A few times now we have planned a war or got declared on and peoples books have been wasted cause they have to participate in the chain/war and with ranked warring now i can see this becoming a issue more and more.

So my suggestion is to add a feature where we can pause the book with something like a bookmark this can be a purchasable item or even a subscriber non tradable item

There are not enough thumbs up to express my support.

This would also make using the books more accessible to newer players.

Hmmm, I feel like this could be very strong in some areas. For example the energy books, and how you can pause after an event like Halloween, and save the rest for the next year? I'm just a newbie here, but I don't know, that's what I'm just thinking.

R+. Love the idea of a bookmark of some sorts, but feel this is too OP the way you describe it, so I have a couple of suggestions:
  • Add a maximum period for how long you can bookmark a book for (30 days?).
  • Add a CD period between the use of two bookmarks (something like 60 days?).
  • Add an activation period (like for DBs) before you're able to use a bookmark (24~48h?).
This way the item maintains its usefulness, but at the same time it prevents abuses and highlights its use as a last resource.

Activation period feels a bit dumb for a bookmark, I'd prefer one simple limitation that I feel covers the first 2 points pretty well.

- Can only use 1 bookmark per book

would this be an abuse? > read a book your not ready for (like +5% of a stat) use the bookmark on day 29, when youre ready to receive the full benefits of the book it only takes a day or two to read? or how about using the awareness book for awareness week then saving the other half of the book for awareness week the year after? or using ugly energy for 4 halloweens(1/2 on one halloween, 1/2 on the next, then repeat with the book that lets you repeat the last book you read)?

Edit: Can you pause a book and pick up a separate book and do another book? have multiple books paused ready to cash in the rewards one day at a time?

Most of the suggestions that you quoted rectify pretty much everything you've mentioned here.
1 pause per book, only 1 book at a time, time limitation on how long it can be paused for. etc

Although I understand the concern, as books are only usable once - but I don't know if I like this idea or not. Choosing when to use a book is kind of part of the experience.

On the flip side, it's not like you can't pause reading a book IRL lol.

How about the bookmark adds a chance that the rest of the book simply can't hold your attention and you forfeit the rest of the benefit? Then make the length of time it was "paused" part of the roll. So a quick little thing (a 3 day ranked war) barely budges the chance of failure, but waiting 350ish days until the following Halloween has a serious risk of failure?

You don't get to pause your book just because the bully down the street decides to steal your lunch money-

...that's PART OF TORN.

R- to all suggestions that request a kinder, gentler Torn.

i'd have to disagree, Players love the idea cause it benefits them on a personal level.

however imagine you get a reduced fly book.. you pause it when you go offline, or pause it when you wanna take a week off. people would benefit massively from this. If a war comes along its a risk you take being in an active warring faction.

its something I don't think you can mitigate.

Semi-hesitant R+. Good in theory especially if you can actually find a way to balance out the concept so that it can't be abused (using one book across multiple of the same events sounds like the best example here; ugly energy for 4 halloweens???) but still can be useful for pausing the book for a war or something unexpected.

I feel like you'd need many limits, such as a limit on the length of the pause, and how many times you can pause the book to name the two big ones. Perhaps also a cooldown in between pauses as well so you can't back-to-back pause the book for weeks/months on end.

Spitballing rough numbers here.... but maybe 2 pauses per book that last for 1 week max (no way in hell should you be able to pause it for months at a time, if that's the case then you should take a short leave from your faction to sit in a training faction), with a pause cooldown of a few days? You can resume reading the book at any time, at the cost of forfeiting the remainder of that current pause. You also shouldn't be able to start another book while another is paused; once you start a book it has to be finished before you can touch another one. I feel like if a sudden war were to happen this could give a good buffer for the reader so that their book isn't completely wasted.
