Ten days before Hurricane Harvey descended upon Texas on Friday, wreaking havoc and causing widespread flooding, President Donald Trump signed an
executive order revoking a set of regulations that would have made federally funded infrastructure less vulnerable to flooding.
because of Trump's rollback of President Barack Obama's Federal Flood Risk Management Standard, experts across the political spectrum say much of the federal money sent to Texas is likely to be wasted on construction that will insufficiently protect against the next storm.
"the biggest step backwards that has ever been taken in flood-management policy" and said the move would waste taxpayer money, harm the environment, and cost lives.

I mean I know I'm still in business school, but this doesn't seem smart to me. Then again it appears most things, if not all, Trump does is for some personal reason.
L O L
The whole reason why Trump wanted to be president is A: Feed his ego. B: Get tax cuts for the super rich(helping himself. I'll add more when I think of them
The problem with Trump is he really does think he will be good for the USA without recognizing the practicalities.
Very few politicians focused on the grimmer parts of the future ie the climate / pollution / waste (Gordon Brown was one of the few in UK)
Things that really do need to be fixed will not be as it will be too unpopular with the drone like people who are mostly well meaning but also quite dim (that is a lot of people) and those who want their power and wealth to remain intact even if it means the reduction of survival of their descendants (also know as The Man).
Trump i has offered 1 million of his own money to help which is bit of a plaster over a machine gun wound but its better than others.
I cannot wait for you to add more bs about the Great President Donald Trump. God bless the Great President Donald Trump! Amen! Hallelujah! Allahu akbar! Thanks Obama! ^o^
Does this mean the Great President Donald Trump is getting rid of red tape? Deregulation is awesome, cannot wait to see the Great President Donald Trump undo more of Barry Hussein Soetoro's socialistic, communistic, and liberal regulatory crap. God bless the Great President Donald Trump! Amen! Hallelujah! Allahu akbar! Thanks Obama! ^o^
Hey, the meme expert is back! And to answer the question on the meme, the Great President Donald Trump hates NATO and wants to dismantle it and he wants to have great relations with Mother Russia and its protector the Great President Vladimir Putin to make the World Great Again. Thanks Obama! ^o^
sounds like your more anti american then pro trump. it all makes sense now
Why would we need federally funded infrastructure less vulnerable to flooding? That would mean, in every state in the US, all federally funded structures need to be built to standards above the scope of practicality. A huge majority of our non coastal states don't need to build infrastructure with flooding in mind, because it's not a concern. Just like a great majority of our infrastructure doesn't need to be built to withstand earthquakes and tornados, because only certain areas of the US experience them.
Your lambasting the president, for making a practical nove, to save the federal government money, when in all actuality, it's the individual states that need to mandate building codes for their buildings if they feel they need the extra protection. If a landlocked state like kansas or Arizona, who have historically hot/arid climates, decide they need flood protection, let them add that stipulation to their state/local building codes and the federal government will have to follow suit.
And on top of all the practicality behind the move (of that is what's happening), I'm not seeing anywhere in the original link to Trumps executive order, where it plainly states that the federal government's buildings will no longer be built to address the issue of flooding in flood zones, so if someone can find that exact quote for me, and point me to the area of the executive order provided so I can read it for myself, I'd be elated to read the actual text vs. The dramatic OP post about how terrible of a fail donald trump had
https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2017/08/15/presidential-executive-order-establishing-discipline-and-accountabilityi dont really care about the issue, but this is what you were looking for. straight from the white houses website.
its a real boring and semi long read though. all the good stuff that makes trump look good is at the top of course, so dont skip over those parts.
I read the link. What I couldn't find, was where it plainly states that they are no longer building structures the withstand hurricanes and flooding. I skimmed over it to the end, but never saw where it stated that, which is why I want to see the exact wording, as it was lost on me.
And on top of that, I've already made the argument that the move would make sense if it were true. The federal government still has an obligation to meet state and local standards when building. So removing the necessity to have all federal buildings meet a singular national standard for natural disaster prevention, your removing uneccesary expenditure at the federal level, and only building for disaster prevention where necessary, and only for the disasters that are necessary for that region
Follow the little orange man.
Still better than Hillary "ww3" Clinton, there would be a ongoing nuclear war between China and nato & vassals and the floods wouldn't even be newsworthy with billions already dead from nukes.
Want flood protection? Hire the Dutch!
far as i read of the order. hes only talking about federal buildings. we got whole citys to protect
I am not at all sure there could have been any federal regulations that would have made a bit of difference in the case of Harvey, and I agree with another poster who points out that local regulations should take precedence. This was a once a millennium storm, though I guess the argument could be made that these types of storms are becoming more common due to the fact that 7 billion humans are having an impact on the earth, but that won't be provable on a concrete level until long after the current crop of humans is long gone and the history has been written.
At any rate... it would be swell if we humans would stop doing things strictly for the benefit of the immediate, but that is not how humans are wired, and no amount of governmental regulation is going to prevent the outcome of major natural disasters... I mean it would be great if engineering and common sense would conspire to overcome profit seeking... we all know that in hindsight it wasn't a good idea to build a nuclear plant in a known tsunami location, and in hindsight it would have been a good idea not to build major cities along the coast where major storms are likely, but again... humans don't look that far into the future... if we did we would have never invented antibiotics, or proper aseptic techniques, because all those things have done is grown the population and cause the current global climate mess we have... too many rats in the cage now, and the only solution is to eat the young... I guess?
Regulations are great, but common sense is greater in my view... just saying.
It would require the common person to take a look at their own impact and work to reduce it heavily ie not having more than 2 children. Not going on holiday using air travel / cruise liners.Reducing the use of plastic bags / thin plastics that cannot be recycled. And Many such things.
A way to do this would be bringing a modern day equivalent of Captain Planet cartoon to educate to try and kick that mentality into gear.
Recently was told that micro beads are still being used! Across many products "they" decided to make it a big no no by January. So we got micro plastic beads getting into the oceans everyday getting into our guts too and screwing people up and the food chain.
Thats just one thing the descendants will look at our generation and will be thinking why did they not stop doing this / prevent the businesses doing these things. The Answer we would give them "Because the government said it was ok" .
Him rolling back that executive order also saved billions. That extra money being sent to "relief" victims was being borrowed from china and other countries.
Trump actually made a hard but good financial decision. Money doesn't grow on trees.
Plus. A ton of that financial aid that goes to "relief" victims is a joke. I know of people that moved away from NOLA after hurricane Katrina. But they kept their NOLA drivers license so they could go back and claim they still lived there to get their govt relief checks.
The way you make it sound is that it's an easy decision just to give out free money. But things don't work black and white like that.
I agree. I also agree that when a consensus is formed that unnecessary things are harming the environment governments play a necessary role in curbing those things. All I am saying is that in this particular case that the OP has presented, those regulations are best left to the local governments.
Plastic micro beads are not necessary generally speaking. Plastic bags are a fine example of the environmental regulations of the past coming back to bite us in the ass. In the 1970's plastic bags were hailed as environmentally friendly because they reduced the cutting down of trees... trees are a renewable resource, plastic bags are an environmental disaster.
