Again, i wasn't under the impression that Torn is strict role play, to the point that you had to treat your membership in a company like you would in real life. In that case, it's 100% my fault that this is ahppening, and i will admit that.

I didn't give notice, therefore it's my fault.

Thank you for the ffedback Dunmugmeh.
Nah [3978]

I got banned once (back in the old days -- I'm over 4k days old now) for putting 50+ bounties in a row on a lower level (making the game unplayable for them). I was reported for harassment. I don't remember which moderator banned me (Fed Jail for 25 days, and appeal ignored). It's funny though because Thuglife did the same to me and got warned..

Now it's suddenly part of the game? Lol..
flufffy [494285]

The records go all the way back to when you started and there's no record of that. Sooo, yeah, I call bs.

OT: Bounties, no matter how many, are not against the rules. Harassment rules in this game relate to bringing real life stuff into the game, eg: steal someones photos and displaying them on your profile, without permission... posting real life information like addresses, phone numbers etc, without permission, or making real life threats. That kind of thing.

Only time bountying is illegal, is if you are bountying a staff member in response/reaction to a staff action taken by that staff member (ex: can't bounty a staff member for forum banning you)

Yeah, the entire system was pretty much never used as designed. It's not self policing nor does it give weaker players a chance to hurt stronger players. Just gives the rich the ability to completely ruin Torn for anyone who isn't rich.

But I don't see them bringing in any restrictions soon. It's been this way for years despite the rampant mis-use.
Hopslam [795412]

Hmm. I think IF bounties ruin Torn anyone, they fall into 1 of 2 categories

1 - they are beyond teenage years, a little older, wiser, have more worldly experience, but are going through a rough patch or dealing with some stuff not so great in RL, so dealing with the 'crap' in a game too is not worth it

2 - they are still a child, teenage or younger, and just don't have enough brain power or life experience to think through the situation and figure out an appropriate plan of reaction

Bounties, under the existing system, don't have a real 'devastating' impact (or shouldn't have) on an established player, not should they to a new player. They may be more of a hindrance to a newer player, than an established player, but there are ways around getting one's game ruined by them.....

Bounties, under the existing system, can be used as an advantage to everyone on the receiving - high level, low level, old player, new player, established player, whatever
AshleyT [1432316]

Unfortunately, speaking from the viewpoint of one of the weaker players, it completely, and totally, ruins the game for anyone without a constant supply of meds.

They are just annoying to the Established, useless. But to a new player, that's it, game over, until the guy leaves you alone. You can't spend more than 5 minutes in Torn without being in hospital, and sometimes that's not enough to do anything worthwhile.

The only time a weaker player can survive, is with help from other, stronger players.
Hopslam [795412]

Hmm. I agree, for me, it's been a very long time since bounties had any negative impact on me. But like, energy bars refill in 5 hours and nerve bars refill in a long time too. Hospital time is usually between 3 hours and 6 hours.

Bounties don't get collected THAT fast ALL the time. It should be fairly easy to work around the timings of bounties.

Plus there is so much valuable information gathering time that can occur while one is in the hospital
Plus there is a lot of trade and even bazaar sales activity that can occur while one is in the hospital

Can you give me some struggles, or specifics, on what one would be doing worthwhile that one cannot do bc of bounties?

AshleyT [1432316]

From my experience, which has dragged on for about a year and a half by now, and is FINALLY letting up.

Complete inability to spend any timeframe longer than 5 mins not travelling or in hospital, crippling effectiveness to faction, and making missions extremely difficult to complete.

Trading is difficult to complete with a bazaar, since getting hit while adding items prevents you confirming the additions. If you longer for more than a minute overseas, you are pretty much guaranteed to be hit, cutting into any money you might have made.

Training is quite difficult to complete if you're doing anything other than just using your standard energy. A single delay due to lag or inattention can send you right back to the hospital screen.

Basically, if you haven't got money for meds, or some help from a stronger player, you're going to have a very hard time, if you can even manage to do anything at all, if you are not a strong, established player yourself.
Hopslam [795412]

thank you for providing some examples

But I still think with a little thinking involved, there are ways to over come every instance where a bounty situation would be "crippling"

I think, a lot of what you mention is Extreme. And a lot of what you mention is a lack of adapting, in order to overcome obstacles.

I agree, there are times when one can get stalked pretty hard. I still to this day, get mug stalked pretty hard every now and then, and I get watched closely for a day or two or three. But even so, no one can stalk someone in a game 24/7. There are times to take care of stuff, training, crimes, etc... and there are times to rest in peace in hospital.

Faction wars - one can make 6 hits to essentially use up their energy bar in under 5 minutes - and in current faction wars, one person will not usually (especially one is getting affected by bounties) after a faction war to great extent. If someone is getting affected by bounties, they are probably lower level/lower stat. Their input on faction wars will be geared to just making a few hits. They won't be needed for the bonus hits or keeping chains alive.

Missions - one mission a day. Yeah, some missions require more energy than others. But even so, there are better times to do mission stuff and better times to sit in hospital.

