So a few days ago I started a thread where I shared with players that I listed an expensive item for my level at a 10th of the price. I omitted a zero. My intention was to list the item somewhat cheaper to get quick liquidity so the red warning did come up but it was not that clear that I omitted a zero as well. Before I could correct my listing it was gone. I asked the guy who bought it to please just help me correct the error. He was a lvl 99 player with a net worth in the billions so he didn't make a massive gain at all. He does one crime and earns so much more. He didn't care much for the game time it took me to get that item. So I took a huge loss. I shared the story on the forums for the kick it would give some people and hoping that maybe someone would just help me get back to where I was. I also stated that that was a real dick move on the other player's part.
People responded very positively and I had to update my post to say wait I've been helped. But some people continued to send me stuff anyways. It wasn't a scam. But some people were no seemingly jealous of the assistance I got.
Later on the discussion turned and I made the point that in a perfect world such errors would not happen and that the system can be improved as to further prevent this from happening and that the developers of Torn do not intend for this to happen. The evidence being the fact that they have a validation in place. Nobody in the world likes wrong input. It irks you when autocorrect gives the wrong word does it not?
So I attempted to explain that in the gameplay of Torn there are limits as to how much damage can be done to a player. There are rules. An input error, especially for a low level player that can't yet travel, can cause unreasonable damage. We all make input errors and there is no need to get punched in the face for it. I asked that players just be considerate and not burn each other for this. There are many other ways to cause hurt.
And people went ape shit at this statement. I was accused of not owning up to my mistake and its another player's right to own you for it and I'm blaming my mistake on the system and they argued that the developers intended for this to be a part of the game. They completely missed the point I was trying to make and some guys only posted to provoke an argument. Eventually I also lost my cool. So for my part I apologize for that.
But my request that people not act like dicks and be considerate in this case was seemingly totally out of line. I'm now being "taught a lesson" by these guys that don't agree. The only lesson I learned was that you can't make a reasonable argument without some players taking huge offense. This is not a fun aspect of Torn and it does take away from the experience of the game. If you disagree with something then fine. No need to be messed up about it.
I don't have much more to say on the matter but it is worth thinking about.
