Body part targeting
What TornLife's research has established about Body part targeting, and the questions players asked about it.
What TornLife has verified
- Riot, Assault, Dune and EOD armour bonuses apply only when the specific area covered by that piece is hit. Delta, Marauder, Sentinel and Vanguard bonuses apply regardless of where the hit lands. (documented; Armor — Advanced Armor Bonuses, )
- Since Attacking 2.1, clothing can be worn over or under armour, and armour only has an effect if the hit visibly hits the armour on the model. The lifebar visualises armour mitigation. (confirmed by Torn; Attacking 2.1 released : 19/12/17 — changes to Attack (2017-12-19), )
- The wiki says armour mitigation is based on displayed pixel coverage on the player model: if a part looks covered it is covered, otherwise there is no protection. Overlapping armour uses the highest value, not the sum. (documented; Armor — Coverage, )
- Critical hit chance starts at 12%. Modifiers: +3% from Education BIO2410: Anatomy, +0.5% per Critical Hit Rate merit (total +5%), +2-5% from Laser weapon mods, +7% to 21% from a weapon with Expose, and +25% for players with Sylo Tooth. Throat damage rises 10% with BIO2380: Fundamentals of Neurobiology. (documented; Attack › The Player Model, )
- The wiki (2021 capture) says there are 14 body parts that can be hit when attacking a player, three of which (head, throat, heart) are critical hits dealing the most damage. (documented; Attack › The Player Model, )
- Attacking 2.1 (19/12/17) changed the targeting system to work with new male and female models, changed damage modifiers and hit chances for some body parts, and made armour effective only if the hit visibly lands on it. (confirmed by Torn; Attacking 2.1 released : 19/12/17 — changes to Attack (2017-12-19), )
- The wiki lists per-body-part coverage percentages for body armours across Throat, Heart, Chest, Stomach, Arms, Hands, Groin and Legs. For example EOD Apron covers 100% of throat, heart, chest, stomach, arms and groin, 16.88% of hands and 17.58% of legs. Leather Vest covers 0% of throat and 6.50% of arms. (documented; Armor — Body Armors, )
- Helmet coverage for head and throat varies. EOD Helmet covers 100% head and 42.9% throat. M'aol Visage covers 100% of both. Riot Helmet covers 99.61% head and 0% throat. Vanguard Respirator covers 39.6% head. A Hazmat Suit covers 70% of the head and 100% of the rest of the body. (documented; Armor — Helmets, )
- Later Attack patches were interface changes with no change to targeting: masks on armour and clothing to prevent clipping (2018-02), buttons moved to the right side over the opponent on desktop (2018-06), touchscreen model viewing (2019-05) and hit and damage counters on touchscreen (2020-04). (confirmed by Torn; Patch list #138 : 21/04/20 — changes to Attack (2020-04-21), )
- The Attacking 2.1 patch list entry of 2017-12-19 lists more changes than the earlier findings covered: the targeting system was changed to work with the new models, and chances to hit some body parts were changed for balance. It also added a vertical stealth bar showing stealth level and chance during an attack, and a visible opponent model on mobile and tablet views. (confirmed by Torn; Attacking 2.1 released : 19/12/17 — changes to Attack/Patch History (2017-12-19), )
- A hazmat suit worn over armour adds no protection to already-armoured parts. Uncovered parts get its limited protection. (documented; Armor — Miscellaneous Notes, )
