Basic Torn Advice by Baldr

This is basic Torn advice that everyone needs to know. Many things in Torn are not intuitive, so I'm trying to get you moving in the right direction.

Reaching level 15 is very important. Level 15 allows you to travel, and when you can travel, it becomes much, much easier to make money. Most people reach level 15, and then start running flowers and plushies. You fly to another country, buy flowers or plushies, and fly home. Then you sell those flowers or plushies to another player. There is a very big market, lots of people want to buy them, and you'll get a very nice profit for it. You can easily make $3M a day or more doing this, more if you are very active. Some make $5M-$6M profit a day doing this.

To reach level 15, you need to train your gym stats a bit. Hopefully you've been doing some of that, but you may need to do more. (And long term, even the people who have played for years still use most of their energy to train their stats.)

Once your stats are high enough, there are some targets known as "leveling targets" that you can attack. These are people (inactive now) who have fairly low stats for their level. They are easy to beat in a fight. You attack them, then leave them in the street. That gives you the best experience gains and lets you level up fairly quickly. I have a list of leveling targets in the next msg of this thread.

Once you can easily win against the leveling targets, you should use all or almost all of your e (energy) attacking them and leaving them in the street, until you reach level 15. If you can't beat them easily (ie, if you lose or if you win but take a lot of damage) then you should train more then try again in a few days. Once you reach level 15, level isn't important any more, and you should go back to gym training with your e. Level always helps, but you don't need to actively work on leveling up past level 15, just let it come naturally, and put your energy into training in the gym.

Happiness plays a big part in gym gains, especially when you are small. That's why the shack isn't a good place to live. Low happy means low gym gains. I usually recommend renting a mansion or a ranch until you reach level 15. Don't buy a property, and don't rent long term. 30 to 45 days is about right.

Once you reach level 15, you can easily afford to rent a PI (Private Island) and there are several good reasons to do so. Almost everyone rents a PI when they reach level 15, and some who can afford it start renting one sooner. That's why you don't want to buy a cheaper property and you don't want to rent a mansion or whatever for long term if you can help it. PI's with 3600 happy are usually the sweet spot, where you get the most for your money, and they usually rent for roughly $12M or $13M for 30 days. But for your first PI rental, the cheapest one you can find that has a landing strip may be your best option, and sometimes a 2550 happy PI will have the landing strip. Be sure to double check for that landing strip upgrade on any PI under 3600.

But as a brand new player, you probably can't afford to rent a PI, so often a mansion is the best choice you can afford. At a minimum, rent a penthouse with 925 happy. Don't bother with anything with lower happy than that.  Happy is important.

When you first move into your mansion, your happy won't change. It will gradually go up to the max happy the mansion gives you, but it takes a long time. You can buy lollipops at Sally's Sweet Shop, in City, East Side.) Using lollipops will raise your happy. Use them to reach the max happy for your mansion, then stop. If you've moved into a Private Island, then using lollipops won't get you to the max happy right away. You could consider using an ecstasy, which costs around $70,000. Using one will double your happy.

Your "max" happy isn't really a max. You can go over, even way over, for a short period of time. If you are over your normal max, then Happy resets to that max every 15 minutes. xx:00, xx:15, xx:30, xx:45. Any hour, every 15 minutes, it resets.

You can use lollipops to raise happy above normal, and then use an ecstasy to double your happy. That gets your happy much higher than normal. Then you use the gym train your e and get much bigger gains than normal. On the next 15 minute mark, happy will reset, but you can train the e away first.

Once you can afford it, you can do a much more extreme version of that, called a Happy Jump. Those are expensive and take two days to complete, but they give very large gains. I'll explain those in another post further down.

It's hard to make big money until you are level 15, but you can make smaller amounts of money by going to City, East Side, and shopping at Bits N Bobs or Sweet Shop. Lollipops resell at a high markup. In Bits N Bobs, beer, or any of the basic plushies, will also resell at decent profit. You can buy 100 items a day in the Torn City shops, and reselling those items should make you around 50k to 60k a day in profit. Trading can be profitable, and can be done before level 15, but it takes money to make money, so unless you already have a fair amount of money, it's hard to make much profit. And when you are small and new, you are easy to mug, which makes profitable trading harder. Trading can also be very time consuming, so it may not work for everyone. There is a sub-section of my guide specifically about making money.

