How does the stock market work in Torn, and how do players make money from buying and selling stocks?
Torn's stock market (Stocks 3.0, released 06/04/21) lets a player with a Stock Ticker buy and sell shares instantly at the current price, with no buying tax and a 0.1% sales fee[1][2][3]. Players profit from price rises, cash dividends or benefit blocks, but prices are hard to predict and losses happen[4].
How the exchange works
- Access needs a Stock Ticker, bought for 50 Points at the Points Building.[1][5]
- The wiki says the market is reached from the north side of the city, or while flying with a laptop. Each stock shows price, 24-hour change and a graph. Stock profiles show benefits, shares required, forecast, demand and shares for sale. The buy form takes shares or a dollar amount.
- Buying and selling is instantaneous, with no limit on shares bought, sold or owned. If prices are updating, a purchase may take about 10 seconds before the order must be confirmed again at the new price.[2]
- Buying carries no tax. Selling costs 0.1% of the total value sold. The fee was waived from 06/04/21 to 20/04/21.[2][3]
- Stocks cannot be traded between players, and cannot be bought or sold in hospital, in jail or while traveling.[2]
- Purchases can be merged into one position, which averages the data. Since 22/06/2021, sells remove shares from the newest transaction first.[2][3]
Price movement
Stock prices are expected to rise by an average of 10% per year, but there are no guarantees.[4] A 2021 player guide says prices are based on real-world stocks, but players only theorise about how; the idea that in-game buying or selling moves prices is unverified.
Ways to profit
Price swings: buy low, sell high. A 2021 player guide says instant trades make day trading on minute-by-minute swings possible, and that predicting direction is the hard part. This is a player report, not a documented method.
Cash dividends: TCC (350,000 shares), IOU (3,000,000), TSBC (4,000,000) and GRN (500,000) pay random cash dividends at approximately 20% APR. That figure is the wiki's estimate, not a guarantee.[6][7]
Benefit blocks: benefits depend on the number of shares owned, and a block is active as soon as it is bought.[6] Examples: 1.5 million TCB shares raise bank interest by 10%.[7] FHG needs 2,000,000 shares per block and pays a Feathery Hotel Coupon about four times a month on average, and each extra increment costs double the previous one.[6][7] Mc Smoogle pays energy by dividend increment, capped at 10 increments (1,000 energy) since 04/10/22.[3]
Selling shares that would interrupt a benefit or dividend cycle triggers a red warning, added 27/04/21.[3] Awards such as Dividend, Monopoly (every stock benefit at once), Bullish and Bearish track results.[8]
Risk and history
Forum officers in earlier years described the market as mimicking real stocks and hard to predict. Players said people do lose money but rarely say so, and few catch tops and bottoms. These are opinions.
Before Stocks 3.0, the market was player-driven with a bot, and one officer in 2019 called it ponzi-like. That system is superseded by instant trading at the current price.
TornLife's sources are thin on 2024-2026 strategy and crashes, and lack a full current list of blocks with share requirements.
- Current
- Stocks 3.0 offers instant trades at the current price, with a 0.1% sales fee and no purchase tax.
- Historical
- Before April 2021 the market was player-driven with a bot, and officers described it as ponzi-like.
- Change
- Stocks 3.0 was released 06/04/21; the sales fee began 20/04/21 and red benefit-cycle warnings were added 27/04/21.
