How does marriage work in Torn and does it give any real benefits?

You buy a ring, propose from your items, and if the player accepts you are engaged. You then marry at the Church with at least one witness.^[1][2] The documented benefits are property sharing, optional vault sharing and marriage awards.^[3][4][5]

How it works

1. Get a ring and use it from your items to propose to an unmarried player. They receive an event and can accept or reject.^[1][2]
2. On acceptance both players become Engaged.^[2]
3. You marry at the Church after selecting at least one player as a witness. The marriage completes once the witness accepts.^[1] A 2020 wiki capture also says both spouses and the witness must be in Torn for the ceremony.^[6]
4. The 'Newlywed' status lasts 30 days.^[1]

• Cancelling a proposal: a 2020 wiki capture says go to the Church and click "View Proposals"^[2]. The 2020 FAQ says you can cancel in your player preferences before the proposal is accepted or declined^[7]. The sources differ and no current page settles which applies.
• Cancelling an engagement: Church > Ceremony > Second Thoughts (2020 capture).^[2]
• The ring stays with the proposer.^[8]
• Divorce: no source describes the divorce procedure itself. Staff said in January 2025 that if a divorce fails with an error, you must kick the spouse out of your property first; the error messages were not being displayed, which was reported as a bug.^[9]

Benefits

• Property sharing: a 2013 wiki capture (an older capture, possibly out of date) says either spouse may move into a property owned by the other, and the owner can kick the spouse out.^[3]
• Vault sharing: owners can share their vault with a spouse. It is disabled by default, and you can revoke permission at any time.^[4][10]
• Honors (2020 capture): Fascination (250 days), Chasm (750 days) and Stairway To Heaven (1,500 days) for staying married to the same person. Deadly Duo is for defeating someone with your spouse, and Lovestruck for defeating a married couple.^[11]
• Medals (2026 capture): Commitment medals run from Silver Anniversary at 50 consecutive days to Triple Platinum Anniversary at 2,000 consecutive days.^[5] The honor thresholds are from 2020 and may have changed since.^[11]

Is it worth it?

The documented benefits are property sharing, optional vault sharing and awards. Views on their value come from 2017–2020 threads plus the wiki's neutral wording. The wiki says players marry for their own reasons, such as a better house, merits or companionship.^[12] A 2017 suggestion thread described marriage as only for merits and property sharing.^[13] One 2019 player complained that the property owner pays upgrades and upkeep while the spouse shares the benefit.^[14] Players also report marriages ending through inactivity.^[15]

The sources give no ring cost, divorce cost or cooldown, and no numeric value for the merit rewards.

• The 2013 wiki capture says spouses cannot access vaults on each other's properties^[3]; the 2025 wiki says owners can share their vault with a spouse, off by default^[4].
• A 2020 wiki capture says a pending proposal is cancelled via Church > View Proposals^[2]; the 2020 FAQ says in player preferences^[7].