You will get mugged. Everyone gets mugged. Learning to protect your money from muggers is important. There isn't a perfect solution to that. Vaults are great, but very, very expensive. Ghost trades work well - but they have a six hour limit. Some people store money in faction vaults, but there is some risk, and you usually don't have immediate access to get your money back. Some buy items or points, and store there money in those, reselling them when they need cash. Most people will probably need to use a combination of several methods to store money, at least until they can afford to buy a Private Island with a vault, and quite likely after that, too. I have a post in my guide about storing money.

When you first reach level 15 you're almost ready to start making good money, and you can stop actively trying to level up. Beyond level 15, levels help some, giving you some merit points at certain spots and extra life for each level. But from here on, you should level up naturally and not spend your energy actively trying to level up. Spend your energy training in the gym. Once you can travel, combat stats are much more important than level.

Rent a Private Island as soon as you are level 15 (if you haven't done it before.) You need a PI with a landing strip and a pilot to travel efficiently. A PI speeds travel by 30%, and allows you to carry an extra +10 items. Those extra items mean more profit on each trip, so the extra profit you can make is more than the cost to rent a PI. The higher happy will also help with your gym training. There are PI's with higher happy, but if you're just getting going, a 3600 happy PI is usually the best deal, the best cost/benefit ratio. Any PI will work, as long as it has a landing strip, and some down to 2550 happy will have them. To rent, visit City, Estate Agent and then click on Rental Market. Once you can afford it, add a large suitcase to carry an additional +3 items, but the PI should come first as it will have a larger impact.

Put your merit points into education time reduction first, until that is maxed. Then into banking interest rates until it's maxed.

For education classes, finish any class you are already doing, but then start working on Sports Science courses, and take all of those. Those are highly recommended as the first place to get a bachelors degree.

If you simply want to read lots of advice on various subjects, the game forums tutorials section has tons of information. This post is a list of various guides/tutorials sorted by category, which may help.

Global Chat: There is a chat area called Global Chat.  I recommend you avoid it.  It is inhabited by trolls, many of which will attack or bounty you for essentially any reason, or even no reason.  If you have questions, better to ask on the forums or message me.  Don't ask in global chat.

Item Market and Bazaars: You can buy almost anything in the item market and bazaars.  Buying from bazaars is almost always a good bit cheaper.  However, Ched no longer lists bazaar prices when you go to the item market.  That makes finding items for sale in bazaars difficult.

There are some player created tools that will allow you to get around this. TornW3B can be found at https://weav3r.dev/ It is a very helpful (both to buyers and sellers.)   Any time you need to buy anything, you should look there.  Bookmark it to make it easy to find.

And Weav3r also has a script you can use so that when you visit the item market, you can easily see the bazaars with the lowest prices (based on the data from his website listed above.)  You'll find that here :

https://www.torn.com/forums.php#/p=threads&f=67&t=16451791&b=0&a=0

I consider use of those tools essential for now.  Hopefully, Ched will realize that this change was a mistake and will revert back to his previous system.

Missions: When you first start, Torn will encourage you do do missions. And the first missions you are given are designed specifically for new players, to help you learn the game. Basic things like buy and equip a weapon, attack a specific (very easy to beat) target, explore the city, and begin doing crimes. It's useful, and helps you get a feel for the game and learn the basics. However, you may want to wait on those missions. Many of them give additional energy when you complete them, and if you hold off on the missions, you can rent a property where you will have better housing, which gives higher happy. And if you train in the gym with higher happy, you get bigger gains. So you may want to wait before accepting the missions, to get a small additional gain from the energy that's given as rewards for these missions. It's entirely your choice, and not a big difference. You can find details on the new player missions here. Once you've completed the new player missions, you will be able to move on to the more "normal" missions. Long term, those let you buy weapon mods and special books, which you can't get any other way. But missions can often use a lot of energy, and shouldn't be considered high priority, especially for newer players. Training is more important. Personally, I tend to do most of the missions I'm given, but there are certain ones that I just skip because I know they tend to waste a lot of energy.

The next few posts in this thread have more advice, on specific subjects.

Good luck.

Leveling List

These are well known targets and lots of other players will also be hitting them. Do not bother to mug, they will have little money if any, and mugging gives less experience. Leaving in the street gives the most.

For best experience gains, you want to beat them and then leave them in the street. Do not mug or hospitalize. Higher level targets give higher experience which helps you level up quicker. How much experience you gain is based entirely on their level and leaving them in the street. Lower stats make them easier to beat, but has no effect on how much experience you gain. Target the higher level ones, as long as you can win.

The people on this list are inactive, well known targets, and were chosen because they have relatively low stats for their level, making them ideal to gain experience and level up.

If you're having trouble winning, train your stats a little more, or consider using pepper spray.

If you are brand new, you should spend some time training in the gym before you attempt to beat these targets.

