I'm going to try word this so I don't sound like a disgruntled old man.

So this should be easier to digest because it's a game, and many of you have dumped years into this clicking mug hosp leave. If someone created a script that let them save 5 hours of hunting RW turtles and did it for them in 5 minutes, you'd be pissed too. I choose to play the role of a GFX artist, a pioneer who sold about 1000+ sigs from 08-11. I got level 100s popping up to me telling me they bought sigs off me 15 years ago at level 10, helped inspire them to make their own/build a collection etc. My aim this time round is to do the same, help some artists where possible and come back in 10 years to see some giants.

I also want to do my part and make sure my people eat. The collab auction gave me the opportunity to look into the minds of artists via PSDs. Those guys put a lot of TIME into their work, effort too. Your effort and my effort is different, right? You might see a novice piece and think oh that took no effort. Just because it takes you 2 minutes to create something, it could take a novice a lot more time.

AI will kill off real artists, real fast. Especially the novice ones. The good ones will also see their orders depleted, as the unknowing mass go to what they think looks cool- and flock to the AI artists over the clearly-below average learning novice workers.

"I want a man wearing a hockey mask, holding a baseball bat. Purple colours and some red"

So for a novice, who is already paranoid about their work up against some of the heavyweights, would overthink- spend a lot of time looking for the perfect picture. Then they'd spend ages trying to get the baseball bat into the image- and then colour correction could take forever. After all that, because of their lack of experience, their work is average at best. An AI artist, they type the request into an engine and it gives them the 10 results to choose from, all if which are much more aesthetically pleasing than the novice. They could then "adjust" the image by changing colours and adding text.

If AI is used to create resources, I won't argue its use. A texture, lighting, render, vector? Cool, why not. I'm probably using textures that were generated by AI without knowing? But when I see AI artists generate a "character"- ready made with background and everything, then slap a text on it. I will step in and call bullshit, even if it brings me aggro. And I advise all other real artists to do the same.

Are slap on text artists any better? No. But I'm talking about the ones that find ready made sigs and slap text on. Or the ones that Google "cool background"- put a render on top and and some text. That's a nono.

Unknowing customers flock to the graphics forum, having never had a sig in their life, and will jump at the sight of some of these AI generated gfx. During the collab I spoke to many talented artists that were struggling to get customers. But I see people with AI images everywhere. AI only became prevalent a year or so ago, in the next 2/3 years it will be far, far more advanced and completely kill off amateur artists trying to get customers, hell even your cl3ric0ls, LSDs and Jetz will see a decline in footfall if we don't do something about it when it creeps into this forum.

I want to make it clear this is nothing personal, I've spoken to some good people that do AI art- but I'll die on my shield to ensure the people that spend time learning, improving and put in a lot of effort benefit rather than "let me type what I want and have a generator create it" artists.

F*cking robots. I'll bump this till I turn blue in the face.

Customers- when artists send you a graphic, always put it into a reverse image search engine and see what comes up. But a lot of AI art is unique so won't flag up, it's down to artists to smell the BS and call it out.

I know you were, Shonuff too and a bunch of others. You can sit back a bit now, let me get the abuse for pointing out sh*tty AI frauds :)

Facts. Nothing but facts. I’m too busy for gfx rn but AI has been taking over and people think they’re “one of the best” when using AI, seen this countless of times. I’m glad all these real artists are starting to become more often to put these AI artists to bed. No AI can ever beat creativity and unique style.

I remember a good few months back 90% of people on here were doing AI all of a sudden and it stopped me even coming here for awhile. So glad it's back to where it should be where its talented people making sigs again. My bank balance is not so glad, but worth every penny. You can easily spot AI and it'll never look as good as an artist

The unfortunate thing is, AI art is only going to get better and better too...

AI is something we're all going to have to deal with threatening our livelihoods over the next 10-15 years, and I've been saying for years that people aren't taking the ramifications of it even nearly seriously enough.

