Account settings
What TornLife's research has established about Account settings, and the questions players asked about it.
What TornLife has verified
- A player's referral link is simply their own user ID appended after www.torn.com/ (e.g. http://www.torn.com/123456789); no separate generation step or button is needed beyond navigating to the referral page to view/copy it. (documented; FAQ › FAQ › Other › What is my referral link? / I can't find the Question and/o…, )
- Deletion/closure has no effect on other players: the account can still be interacted with as normal (e.g. attacked), as if the owner had simply gone inactive, meaning items, money and other account state are not wiped by the deletion process itself. (documented; Account Closure, )
- Players initiate account deletion themselves via the Account Closure/Account Closer system on their Preferences page: first the account is 'closed' (instant, blocks all access to Torn), and after a 14-day wait the player can return to complete 'deletion'. (documented; Account Closure, )
- For an old account the owner can no longer log into, staff (2026) said the owner can email webmaster@torn.com from the email address registered to that account to request it be stripped of details, though staff do not act on such requests by placing the account in federal jail. (confirmed by Torn; Need Help Deleting my Old Account, )
- Transferring items or money from an account being deleted to a new account (directly or via a friend) is prohibited and results in a federal jail sentence plus items being stripped and purged from the game; a restarted account must begin brand-new, 1 day old, with no referral. (documented; NewAccount › Delete or Restart an account, )
- Whether a deleted account's name becomes available depends on scenario: if an account is completely deleted from the game, the name may become available in future; if the player is merely inactive, or in federal jail, the name is not released. Staff noted some names can also be bought back with a premium number of points, though the exact logic was uncertain even to staff. (confirmed by Torn; Does torn ever purge names?, )
- 'Deleting' an account does not actually delete it; it sanitizes the account of personal information (email address, encrypted password, IP addresses, profile details, profile and forum signatures, bazaar description, all security panel details). Without an email or password the user can no longer log in. (documented; Account Closure, )
- The 14-day wait after closing an account can be cancelled at any point during that period; after the wait, deletion can be initiated. (documented; NewAccount › Delete or Restart an account, )
- Once deletion is completed, a recovery key is the only way to restore the account; only the owner has this key, staff cannot restore it, and if the key is lost the account is gone for good, with no exceptions. (documented; NewAccount › Delete or Restart an account, )
- A player may only have one non-deleted account at any one time; to restart with a new account, the original must be fully completed through the deletion process first. (documented; Account Closure, )
- The referral link is accessed via the "special" section of the sidebar in Torn; clicking through to that page also displays all rewards available for referring friends. (documented; FAQ › FAQ › Other › What is my referral link? / I can't find the Question and/o…, )