I have a separate thread with targets who are a little stronger, in the 1k total to 1m total range. This may be useful for people who are already level 15 and growing stronger.

Update : oraN [1778676] has created a tool that will let you use your API key to find which of these are not in the hospital.

This is a *very* useful tool and will save you a lot of time and trouble. Note that it's set up to break the list into several different lists. Baldr's List 1 are the targets in my first target post. Baldr's List 2 are the targets in the post after that. Baldr's List 3 is the next post after that. I broke the list up due to forum post size limits, and Oran decided to continue that to keep from having too many API hits on the server at once. The API key you use only needs to have "Public Only" access, so you don't risk giving out information about your account. And that key isn't stored anywhere except your computer. I strongly suggest you try out the tool.

More targets in the next post. My original list got too big to fit into one post due to limits set by the forums.

Domino Effect Targets : There is an award called Domino Effect, which you receive for beating someone else who already has the award and who is using the honor bar itself. These are fairly easy targets that will give you that award (and merit point.) They are mostly lower level, so give less experience than most of the leveling targets, but you should hit one of them while leveling up just to gain the merit point/award. One is higher level, but also higher stats than I normally list as a leveling target.

Semper Fortis, Manu Forti and Vae Victis Target : These three awards are received when you beat someone with more total stats than you, 2x your stats, and 5x your stats. And three merit points for beating one easy target is a bargain. This target has a fairly high total, so you can get all three awards (and their merit points) for beating him while you have under 550,000 total stats. He's very low level (so has low total life points) and his stats are extremely unbalanced. If he gets lucky enough to hit you, he'll beat you with that one shot, but chances are, you will hit him every round, and he will never hit you. I'd recommend you have at least 500 total stats before you try, but I suspect he can be beaten much earlier than that by people with a fairly balanced build. One player has reported beating him with 120 total, and I've heard from several who beat him with under 200 total.

This is a continuation of the same leveling list above. As I have added new targets, the msg got too big for the forums, so I had to split the list into multiple msgs.

Stuff is happening, and I'm excited about it!

Lots of new leveling targets have been added. I may need room for more, so this is my placeholder. This space could be intentionally left blank, but that's no fun.

How To Store Money

As much as possible, you want to store your money as soon as you get it. Money in your pocket can be mugged, and mugging is quite common in Torn.

There is not a simple answer about how to store money. Most people use a combination of several methods, since none of them are perfect.

Ghost Trades

You send a trade to a friend, someone you trust. Often a faction mate. You label the trade "ghost" so they know what it is for. Then you add money to the trade. Neither one of you accepts the trade, so no money actually changes hands. If you get mugged, the money is stored in the trade, not in your pocket, so the mugger can't get it.

Ghost trades work nearly perfect. You can add more money, or take money out, very quickly, as often as you want. You can even access them while you are in the hospital. They are very, very useful.

But they aren't perfect, because of one big limitation. Trades only last for 6 hours. After 6 hours they "go away", and any money/items that were stored in the trade go back to their original owners. (There may be a 5-10 minute delay before they are returned.) During the day, while you are active, you can use ghost trades to store cash, and every 3 to 5 hours you can cancel the trade and set up a new one, resetting that 6 hour counter. Night time, or any time you are unable to log into Torn for more than 6 hours, is a problem.

Ghost trades can not be set up with inactive players. To start a trade, the other player must have been active in the past 6 hours. And you should not set up ghost trades with people you do not know and trust. They will be able to see how much money is in the trade, and someone who was unscrupulous could cancel the trade (which puts the money back in your pocket) and mug right away. (Or have a friend mug right after the cancel.) Always set these up with friends or faction mates.

You can use me to ghost trade. If you do, please label the trade "ghost". As long as you do that, I do not mind.

Stock Market

Once you own a stock ticker, you can store money in stocks. You purchase a stock ticker in the points building for 50 points. (Effectively a little under $2m based on current point prices.)

You can buy and sell stocks in real time, and stocks can't be mugged. That gets the money out of your pocket. When you sell a stock, there is a fee, which is 0.1% of the selling price. (That is 1/10th of a percent. For a $10m sale, it's a $10,000 fee )

Stock prices will move up and down, so if the price moved up, your profit could be higher than the fee. If the price moved down, you could lose money on the sale, plus have to pay the fee. But it helps avoid the mug risk. Ideally, you want to spend a little time deciding which stock to buy, look at the price history of the stock for the past month or so, and pick a stock that you believe will go up in price.

When you sell, you receive cash in your pocket, so depending on the amount, you may want to spend it right away, or store it in a ghost trade, or fly.

