Marriage
What TornLife's research has established about Marriage, and the questions players asked about it.
What TornLife has verified
- Players reported drawbacks: a property owner pays upgrades and upkeep while the spouse shares the benefit, and marriages end through inactivity, scamming or money disputes. Some inactive players stay married to collect merits. (player reports; Torn marriages Heaven or Hell???, )
- The Torn Wiki says players marry at the Church. You need a ring, use it from your items to propose to an unmarried player, and if they accept you are engaged. You then marry at the church after selecting at least one player as a witness. The 'Newlywed' status lasts 30 days. (documented; Church › Church / Marriage, )
- Staff said that when divorce fails with an error, the player must kick the spouse out of their property. The error messages were not being displayed, and this was reported as a bug. (confirmed by Torn; Can't divorce spouse, )
- The Torn Wiki (2020 capture) lists marriage-related honors: Fascination for staying married to the same person 250 days, Chasm for 750 days, Stairway To Heaven for 1,500 days. Deadly Duo is for defeating someone with your spouse, and Lovestruck for defeating a married couple. (documented; Marriage › Related Awards, )
- A 2020 wiki capture says both intended spouses and the witness must be in Torn for the ceremony, and that a ring and a witness are required. (documented; Marriage › The Basics, )
- Proposal: use the ring from inventory and enter the intended spouse's name. The target gets an event and can Accept or Reject. On acceptance both become 'Engaged'. A pending proposal can be cancelled via Church > View Proposals. An accepted engagement can be cancelled via Church > Ceremony > Second Thoughts. (documented; FAQ › FAQ › Marriage › How do I propose/marry someone?, )
- Staff said the wedding ring does not change hands; it stays with the person who proposed. Staff noted a change could cause problems if the proposer disposed of the item before the engagement went through. (confirmed by Torn; I cant find my wedding ring in the Items, )
- The wiki says players use marriage for their own reasons, such as a better house, merits or companionship. (documented; Down To Details › Marriage, )
- The wiki's Commitment medals (2026 capture) reward the same spouse for consecutive days. They start with Silver Anniversary at 50 days, then step up every 50 days (Ruby 100, Sapphire 150, Emerald 200, Gold 250, and so on) to Triple Platinum Anniversary at 2,000 consecutive days. (documented; Award › Medals › Commitment — table, )
- The medal steps are not evenly spaced later on. Triple Gold is 1,000 days, Triple Diamond is 1,500 days and Triple Platinum is 2,000 days, after 50-day steps up to Triple Emerald at 900 days. (documented; Award › Medals › Commitment — table, )
