For the sake of how much Chedburn makes a year, can you seriously fix the attack loaders and update your servers from having a 5-10 second delay upon starting a fight?

Getting a bit ridiculous
Punish3r [671176]
The whole premise of this game is attacking, yet probably one of the slowest flawed parts of it lately. It has progressively got worse in the past few weeks, what’s changed?

I am afraid you need to provide more details to help troubleshoot the issue, the exact timestamp of when the issue happened, the Pod that you were connected to, the attack log where you noticed the lag. We already have an open topic on this. I will pass this along to Joe to see if we want anything else besides this and if we want to keep this duplicate topic open.

I checked this in the morning and now again and cannot seem to find any issues:

How much do I make a year? Regardless, buying new servers doesn't resolve these kinds of software issues. There's very few things you can throw money at to resolve these days.

To this date, we've never been able to reproduce these kinds of delays, not even once. I've never seen anything other than perfectly fast and reliable times. There is however an ongoing project to try and figure out why it is occasionally slow for some people, it's been unsuccessful so far.

Brings about a wholly other yet quite related question, though. I don't know what it was, but I reached out a couple of months ago to staff about my game literally not being able of loading anything at all in less than even 2-3 minutes. Dragged along for roughly a month where I really couldn't do anything at all properly while everything else on my end was working perfectly fine, changing network and/or device didn't help it either, and I never got an answer as to why this was happening, but some time later it just "resolved itself" and everything was back to normal. I would very much want to know what the cause was, and whether it is something that is/was happening to a multitude of people or just me.

Prime example last night. I’m at my PC, plugged in, on Wi-Fi with no internet issue. I click start fight and as you can see, I was literally loading for 6 seconds without being able to click one of my weapons to hit…it then took an additional 4 seconds for any 3 of the options leave mug or Hosp to show up. That 10 second mug should’ve taken roughly 2 seconds, not 10. I have been experiencing lag issues specifically on the attack loader just like this. Can provide more attack logs. I forgot which pod I was on last night, but I readily try to switch pods to get a better speed

When you guys test do you turn off Cloudflare? Not sure what kind of testing environment you are using, but I would like to help you reproduce it if possible. Have you tried joining many NPC fights? Those lag a lot as well and it might be related. You would need to join when there are many people also in the fight for it to lag.

Some attacks work fine, but about 40% of all my attacks have random lag spikes. It's worse when a lot of factions are doing wars or chains. A normal ping test will not show up any lag spikes typically. Only the attack page is affected.

I will try to get you some video if that would actually help?
Punish3r [671176]
I'm sorry, I don't have a video screen recording system able to do what you do. But what I can say is the buttons are taking 5+ seconds to even show upon initiating a fight. If there is some way more info I can provide to help resolve this issue I will. Times are far from perfectly fast and reliable times

Yes the solution does not involve new hardware. It involves [background color=var(--bbc-body-bg-color)]aurel1[/background] spending 30 seconds to revert this wholly spaghetti code induced lag.

For some reason those 30 seconds of dedicated time are not coming. Whether thats some bureaucratic nightmare where tickets are being ignored, or mismanagement I dont know. It is telling though when a HUGE aspect of the game (attacking) has been left for over a year now in a non-performant state.

How do I know? because i've already been through this whole song and dance.

If aurel1 doesn't know what changes they made, simply checking whatever versioning exists for what changes were made on 18/08/21. Thats the last time we spoke and modifications were done on the fly (because you know torn dev in prod) and everything was snappy and performant as one would expect whilst also keeping the 1s attack turns.

The whole reason WHY we have these poor performance attacks is because theres some stupid spaghetti code transaction locks aimed at preventing people getting mugged into negatives. The problem though is that this change doesn't fix the problem. Instead it makes the problem worse, because it forces a bunch of people to bottleneck their attacks into the very same second, making the racing condition even worse.

The problem as it stands is one of trade-offs. As developers it should be pretty easy to write some code which informs you of how many people per day are mugged into negatives. (the racing condition) From this you make a qualitative assessment on whether degrading the entirety of attacks (as it is now) is worth it for the 0.00000001% of attacks which result in negative on hand balance. My position is that it isnt worth it. (bonus points, as a result of doing this you can gauge the effectiveness of your transaction locks, which im reasonably confident you are in the complete dark about).

I appreciate that entirety of torn developers do not actively play nor care for the plight of regular players but really I feel we can do better than this. Torn city performed better in 2008 than it does now in 2022. I don't think thats a good position to be in.

