Football is BACK! 

 

With that i am looking to get a game wide football competition within Torn. One of my favorite yearly football competitions is the Pigskin Pickem that ESPN does. It is a super easy one for everyone to do. Last year i teased the idea in the Torn Underground server and got some positive feedback so i think its time to give it a shot live. 

 

So here is the deal, i have set up the first Pre-Season week 1 form to fill out and enter. Since this will be a learning curve for me, we will not start the actual competition until the regular season, but this will allow me to make sure the form and responses come through correctly. All you have to do is include your torn ID and pick a winner for each game. Then following the Monday night games each week i will post the winners along with the next weeks form. 

 

For Pre-season: If we get some good interest in this, i will run it for all the pre season weeks, and there will be NO Entry fee, however i will randomly select some people who submit to win some small prizes as a thank you for giving it a shot. I will also be leaving the form open to submit the entire weekend as i know the first games start in approximately 7 hours just so people can still be entered to win the random prizes. 

 

NFL PRE-SEASON WEEK 1 ENTRY

 

 

 

Once the regular season commences this will be the rules:

  • There will be a 10M buy in each week
  • Forms must be submitted before the first game of the week (including if there is a Thursday game)
  • The 10M entry fee must also be submitted before the first game of the week
  • Submit the form and ensure your ID is correct and choose a winner for each week
  • The winner of the week will receive 90% of the weeks pull in entry fees
    • The extra 10% will go to overall winners for the entire season 
  • Any forms submitted without receiving payment before the first game starts will be voided! 

 

 

There are two ways to stay up to date with this event

  • First you can keep checking here in this Forum and i will try and keep everything updated with winners and the weekly entries
  • Second you can join the Torn Underground Discord Server . Add the football role in the #roles channel which will open a separate channel for all people playing to keep up to date along with some trash talking!

In Shorting stocks (make money when stocks go down)

This suggestion has come up about every six months for the last 10 years. Shorting stocks is more complicated then it seems. Technically, you would need to borrow the shares from another investor and pay them interest. Skip that step? Who pays the dividend? Should Ched pay it twice? When you start to pull the threads, it gets a lot more complicated than "I want to bet it goes down". What happens when someone shorts something them logs out for a long period of time? Stocks irl can go to zero (that doesn't happen in Torn), but for shorted stocks, the loss is potentially unlimited.

In the end, shorting has several nuances and, this is a general statement, but the players of Torn are not all that smart. They just won't understand it.

No, you can buy an infinite dollar amount of any stock.

or there is a cap and nobody is rich enough to reach it, there have easily been 5T, maybe even 10T investments I would bet.

In Stock Market Trading - My Tips

I appreciate this post, most new players will not try to share tips since they are new. So thanks for that.

Would be nice if you showed us your stock net profits since you started. It doesn't show unrealized profit/loss, but it gives a general idea of how it goes.

This is my personal statistics page for stocks... I don't have a tactic, I usually just buy stock for the passive perks and increment rewards, and sell when I want something else.

In Stock Market - Volatility Update

The current stock market works well for players with sub-50b net worth as they can simply buy the benefit blocks and sit on them. The nerf was very impactful for the >50b crowd though. Of course, no one is going to shed a tear for the "rich" people who have lost one of the last interesting things to do in the game.

However, when you look a bit deeper, Ched's nerf of the stock market is not without consequences. To understand this, lets back up to the main purpose of the stock market - to tie up player's money. Players were enticed to sink their money into the stock market in return for benefits and potential price appreciation. This arrangement kept excess cash from floating around the economy causing inflation and other problematic effects.

Now that players have come to the realization that even smart trading is likely to only earn 20-25% per year, they are asking themselves "where can I get a higher return with less risk?" Players have, and will, likely move to these revenue sources:
  • Creating, buying, and renting private islands in droves, thus driving down rental prices and unbalancing the rental market.
  • Creating more companies, leading to worker shortages, lower individual company income, and massive inflation (the company system pumps more money into the game than any other input - more companies, more money creation).
  • Buying up items. Players have already noticed how higher end weapons have become out of reach for most players. Players likely will start hoarding items as they may appreciate, thus driving up item prices (aka inflation).
  • Creating more cache farms to replace "lost" income, which weakens the faction system, and results in more negotiated ranked wars.
I'm sure there are other unbalancing effects too. The point is, the money is going to go somewhere if it is not enticed to stay in the stock market. It sure feels like the changes in player behavior that this nerf has caused, and will continue to cause (at probably an accelerated pace), were not properly considered. I would also note that much of alternative uses for cash don't involve risk. You are supposed to get paid for risk, no?

In Stock Market - Volatility Update

Lets not go overboard.. crimes 2.0 has been in the works for a decade, it's not been suddenly whipped up to distract everyone from the money they're losing in stocks.

They're also still very much at the noob end of releasing crimes. The old ones didn't give any more rewards than the new ones. Be patient.