Faction Banks

Most factions will allow their members to store money in the faction vault. You can add money to your account any time you want, but usually to get the money out of the faction, you have to go through faction leadership. Sometimes that means you may have to wait for someone else to be active. There is also at least a small risk. Some factions have had all their money stolen by the faction leader or one of the people who have been given banking rights.

Items / Points

Cash can be mugged, but items can not. So some players will store their money by buying items or points. Points resell quickly if they are priced at/near the low end of current prices. Some items sell slowly, but others sell fast, again, assuming they are priced at/near the low price. Items which are commonly used for cash storage are xanax, donator packs, flowers and plushies. You can also buy items you expect to use yourself. For instance, if you are doing happy jumps, you can stock up on edvds and xanax and ecstasy.

Torn City Bank

When you invest in the Torn City Bank, you have to choose a time period. 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, or 3 months. Once you start that investment, you can't touch that money until the time period is over. You can't take money out, and you can't put more money in, until the investment ends. It's similar to a CD in a real world bank. It pays interest (and if you use merit points to upgrade banking, it can be a fairly good interest rate.) Until you can afford to do a $2B investment, I recommend using short term investments, either one or two weeks at a time. Once you can afford to invest $2B at a time, then I recommend using 2 or 3 month investments. Those give the best rate of return. (Sometimes 2 month investments will have the best rate, and sometimes 3 months, so you have to decide based on the current rate.)

When an investment ends, the money will stay in the bank. It will quit collecting more interest (until you start a new one) but it won't go to your pocket where it can be mugged, either. You have to go to the bank and take it out before it is at risk of being mugged. (Often, you will use it to start a new investment right away.)

Cayman Islands Bank

There is no limit at the Cayman Islands bank. Technically, it pays interest, but the interest rate is very, very low, and I recommend you think of it as no interest at all. It is inconvenient to fly to Cayman Islands every time you want to add money or take money out, and lots of muggers will randomly mug in Cayman's hoping to hit someone who just landed and is there to deposit cash, or someone who just pulled cash out of the bank. It's not a place I really recommend to store money, but it's an option you should know about, and there are lots who use it. Since you have to travel, this option only becomes available once you are level 15.

Piggy Bank

When you are fairly new to Torn, if you do the torn missions, you will have an opportunity to buy a piggy bank. This will be your only chance to get one. If you don't get it with mission points when it is available, you will not get another chance. It is a one-time use item, and is of limited use. You can store as much money as you would like in it, safe from muggers. You can add more money as often as you want. However, the only way to take the money out is to break it open, at which point you get all the cash at once, and the piggy bank is gone. It's of limited use due to the "one time only" nature.

Private Islands with Vaults

Renting property is a much better deal than buying, much cheaper, much more feasible. But you can't use the vault in a rented property. So eventually, when you can afford it, you can buy a Private Island with a vault. Vaults come in various sizes, but most people will want the extra large vault. Those hold a maximum of $1 Billion. You will also spend pretty close to $900m to buy a PI. The vaults are expensive upgrades, and so is the airstrip. If you can't afford the vault and the airstrip, you should keep renting, since both of those upgrades are essential. I also don't recommend buying a PI as soon as you can come up with the money. I'd recommend investing that money in the Torn Bank or in the stock market, so that it can help you make more money. IMO, you should only buy a PI when you can spare that cash without depleting your investment money too bad. New players should not consider this a viable option.

Company Vaults

For older, richer players, company vaults work well. Unlimited storage. Completely safe if you own the SYS stock block (which is expensive.) I use this, in combination with my PI vault, for everything. I do not recommend running a company until you have completed all the business education and can afford the TGP and TCP stocks, and if you plan to store much cash in the company vault, you also need the SYS stock block. New players should not consider this a viable option.

Torn Jobs

Right away, take one of the basic Torn jobs. Grocer is my preferred choice, but army or casino will also work well. These are the basic Torn jobs. Those jobs will let your work stats start rising, which will make it easier to get a job with a player owned company later.

At some point, you will probably want to look for a job in a player owned company. Sweet shop is usually the best place for a new player. Those have low stat requirements. And in a sweet shop, you want the company to have at least a 7* rating. Less than 7 stars doesn't allow you to turn in job points for energy cans, which is the primary benefit of sweet shops. (Those energy cans can be sold for $1.7M to $3.7M each, depending on the type, timing, etc.) Plus, your # of job points gained each day is based on the # of stars, so more is better.