However current models and training techniques, there is an emerging "Ouroboros" contagion-like effect (that has already become somewhat apparent in the well known language models), that might save certain jobs, at least in the short-term. This issue involves AI output becoming so ubiquitous on the internet, that models are being trained on the slightly flawed output of previous generations of AI, and its distorting the quality/accuracy of the output of the new models (like photocopying a photocopy in a sense), which then trains the next generation, and so on.

But if you think its bad now, wait until they can completely replace software developers (and thus improve themselves)...then we hit a singularity point.

So many people I've spoken to tell me about this wasteland filled with undead zombie robots. Almost hard to believe, if I look at the first page and a bit I can see at least 15+ good threads now :D

Agree wholeheartedly.

However, AI does have a place in the world of GFx, but only in the right places. I have recently been commissioned to create Xbox avatars, with the brief that they want a photo of themselves used, but so it doesn't look like them or is the original photo. So, AI did the job, I changed it worked on the image, made one 'wink' and another 'smile', added a background, text and changed the body of the AI results too.

No, I cannot take credit for the whole image, but it was working to the brief as required. It's not something I have used to create anything within Torn, I don't think that's right. But if the brief is something that AI can do in spades, then maybe I would consider it after discussion with the client.

Undoubtedly, AI generated photos has came to our life for better or worse.. The AI aint the bad guy here but is the people who claimed they are able to custom you with the use of AI and just slapping text on them..

I do used them for some render when the request is somewhat too specific on some details like the latest one I did. (his torn id is faygokilledme so he wanted a grim reaper that hold a can of faygo pov with deadly setting)

This is the outcome

stuff i used from AI generated

[image: i.imgur.com][image: i.imgur.com]

cropped out the stuff that I did not need with smudge effect cause I did not keep the original cropped

added wings from the 2nd ai generated

next, crop out a faygo cans and superimposed into the reaper. compare with before and after making it blend in it with the reaper

[image: i.imgur.com] [image: i.imgur.com]

next added a scythe..

and finally add my own touch to make it look like the outcome shown above

Can I challenge this a bit?

What's the definition of an artist?

It takes a lot of creativity to write code, solve problems, innovate new solutions ...or even innovate tech that provides innovative solutions, like AI. I have developed software, mentored and managed developers for years and I can tell you that creativity is a huge part of dev. There are many developers in Torn. Ask them as well.

I would say that developers are artists too, just another type. AI isn't bad. It's just another canvas.

...Unless pencil artists are boycotting painted artwork too. ...but I don't think you mean that.

Does that at least make sense?

And I certainly don't think AI will put artists "out of work". Eventually artists will incorporate AI into their greater projects as one piece of a collaborative whole, like a digital artist who uses photo, freehand, and text ...or a sculptor who uses stone and steel. Many great artists even had workers working on other pieces that were part of their large projects -why can't AI be one of those workers?
- It certainly adds new challenges
- It will certainly push art to a new level and, I believe, be better for art and artists overall in the end

Here's an example of another kind of art. It takes imagination, etc.

Just food for thought.
KingWink [2374710]
While I agree with everything you said, isn't art about the expression or imagination in visual form to be appreciated for its emotional power? Emotional power is subjective to each individual and as a result the graphics are only as good as the person buying them. Sure talent will always shine but if someone buying a AI graphic and they love it then that's art.

I 100% agree with all you said, but I also know in my experience regardless of the field you follow, if you don't get on board with the way the world is heading...you get left behind. Coming from a place of love and respect for all these players talents, My advice is embrace it.

I think what most ppl against ai are saying is that it isn't the ai itself.....it's the ppl claiming they are designing custom art when all they are doing is charging ppl to add text to an AI generated image....as stated B4 AI is great for generating unique stocks for rendering out for use
CaReNzA [226380]
Could be even worst... a good artist will always have work ... but if you studied your whole life to be for example a medical imaging professional (CT, MRA, etc) ... you are about to be overtaken because AI will do it better and faster than humanly possible ..... 10% of humans at best will be needed in a short future...