Trading, with bounties, especially with bazaar is TOTALLY an ADVANTAGE. A 3-4 hours trip to the hospital can be awesome for a bazaar salesman. Sales, without fear of getting mugged. Awesome.

Spending a minute overseas is a bit extreme too. Again, I agree, if you are getting super stalked, yeah it can be tough. I get it too with mug stalkers. But, again, adaptation here is the key. IF you know you are getting stalked like that at a given time, take measures. Time your travel super closely. Set alarms, or whatever. If one is that affected by it, take measures and adapt to overcome. If one is not that affected by it, accept a few bounties and trips to the hospital.

Training should never be affected by bounties. One can train a full energy bar in seconds. A player has a 24 hour med cool down. There is no way one cannot maneuver around bounties and hospital trips enough to get their training in. And again, adaptation here. If money is the issue. Change play style for moment. Join a high pay job. Join a sweet shop job. Or join the job that gives edvds. And get millions per day in items. 4 or 5 days of that, will buy enough meds to last a long while, definitely enough meds to med out and train before another bounty.

I think, ultimately, time in the hospital can be very valuable for many reasons, using time to gather info, using time to figure out next moves, using time in hosp to make any stalkers bored by watching and waiting for you in hosp, on and on. Adaptation and thinking are all one needs to overcome in affects of bounties in the existing system.
AshleyT [1432316]

I have to disagree after so long under it.

Many strong, established players seem to forget, or just do not know how crippling these bounties are.

Try making faction hits with only half a health bar to start with, or less. You can't adapt to that, for example. You will lose.

The problem is, is that bounties are useless if you got a healthy supply of meds, which most who are crippled by bounties do not have. I got lucky and was provided with some, but I've witnessed multiple people quit torn completely due to this.

You say it is extreme. I've gone through it for a long time. All it takes is an avid bounty placer who will literally keep you on 10 bounties every time they log in.

Missions... you can't usually get through them without a hunter interrupting you. A loss of 25 E and a lot of time.

Yes, that hospital time is great, but it means nothing if you can't get through the putting items on your bazaar in the first place, that is, if you even have a bazaar. For most crippled by this, their only option is the item market. Let's not forget most people of this type will not be familiar with the trade system or even have a person they can trade with.

A minute overseas isn't extreme. Extreme is under 10 seconds, which has happened, albeit rarely. I imagine it is worse for weaker players.

As for training, I said that, but if you're doing anything besides just using our bar, that get's really hard to do successfully if you are delayed. Drug taking and the like can give your hunters the precious few seconds they need to score a hit, but if you get hit with lag while doing it...

Admittedly it didn't happen every single time I got out of hosp, but the examples and timings I used are all what have been ordinary in my experience.

It literally does feel like half of the entire city is after you. And setting alarms and such for Torn is in a way an extreme way to play in itself. And the players most badly hit by bounties, aren't going to have the kind of commitment to do that.
Hopslam [795412]

I could respond with a way around to each response here.

I agree, I haven't had the extent that you, or others, have in regard to bounties. But Torn is a long term, quote "never ending" quote game. Some things will take some time to work around and adapt to.

If someone is affected like you mention in the examples by bounties - it comes down to being in 1 of the 2 categories I listed before, one of those - or - just a normal average Torn player who doesn't know enough about game mechanics yet.

[It literally does feel like half of the entire city is after you. And setting alarms and such for Torn is in a way an extreme way to play in itself. And the players most badly hit by bounties, aren't going to have the kind of commitment to do that.]
---- point exactly, if affected by bounties in this manner, they aren't using their brains and thinking of the various ways to overcome obstacles. If the bounties affected their game play enough, they would find ways around any obstacles. Time in the hospital is useful for this kind of stuff.

If you have any specific questions or need to discuss further on ways to adjust and adapt, please send a message or ask for advising when something comes up. I am happy to help.

there is 24 hour med cooldowns
this a long term game with no end in sight
there are strategies and ways to overcome all obstacles that bounties could have on a player of any age, level, rank, stat, etc...

AshleyT [1432316]

And this just shows the coldness of the elites of Torn.

The players most effected by that, will not have the capacity to use the workarounds. Nor the teachings, since most of them involve either extreme commitment, which the players of that level will simply not have, or bending of the systems natural mechanics.

It's not a matter of using brains, it's a matter of experience. And most of them, don't have it, and no one is there to teach them. On top of that, it usually requires resources they just don't have.

Obviously I've adapted and survived, but I suffered hard for it, and if I wasn't so attached to the friends I'd made in Torn, I'd have left. Permanently. No game is worth the severe nature of that. Not even faction wars are so hard on players.
Hopslam [795412]

The workarounds I speak of, are very situational, so I, for example, would look at each situation in itself, and by thought and usage of the brain would be able to figure out a workaround. The teachings and workarounds are for all levels and player types, because they would be fit to a given situation. I could respond to each one of your examples from above with a way to get around or overcome. But, to be honest, I am not trying to prove you wrong or anything, I am trying to show or explain that there are ways to adapt and maneuver around any bounty situation in this game for any player at any stage of play.

