Dice throws will be done with a 6-sided dice. Xd6 means: throw X 6-sided dices. No one will be there to check on you so we expect honesty! You can use a real dice or for instance the Google Dice roller https://share.google/7dAnplCgdqJqC5F4w

  11. Follow the post template below and the style for indicating actions.
  12. Write a minimum of ~100 words. No upper limit, but do not make it too long.
  13. NEVER play/decide for someone else. Indicate what you do towards the other player and let it at that. It is their time to play.
  14. Contact the players you referred to in your post to let them know it is their turn or they should play their action.

How to resolve actions/situations

Actions/situations come in two types: stat-based and dice-based.

All actions and situations in the list below should be indicated in the main text in capital with result in bracket for dice-based actions.

Below is the same situation going two different ways based on a dice roll and two other situation based on stats. What is required for Dice Based situations is described a bit further down.

Dice-based Resolution

“The man standing in front of me was bulging his muscles, ready to fight. Something was telling me that I had gotten myself in quite the predicament. I turned on my heels and tried to ESCAPE [2]. Unfortunately, I tripped on my foot and fell on my face.”

“The man standing in front of me was bulging his muscles, ready to fight. Something was telling me that I had gotten myself in quite the predicament. I tried to ESCAPE [5]. I threw my umbrella at the big man and as he was dealing with the situation, I took off like a cheetah!”

How to resolve Dice Based Situations {click to expand}

All the following situations happen on a X-6 of a 1d6 dice. The range X to 6 controls how easy or difficult it is to accomplish the action. For instance, a 2-6 means you succeed on any of the numbers except 1. A 4-6 range means you succeed only on a 4, 5 or 6.

A 1 is an Epic Fail! Up to you to tell what happens. Most likely will involve some broken bones or you killed the target when you were only trying knock them out temporarily. Be creative.

A 6 is an Epic Win! You succeed better than anticipated.

Dice-related Actions

  • ESCAPE [4-6]: You attempt to escape the situation.
  • GAMBLE [4-6]: You gamble, make a bet in the situation.

Stat-based Resolution

I have decided that I SNEAK on the other player. I wrote my story and reached the action. I go compare my Speed with the other character sheet. My Speed turns out to twice higher (8 > 4). I successfully SNEAK up on the target.

“The large man had not realised yet that I was following him. I decided that will SNEAK up on him. He seemed pretty distracted and busy with his thoughts. Hidden in the shadows, I suddenly sprint towards my target and grab his wallet left in his back pocket.”

As you can see, I did not reveal the stats in the text to keep the element of surprise. Other players might take a chance at it and succeed…or not.

How to resolve Stat-based situations {click to expand}

Resolve the situation, in order:

  1. You have wrote your story up-to the point where you need to check your stats against the target.
  2. You indicated in my text that I was taking the SNEAK action by marking it in all caps.
  3. You can now check the result by comparing your stats with the target. The result depends on the difference in stats, see table hereafter.
  4. Resume the situation narrating what happened without revealing the stats.

To calculate if you succeed, substract the target stats from your own stats. Result = YOUR_STAT - ENEMY_STAT

Stat Difference What happens
< -4 Epic Fail! You shouldn't have tried! Something terrible happens!
-4 to -2 Your stats are lower than the target. You fail. Something bad happens.
-1 to +1 Stats are equal. It fails, but nothing dramatic happens.
+2 to +4 You succeed! Nothing incredible, but you're in the clear!
+5 to +8 You did really good! Something great happens!
> +8 You are much stronger than your target. They look insignificant to you and you prefer to ignore them.

Stat-related Actions

As you will see in the Character Creation post, you will have access to 4 stats: Speed, Aim, Muscle, Intelligence.

Some actions require to check one stat against another type, for instance [A/S] checks your Aim against the Speed of the target.

  • SNEAK [S]: you sneak up on the target ready to do X
  • SHOOT/THROW [A/S]: You check you Aim against the Speed of the target when you want to shoot a gun or throw something at the target.
  • HIT [A/S]: You try to hit your target with X.
  • HURT [M]: You hit the target and hope to deal damage.
  • BLUFF [I]: You try to outsmart your target.

Post Template

  1. Start with your Location tag and Character Name.
  2. Resume the story.
  3. Add your Character Sheet post link highlighted by “- - -” dashes before and after.

