There's no actual system in place to automatically cancel such subscriptions - we'd have to actually build that ourselves for both PayPal and Amazon at quite a significant cost (way more than the money we'd get from them), and then keep it operational / maintained into the future.

We could write a script to detect such users and handle them manually, but then we'd need a way to flag them as they'd remain a subscriber until it actually expires - so we'd still need some kind of system built for it.

On second thoughts, it might be possible to check a user's last action when we reprocess a subscription - and prevent it from doing so if they haven't logged in for a certain amount of time. I'm not sure if that's possible as it might just constantly attempt to retry forever, but it's maybe something we can look at in the near future.

If users email us, we're able to easily refund them - that's happened occasionally. We have no intention of keeping anyone's money if they're unhappy (assuming it can be recovered and there's no harm done).

Don't think that could be done in the payment side as they don't have the activity info of the paying party in the subscribed service.

But it could be solved both ways you proposed. One field in the DB to flag inactive users (users that have not logged for more than x amount of time), and comes resubscription time if true, don't.

Also would need to work out putting it at 0 if the user actually logs in the meanwhile.

But in this new world where everything is going subscription based, its a matter of time till this legislated (at least in the EU), guess you would just be ahead of the curve, but sadly torn is a drop in the ocean compared to spotify's, netflix's, etc...

I think it's important to be aware of your own finances. If I review my bank statement a few times a week and see things I know I'm not actively utilizing, I make the effort to cancel that. Torn allows for cancellation like any other game but it needs to be initiated by the user, we have a ridiculous amount of subscribers and can't possibly keep up with the activity levels of every single one. Even if you can't log in, we have the support chat on the log in page where you can get pertinent information from staff in real time.

TL;dr, personal accountability

You do assume the person in question is always physically able to do so.

My issue is more with the cases that is not true.

But regardless, it is always morally arguable to charge someone for a service they are not using.
Ampheromine [2065865]
I do indeed assume that, and I recognize that isn't always the case. I will say it's still worth sending an email to us to describe the situation and we might be able to help in a regard, depending on what the issue has been.

I think intent has a lot to do with this; if we for example knew in certainty a player had passed on, we would certainly take steps to suspend the payment. But we don't know what we don't know, so we have to operate off what we do.

Even if you decided to do it, wouldn't it be better served with an email? We notice you are subbed and haven't played in ____ we'd like you back, or if you don't wish to return you can cancel your sub here... I still don't think you should bother though.

This my understanding of how subscribing works too. One whole year in advance but doesnt it require manual renewal after the year?

And lord knows i wouldnt support canceling early just cause someone didnt log on for 100 days because sometimes they come back. I believe got some subscribers in my own faction that took a three month break. Then their is this other noob i had to rotate out for inactivity but he bought subscriber status then bounced. Hes still in our discord but I haven't been able to talk him into coming back. He just got bored with the game. But he may change his mind before his year is up and if he does i kinda feel that hes entitled to all the benefits he would have paid for... points and prize wise and what not.

No way, people need a little personal responsibility.

If someone has been auto renewing yearly and is 1500 days inactive, that's not your problem.
Maybe they want the monthly rewards still? This should be an action taken by the user, not you (Torn).

It's illegal to use a dead person's credit card, it is considered invalid the moment someone dies. The people who manage your estate would have to notify the credit companies asap so they can close the accounts and prevent any further use.

i could pay for medical cover and never use it

we can never know someones intent, leaving the subscription running might be their choice, cancelling it is a breach of contract no ??

EDIT: usual typos

i think some folk here let the quirks of this game get to them and cloud their reasoning... there's no need to encourage capitalist ruthlessness in the real world, i'm certain ched and torn make much more money off of truly active subs and their regular dp purchases.

it's a brutal world out there. whether there is any legal imperative to cancel inactive subs isn't the question. the question is more towards morality of the situation, and in real world, getting ripped off torn-style is real damage. how many phone companies are demanding thousands from people who're half dead in a hospital bed? "their fault"? maybe? should that be how it is, should businesses seriously incorporate "possibility of a dead hanger-on" into their calculations and carry on, unwavored? is that a good world?

people mention gyms. some of the most widely complained about things about gyms is the near-predatory tactic of pitching multi-year recurring payments around new years, drawing in all the basic suckers and making most of their money off of people who won't make it past january. and while that's totally a legit sounding idea in torn, in the real world i think it makes you a f**king shit business. it makes people oppose gyms and gym memberships. aside from creeps, it's probably the thing that disgusts people most about gyms

torn has a loving userbase. i don't think ched needs to be cheap towards it. i'm glad his reply here is considerably more human than one would ever expect from the example of a gym, or a phone company, or most businesses that deal with subscription-style gimmicks. because folks in this thread are right: he can absolutely tell the bleeding hearts in this thread to eat shit and give him the money. but it's great to not see that.

Just shows how little attention people pay to their money and subscriptions. They can cancel the subscription via card, paypal or amazon, however they are paying.

maybe a method of satisfying those who demand to be charged forever even if incapacitated, jailed, dead, or otherwise removed from internet access, maybe have an "opt-in" option for eternal charges?

moral problems solved, maybe? lol

as i said

-without proof to the contrary i have to lean towards Ched being a fine and ethical businessman.
