How do you change your name in Torn, and how long must an account be inactive before its name can be taken?

Per the Torn Wiki (2025), a name is changed in Preferences. To take an inactive player's name, the owner must have been inactive for 75 days + 25 days per level of theirs, which is 100 to 1,325 days depending on level.

How to change your name

• The Torn Wiki (2025) says the name is changed in Preferences.
• The login name cannot be changed.
• After a change, another change is blocked for 3 months.

Name rules

• A new name can be at most 15 characters.
• Only letters, numbers, dashes or underscores are allowed.
• The wiki says discriminating names are deleted on sight.

Taking an inactive player's name

Inactivity required: 75 + (25 × owner's level) days, a range of 100 to 1,325 days per the wiki. Example only: a level 10 owner gives 325 days^[1].

Cost: 200 + (50 × owner's level) points, a range of 250 to 2,700 points per the wiki. Example only: a level 10 owner gives 700 points^[1].

• The owner must not be a donator or subscriber.
• The owner must be under level 50.
• The owner must not be Fallen or Resting in Peace.
• Fewer than 5 weekly active people may have the owner on their friends or enemies lists.

2021 patch changes

• Patch list 19/01/21: new players can change their name once, to an available one, for free within their first 14 days.
• Patch list 09/03/21: changing only the case of the current name is free and unlimited.
