"Torn is actively supporting the relief efforts and Ukraine's military on behalf of all of our players by contributing over $200,000 to worthy causes so far." ^ From Ched's announcement, emphasis mine
Suppose a hypothetical scenario where Ched had donated to the Russian military instead, similarly citing that he had done this "on behalf of (the) playerbase", how many players would still be as enthused about advocating that the torn staff can do whatever they want with the money?
I think the crux of the problem isn't how Ched or the torn staff are spending their money, but that they are doing so in the name of "all of (the) players", without realising that many players do not consent to being represented this way in this transaction. (I'm quoting Ched's announcement.)
Sure, we have donated to Torn to help the community and the game thrive, and in doing so we are well aware that the money will be profited by the developers as a means to support their efforts. But it will be quite the leap to assume that we would still be happy to do so when the money is being channeled for political means. Many of us play torn casually, and enjoy it being an apolitical platform where we don't have to think about how the money is being used, especially for causes we don't believe in. By explicitly articulating that Torn's "playerbase" is supporting (any) military effort, we are inadvertently forced to pick a side even if we may not be comfortable in doing so. The above hypothetical is meant to highlight this conundrum that many commentators have implicitly highlighted - we don't agree for the donation to be done in our names, as we simply don't believe in the cause, be it because we are pacifists, non-interventionists, people who haven't researched on the issue enough, or even pro-Russian etc. Again, if Ched is doing so out of his own pocket, power to him. But he had explicitly linked the donation to the playerbase, so of course we as the "playerbase" have reason to voice our concerns.
I also get where you are coming from by saying that we can cease our donations to Torn if we don't support this effort. Two responses to this. First, it's important for any businesses (or any community for that matter) to have a platform for feedback. This is why there is a forum for us, partly to raise concerns about the service/product we are paying for. From a business perspective, it would only be fair to the Torn staff to realise why there might be a sudden drop in donations from the community, and to make an informed decision about this relatively political decision they are making. As it stands, it isn't clear whether there is a big enough pool of players willing to stand against Torn's decision and vote with their wallets, but telling commentators to not kick up a fuss and simply stop contributing isn't going to help the platform. Second, the donation seems to already have been paid in the name of torn players. Telling us to not continue supporting Torn doesn't change the fact that we have already been misrepresented, which from what I can tell, is the cause of quite a bit of the dissent.
If we believe in the cause, we can donate to it in our own names. If Ched believes in the cause, he can donate in his name. But lumping the two together isn't the solution unless we are sure that there is a near consensus support for the cause. And as far as I can tell from this thread, this seems to be a pretty divisive issue that deserves to be discussed.
You've only busted 3 ppl (with a success rate of 23%) in your entire torn life. Like what Omanpx said above, you might wanna try busting a little more first before concluding that it's too easy.
If anything, I think most people would agree that the busting merits are some of the toughest to get, with only 500 people in all of torn achieving the 10k one. Afaik, most people can only bust 5-8 times a day due to the cool down.
The fact that jail pages are emptier than usual now is more likely due to the state of crime 2.0 at this point. I believe many of the current higher-nerve crimes like scamming and cracking don't have jails for their crit failures?
Once again thanks to the organizers for this event, it's been a blast! And my sleep cycle thanks you guys for the shorter version for this run :)
Congrats to all the winners, and a huge shout out Neliex (LSD) and Simik13l (racing) for the great competition in our respective categories; turned out to be excruciatingly close in the end! Also quite happy with where I ended up in the busting category amidst busting legends and book users haha.