The streets were unusually dark for a month of May, even for the East Side of the city. Something in the air told you that something was off, but the call you received was very clear: “Head to East Side and retrieve the package we left by Bits ‘n’ Bob’s”. You knew the place quite well, as they had often supplied you with all you could possibly need to renovate your house, from wheelbarrows to bricks. On top of that, Bob, the owner, would occasionally throw a beer to his best customers. You were a regular and often ended the day with a beer at Bits ‘n’ Bob’s, but not today. Today, the Boss had put you in charge of retrieving that secret package you were strictly instructed not to open. The plan was very clear: this package would turn the tide in the war between your gang and your rivals trying to take control of the area. You were determined to make that happen. Your gang had to win. There was no other way.

As you were about to turn onto Eagle Street, a pungent smell of blood and gunpowder filled the air. Were you too late? Had someone gotten there before you? The street was dead silent. As you peeked over the corner of the street, you could see that a few lampposts had gone dark. They had been silenced forever. From this distance, it was almost impossible to tell whether someone was waiting for you by Bits ‘n’ Bob, but you still had to go and collect this package, if it was still there.

I'm trying to find new activities to do during flights.

I'm thinking that a whole system around horse races or other illegal races or fights:

  • players could buy animals (horse, dog, rooster),
  • Players could train them to increase their stats
  • Players could have them race/fight against one another and the result is determined by stats
  • Players could place bets on their favourite animal
  • Player could read information in the newspaper to try to find out the stats or have some better idea of who to bet on

Ideally something we could do during flying

I think it would be hilarious if we could create custom companies, other than the existing categories.

It would probably be enough to use existing companies as templates and be able to change the name of the different jobs.

API foreign stock historical data? ·

I know that for Torn, but wondering if some of the third-party tools like YATA who do collect data from users flying to those destination store the data long-term and if it's accessible.

API foreign stock historical data? ·

Hello,

I haven't found historical data for foreign stocks.

Only current most recent stock through YATA API.

Torn PDA shows time series so I'm assuming the data is stored somewhere.

I've been running a cronjob to fetch YATA's data frequently, but it's unpractical over long periods of time, unless one has accessed to a server.

Where can I get historical data for some modelling project?

My Anecdote:

"One of my biggest fears as a small smuggler barely turning any profit is getting stranded in a foreign country. You land there after a long and exhausting trip. You wander the streets in search of your next deal and BOOM, in a moment of distraction, someone jumps you and leaves you bleeding in the streets. If that hasn't happen to you yet, no worries, it will come.

This has happened to me in Argentina. I was heading to Buenos Aires to fetch those famous counterfeit monkey plushies of that cute Japanese macaque Punch. Little did I know my trip would get extended by nearly half a day! It was getting pretty late at night when I finally managed to get my hands on a luggage full of plushies. I was on my way back to the airport when someone attack me from the back, stole my wallet and left me unconscious in the streets. It took a few hours for someone to find me. I woke up in the hospital a few hours too late with hours of waiting time to get treated. My flight back home was long gone. I had to spend the night in the hospital and take a flight in the morning".

Isurus had just gone back from Mexico. He had been cut off network for the duration of the trip, stuck in some desert to retrieve merchandise for the underboss. The scribbles he received in a text were unclear, but supposed he had to urgently fly back to Torn City and head to East Side. The underboss had instructed him to retrieve a package and here he was, in dark dirty East Side for some obscure mission. Oh god, he hated those transportation  mission where the content was left 'unknown'. Last time they had him transport a container of uranium on bike! On a freaking bike! Of course, he did not know at the time and was left in the dark over the plan to build a dirty bomb. If at least they had paid him well. Nope, barely enough to afford some xanax. He hoped this was not one of those missions. A quick in-and-out and he would be done.

The package was supposedly in the trash bin in the alley to the right of Bits 'n' Bobs. *Maybe he could have time for a beer afterwards*, he thought. Bob always had beers in the fridge, and even when Isurus had to clear his bar tab, Bob’s beers were always pretty cheap—cheap enough to make a hefty profit at the Market on North Side. He had forgotten how deep that bin was. And smelly! Probably some old mouldy pizza in there, thrown by the Pizza Huts on the other side of the street. He could not believe some people would make bucks selling mouldy pizza! Whatever helped, he guessed! Hopefully he would not have to dive in there. The door of the bin was locked. Fortunately, he had brought a crowbar to pry anything open. Unfortunately, he would have to forget about being discrete. He would spend the next ten minutes trying to come up with the best course of action.

Carcharias was no impressive gang, but they had numbers and could run extensive operations when times come. Because of his knowledge of Spanish, the underboss would often arrange to send him to Mexico with the team and organize transatlantic trades between their local operations and the European branch.

Show the Rules {click to expand}

How to resolve Dice Based Situations {click to expand}

How to resolve Stat-based situations {click to expand}