Companies also get a limited number of trains to give out each day based on # of stars. A 3* company gets 3 trains, a 10* company gets 10 trains, etc. So more stars means you'll get trained more often.

I would avoid accepting any job from a company with a low # of stars. At least 7* for sweet shop.

Be willing to work for free, especially in your first job. Some companies pay, some don't, and none pay very much unless you have very high stats. Some even "tax" you, requiring you to pay the company to be there.  Jobs are mostly about the perks of that job, not the money. TV and Oil companies do pay a lot, but have very, very high stat requirements.

When I go looking for a job, I decide what kind of company I want to work for first, then I list all of those companies. Clicking on Newspaper, Job Listing, Sweet Shop, for instance. They will be listed with the 10* companies first, the others later. Look at the company names for those that include "hiring" in the name.

Once you find some that say Hiring, don't just apply. Message the directors first. You can only have one application in at a time, so you're better off if you msg directors from several companies, and only apply after they've told you that they'll hire you.

When you msg them, tell them your work stats. (Manual, Intelligence, Endurance.) And assuming you are active daily, tell them that. Company directors are going to want someone who logs in at least once a day, and they are going to want to know what your stats are, so make sure that info is all in the msg you send.  If you have merit upgrades in Employee Efficiency, tell them that, too.  Though as newer players, you normally will not have them.  Those do help directors a lot and can help you get into better jobs.

Most companies will train their employees in rotation, but you might want to ask about their training policy in your msg just to be sure.  Unless they have exceptionally high pay, I would avoid companies who do not train in rotation.

When you are brand new, you have essentially no work stats. Working the basic Torn jobs will help bring those stats up. And it shouldn't take long before you can find a company job. Those usually have better perks and usually they will train you.

Over time, you'll want to do different jobs. At some point, you will probably want to do the basic Torn jobs for education, medical, and law. Those all give permanent perks when you reach the top level. You keep those perks (lower education time, ability to revive, increased crime success rate) after you leave the jobs. And company jobs have lots of different perks, so you'll probably want to do different ones at different times as your goals change.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

I removed Carrot and Rowdy because they are still active. Carrot is also well over 2,000 total stats, which I used as a cut off. Rowdy may be by now, too.

I see I double-posted the Making Money section. grrrr.

Nice post. A couple of things to add: tissue paper, and Ecstasy use on top of candy use, also might shed light into buying bricks or beer for profit from the city on day 2+ after you have mansion rented and your full happy.

I do cover ecstasy, in the first post and again in the Happy Jump section. I'm not really familiar with tissue paper and why you would use it.

Everyone, This is pure gold! If your new or below level 15 ,I beg you to use these gold nuggets shared here for a proper direction and faster levelling up.

I wish i had met mr baldr on the first day,but i met him pretty late and using his advice i levelled to lvl 15 within a week ( without spending real money). There were days before that where i would only make $5K now i easily make average of 3mil to 4mils thanks to him. Plus his advice has helped me a lot from avoiding muggers and losing money. Man has a bloody big heart and is always available to help. I vote and urged him to run for The United States presidential election of 2020 - But he declined :-(

Pay special attention to leveling info and save the dam levelling list - that is the heart of growth to level up faster then another advice here on this forum

In the mugging part, it pays sometimes and I can recommend mugging anyone working in Medical, especially those inactive player and those who appear in Mission target, my least mug is 80k+ pey day in a single target
Baldr [1847600] Reporter

I'd argue that mugging for 80k is a waste.  People will pay you $250k to $350k to attack them and lose.

Some of these targets, since they've just now been published in the list, may have money on them, but that won't last long.  Once the list is no longer "new", the money that they may have built up will be mugged away, and they'll never go long enough without being mugged for it to build very much.

And mugging gives less experience, so it takes you longer to reach level 15 where you can make good money without using your energy.

The initial jump up to your max happy from renting. It does not use booster cool down, so it'll get you to your max happy faster. If memory serves it's around 20% of your max happy before it don't help. But I was meaning on a standard players choice the best cheap case is using several tissues, max booster cool down with candy, then Ecstasy for the day after renting a property. Personally, I wouldn't do it as I'm doing the SSL route; but the drug user route has the easier options. I'd instead just rent a property the day before the other rental is over. Worst case: I lose 500k-1mil if it's a pi.

Torn Crimes

When I first wrote this guide, this post covered crimes.  However, all of Torn's crimes have been completely rewritten since then.  Torn changes constantly, since the owner/creator (Chedburn, aka Ched) is still active and has a team helping him do updates.

Emforus has created a standalone guide to crimes, and has done a wonderful job, so I'll simply refer you to his guide here.