Definitely agree that no game is worth playing if the enjoyment isn't there.
AshleyT [1432316]

But these workarounds don't require brainpower, they require experience, knowledge of the game.

While they are some there, most that are the worst effecting cannot, or are unaware, of them.

It only seems obvious to you after thinking, because you know all the tricks. You have to contend with the fact that those worst hit, don't know most, if any, of them. And the methods requiring timing and alarms, are beyond the commitment levels of the typical one hit by these situations.

But yeah, as a counter, I don't think anyone should be capable of removing the enjoyment of the game, while staying within the rules.

It's often a case of those that have the means, don't need them, and those that don't, need them. And many are quick to forget that.
Hopslam [795412]
But these workarounds don't require brainpower, they require experience, knowledge of the game.

*Exactly. It's bc they don't have enough game experience to figure it out right away on their own. Again, hospital time is very valuable
to figure this kind of stuff out. Players trying to figure that stuff out on their own, aren't going to get it right away by themselves. They will get
it, eventually after going through it. You and I or anyone who has figured the ways around, it's because they have gone through it themselves and overcome or have read up/researched/sought advice and seen others overcome it. And why do we know the tricks? Because we have gone through it ourselves, or helped others through it, or observed others get through it.

You have obviously been affected by bounties and have a strong opinion on it. I am not discounting the harshness of what you and others have experienced. [Edit: I got a little long winded below, but essentially, it's not bounties that drive one away, it's more about the type of character or personality one has, or other stuff that's going on in one's real life]

beyond the commitment levels of the typical one hit by these situations.
if commitment levels are low to begin with, bounties surely will affect them more. They won't utilize the hospital time effectively and plan accordingly and adapt effectively. They are probably a casual to very low active player. Alarms and timing things aren't going to be as useful for them, and other adaptations are necessary to help get them through.

I will take one statement of yours from above to review;
The problem is, is that bounties are useless if you got a healthy supply of meds, which most who are crippled by bounties do not have. I got lucky and was provided with some, but I've witnessed multiple people quit torn completely due to this.

Statement-Most who are crippled by bounties do not have a healthy supply of meds.
Problem: lack of meds to get out of hosp, unable to get out of hosp and play as freely as one would like
Questions: where do meds come from? how does one obtain them? how many do I need for a particular period of time? how much is it going to cost? how much time to obtain certain number of meds?
By answering these questions for a certain situation, one can adapt around this problem.
If buying meds straight from the Pharmacy, item market, bazaar market, trade is not an immediate option, what else to consider?
Can adjust company or job that one is in. Can use daily job points from a medical job to obtain meds. Costs nothing as far as $ play money, but does take time to build up a stash.
If one doesn't want to spend weeks building up a med supply, what else to consider?
Can look to join a job with higher pay or job perks that can use job points for items that turn into cash. Grocer, Sweet Shop, Grocery, Adult Novelty all come to mind. Low work stats? go with Grocer or lower star sweet shop.
Not every adaptation will come with a quick fix. If one doesn't have some to hand over meds or items or fulfill every little need, it will likely take some time to build resources. The down time, or time spent building up resources, in all honestly, is often good time to get bounty placers and collectors bored and the problem might just go away before enough resources are obtained.
There could be a whole lot of other factors, but again, I could take any circumstances with these situations and use knowledge to figure out ways to adjust game play to overcome the bounty situation.

Well, how could a new player or inexperienced player know this or figure that stuff out? By going through it themselves and by seeking out answers from others. Yeah, if that player tries to do it all on their own. They will run into a med cool down issue. They will get frustrated. They will feel like the enjoyment of their game has been taken away. 1 - they are beyond teenage years, a little older, wiser, have more worldly experience, but are going through a rough patch or dealing with some stuff not so great in RL, so dealing with the 'crap' in a game too is not worth it. 2 - they are still a child, teenage or younger, and just don't have enough experience to think through the situation and figure out an appropriate plan of reaction on their own.

Hospital time is the answer. But how many effectively use that time to research and look up info to figure out the game mechanics? There are guides and tutorials, there is wiki help, there are staff readily available, there are knowledgeable players around willing to advise, there are probably 15+ existing bounty related forum threads already around with a lot of valuable and relevant info. Side note too, I started this game alone. I had an extremely slow start to the game. Only logged in once a day for the first few months for the most part. I slowly, over time, picked up on stuff, read up on stuff, experienced some hardships.

the overcoming of obstacles is a major reason people stick around. Figuring things out and finding better ways to do things are major reasons people stick around. Those that don't enjoy that part or care for that part, often find this is not the appropriate game for them. And of course, their commitment level would be low, and bounties would affect them more. If one can't overcome obstacles or doesn't want to, why play a game to begin with? just to log in, and train, and do crimes, and build random stats in random categories?

to each their own, each person will play their own way or find their own way, what is fun for one will differ from another, not everyone will login for the same reasons. But if bounties are in one's game, their personality or character will determine how one proceeds and whether they will find ways to overcome or play around them.
