Is it better to train one at a time, four at a time, ten at a time? Does the number of trains in one go make a difference? TIA

nope, the number of gym trains at any given point doesn't matter. You can train in increments of 1 or all your e in 1 go and you'll get the same result.
I ran some tests with my old faction and left the data in their forums lol, but iirc the data was ... inconclusive. It came out to something like:
-from 0 to ~25k in a stat one click trains give ~0.2-0.3% difference
-between 25k-1m spamming 1 trains give between 0.5-0.7% difference
-above 1m/stat the difference is basically null (0.05-0.1% in either direction)
It's all within the margin of error, and all can be explained by gym rng, but there was some patterns showing. If I had a guess the game attempts to take into account for each individual train in a "one click train" but ends up having some kind of rounding errors that skew it ever so slightly, but ofc a) I don't have the data anymore to reference, and b) the sample size was only maybe 100 tests, so this could be completely wrong. Interesting experiment though! I might try to recreate it with my current peeps to retest in the near future :)
Even if true, the small optimization is probably not worth worrying about for most players, just do whatever feels better for you - if you prefer watching your numbers increase over and over spam away to victory, if you prefer just one click bump and dump, do that.

the above is correct. it all boils down to your happiness level once you reach the soft cap with the 0.006% - 0.169% margin of error