It really sucks that YOU CAN and SHOULD fix this but when asking torn development team to make those 30 seconds of changes over the span of this 1+ YEAR bug, the response from YOU and others is

As someone who focuses on the speed of his attacks, this bug gets me several times every day. I experience it both on mobile and PC.

I will click "Start Fight" and will get some loading style ellipses anywhere from 1 second, to in extreme cases almost 10. Then once I am able to click a weapon to hit with, it will happen again. And then yet again when it is supposed to leave the end of fight options.

I figure 1-2 seconds might be standard, but 10? That hurts. And I know it sounds like an exaggeration, but I counted it once.

Pops's post is well thought out and articulated. If that is indeed the problem, it seems like the fix should be simple.

What on earth are you talking about? Very little of your post makes any sense, it's all literally nonsense, mental.

Despite just receiving the odd attack log here and there, never even seeing a video of this issue, nor any actual meaningful data like frequencies or duration, we've still spent a huge amount of time trying to debug this problem to little effect. Still to this date, we've never been able to reproduce the issue ourselves. How often does this even occur? With every attack you make? 1 in 5? 1 in 100? Is it certain times of the day? I don't think any of us developers could even guess at this point because everyone who's mentioned this problem has provided conflicting or over-exaggerated info. Out of tens of thousands of daily players, it's also just been a few individuals repeatedly reporting this problem - so we've barely had any idea where to even start.

Our closest guess currently is that very rarely, there is a specific issue on our DB3 server which causes the two-dozen or so attacking inserts and update queries within a single turn to suddenly take about 0.2 seconds instead of 0.0004 seconds, which theoretically could increase the loading time of the whole turn to several seconds - but this should be very temporary, just for a few minutes - and if this was the case, we only see it potentially happening a couple of times per day.

Since 16:28:49 today, I've been running a script which runs 10,000 of these queries every 10 seconds, and logging these results so we can potentially correlate them with something. Usually just 1 in 10,000 are suddenly slow (suddenly taking 0.2 seconds), but occasionally this has gotten up to around 10 / 10000 so far - I've yet to find any useful data.

I think to start with, without any exaggeration, I need to know how often people are really experiencing this, and if other people are definitely experiencing it with you at the exact same time.

Maybe create a poll in GD to ask how often people experience this and to ask for logs and videos?

3-4 seconds delays from the last 10 or so fights I initiated, sometimes more than once in a fight:

EDIT: Or, here, in this fight I had a 5 second lag to start, and I'm assuming that KiwiSoldier didn't purposefully wait around for 6 seconds to make a hit on Flamingo either:

Numerous people have provided logs in another thread. Countless and countless of logs. Some of these people are experienced muggers and have show you videos of the issue. Pops posted a video with a 6 second delay in that thread.

What do you think happens when people have spans of 3-4-5-6 seconds between turns? Is it them not clicking the button and joking around in another tab?

The reason why "ONLY" a few players report the issue is:
1. too many casuals
2. they see others have posted the issue
3. you're not interested

If you don't know where to start perhaps ask for what you need rather than them pulling out of their arse whatever things you need to fix this.
YellowFlash [2694731]
I experience this lag very often on mobile and hate doing wars while on mobile even when I have good wifi.

Usually takes 4,5 seconds to load, then 4,5 seconds again after first hit. So when I use Flash or pepper spray, it's really irritating having missed out on those 5,6 seconds possibly 5,6 hits while under temp effects.

Fix pls

3-4 seconds delays from the last 10 or so fights I initiated, sometimes more than once in a fight:

What does this mean though? Are you saying that every attack you're seeing a minimum of 3 seconds for every single turn? I need better, clearer information please. Can you create a video of this happening perhaps? This will help us dramatically.
undo [2090073]
It means that out of the last 10 or so fights (when I posted that), those 6 I linked to each had 3+ second delays in them (and some of those fights had more than one delay each). So, not every fight, but a rather high percentage of fights. Our war is over now, so I won't be attacking more right now. I'm not sure how to create a video.

To be clear, this has been going on a lot, not just during those fights. I'm just agreeing with others that yes, this is an issue, and no, I hadn't posted about it before because others had already reported on it (plus, how to be sure if it's Torn vs my internet... but a lot of people in my faction also complained about the lag at a couple of different times during our 5 hours war today, as well as at times during previous wars).
Offertory [2487783]
Posting a place holder to say I have similar issues. Often the mug button takes 3-6 seconds to register once clicked. Maybe happens 50% of the time. I will aim to record some later today.

Edit. Actually after seeing the 40+ examples in the other thread, I won't waste my time.
