I had them show up in my faction announcement, I removed it by clicking on the A to bring the text editor toolbar down, then went to Tools -> Source Code. I then selected the character and replaced (not just removed) it with a space.
If you don't replace it with a space or character and try to leave it blank, you're gonna have a bad time.
