Fix karma...

No, I'm not here to bitch about up votes, but the shear worthlessness of a down vote. Down voting was a means to counter up voting as it was equal in its own respects...not anymore. We all know that DUDE has way too much karma to show a real number, and that's because it is! Before in bugs & issue I tried to ask staff about this and they apparently didn't know about it, saying that certain forums don't have likes and dislikes count for anything (I tried to find this thread I made, but I can't find it anywhere.)

Later on, This news article was created: https://www.torn.com/news.php?ID=291. Now, given this I am unsure if even staff knew about it...What makes it worse is I am inclined to doubt it to a degree. We all see DUDE threads with more down votes then a thread made by Lisa (he even owns first and second place for most disliked thread.). That being said, his karma shows that this statement of "lower up votes" is a fat load of crap. I have been up voted many times in a row and each vote counts in full, but on the other side of the spectrum I can see several down votes which do very little to me whatsoever.

That being said...Drama seems to get Chedburns attention, so I made a thread :D. Can this be fixed to the down votes actually matter again? Or at the very least the up votes lose their worth as well? I don't even know the math or shit behind but I do know it's bullshit that's for sure.

Only way to fix it is to remove it. But i don't want to lose access to the karma gym.

Krast made a post earlier about "paying" for posting/rating.

I proposed on that thread that Karma be completely redone/reset and used as a way to pay for posting/rating on the threads. I haven't worked out exactly how it would work, but I think it has potential - would give us more of a democracy in the forums and might cut staff a bit of a break - while also making karma actually mean something.

Easily solved. Just run a query selecting all IDs which have access to the gym now, remove Karma, then add access for the ID's collected. And it's done. You and I (and the others) can continue to play around in that amazingly advanced gym and we're finally rid of the whole Karma circus

I don't see the point in removing it and not revamping it when it could potentially be used as a tool to improve the forums if done in the right way.

Ultimately there will never be benefits to karma, the moment it is is the moment it'll be openly abused and ruined. MnC did this when it first came out, it's why karma cannot be gained from faction forums and such. Giving people to abuse content will never be beneficial to the game and is why ched will never give "benefits" for it.

It CURRENTLY does nothing for the game, but it has potential to - therefore not useless.

And pretty much everything has the potential to be abused - especially when first implemented. These issues would have to be worked out as they are discovered just like any other aspect of the game.

Karma isn't new, it has had many changes over the years it's been in the game and is a rebuild on the score system. Things which are abused lead to bans/changes - changing a system to encourage abuse isn't going to happen - Ched spends more time nerfing content, not adding content which could be made open to abuse.

Well, ofc. But I meant that it has potential to do something useful. As much as I enjoy a good unicorn, I don't think turning your energy into a unicorn will benefit the game in any way.

I understand that it isn't new - but if it was redone then it would be a new version and these types of issues would need to be discovered and fixed.

And maybe you're right that he'd never do it, I don't know what he'll do an what he won't. But obviously he's been adding new content or at least working on it - since we have a lot of 2.0's coming *soon. And also since he added the territory wars - which also had issues that were abused and addressed.

I would think that he would need to be constantly adding content to keep people interested in the game, but I could be mistaken.

If there's some kind of mechanic like score / karma or anything else like badges, fancy bars, titles or w/e you can think of there's always gonna be tonnes of people shitposting, therefore any such mechanics are useless in the end. It's just a number and that's what it is.

People who care about the content they post don't care about some number increasing or decreasing, they'll post what they have to say regardless of any system in place.

Put an actual use to karma and you risk losing the quality posters and just increase the amount of shitty attempts at posts just so they could get use out of their karma.

Unless there was a means to limit the power...i.e., make it so you're total hourly up rates/down rates are limited by how ever many full increments of...idk, 100? 100 positive karma + an initial point to rate. Prevents new people and total trolls/shit posters from having a rate in the matter. If a circle jerk starts to happen, it can be reported to staff and looked into (if you rate up every time someone says "Bump", it's clear as ****ing day tbh...).
