Though there's really no "One liner" that can sum up Torn. Torn is a very expansive game, and it will take you a while to get your head around all of it.
Here are a few key points to make note of when beginning which aren't necessarily obvious:
- Higher happy comes from better housing, and this happy increases your gym gains fundamentally. - Levelling up right now isn't as important as stats overall and your first 14 days are useful for you to gain information and experience playing the game in a peaceful state. - You are protected from stronger players older than 14 days old in these 14 days. - If you join a faction your protection will not always apply (if they are in a war e.g.) there are conditions in which stronger players will be able to attack you, but leaving the faction reinstates the full protection. - Beyond that, follow the Torn tutorial/starter missions as these will introduce you to the various aspects of the game so that after 14 days you will be ready to go. - When you have enough mission credits, purchase a piggybank asap - save your money in it. - If you withdraw any money, the piggybank will smash, but you can deposit money in it infinitely. So only smash it when you are buying items like a house with a vault or for renting your first Private Island + airstrip at level 15.
For more information on the game there are some good tutorials that have been compiled by players, here are a few recommended ones. Make sure you copy and paste these links into your browser for instant access to these guides:

There will be plenty of time to attack people later. If you want to be competitive, you've gotta spend a lot of energy in the gym. I should have 10x more battle stats than I do have because I've done a lot of attacks. It definitely is a marathon lol my acct just passed 5k days.
Just my 2 cents, when chaining I try to only hit in-actives and people not in factions. I feel like there's less chance of retaliation and making enemies that way. That's probably common sense to older players but always good advice IMO for new people like myself. Oh and train, train hard and often. If you're in a warring faction you will level up plenty from fighting and won't have to attack as much outside of wars to level up. :)
My biggest mistake was rushing and overwhelming myself to get good at this. Best advice is to take your time and understand the game without having that urge to be the best at it.
Racing costs too much to do day 1. I really hurt my net worth growth by going hard on racing when my networth was still under 100m. I happened to luck out that my first Christmas Town and winning WKT Newbie Division saved me from that mistake.
Still, it can be a lot of fun to race while grinding up to being able to war and play a significant role in events.
