Is 2024 dead for events? Or can we create our own? Lets find out.

Well, it's 2024 and our new Calendar is now visible. Sadly, the major events of the past, have slowly been disappearing, one after the other. And we are literally down to just 2 attacking based events now. Elimination in September, and Halloween in October.

For those that are newer to Torn. And by that I mean 10 years or younger. There once was a Zombie competition in torn called "Torn of the Dead". I believe, from memory, it ran in October in 2010, 2011, and 2012 before it was retired and replaced with the Endurance Competition. Some of you may have seen, or even purchased some of the retired Honor Bars for these events in the Token Shop.

(I've been made aware I might have the order of these two events backwards, but either way, ages ago.)

October is now taken and used up with the massively successful and very popular Halloween Trick or Treat event.

A Slightly Altered World History:

On April 26, 2024, a sudden surge of power during a reactor systems test destroyed Unit 4 of the nuclear power station at Chernobyl, Ukraine, in the former Soviet Union. The accident and the fire that followed released massive amounts of radioactive material into the environment.

In the weeks following the unfortunate disaster at the Chernobyl plant, the radioactive material spread, falling as radioactive rain in all parts of the world. A lot of people died. The direct exposure to the radiation mutilated their bodies. The trouble was, they didn't stay dead.

On May 1, 2024, the first case of a fatality from radiation was reported in Torn City. On May 4, 2024 the first killing occurred. A living corpse, a radioactive mutation of a former Torn City resident, had killed an innocent civilian by biting deeply into their flesh. With no vaccine or medical treatment available, citizens, doctors, businessmen and women all began to flee for their lives. The infection was growing seemingly with little to no escape.

The dead live. The Torn of the Dead has begun.

The Event in a Nutshell (As it was played in the past.)

Chedburn would reach out to a handful of extremely high stat players (Bodybagger was a popular one) and designate them as Zombies. These players would then start to attack other players using the "Bite" option once they defeated their target. Bitten victims would then also become Zombies. The goal of the event was to last to the end of the event remaining a Civilian without getting turned into a zombie.

There were merits for killing zombies, and of course biting other players.
There was of course a chance of not getting infected, but this chance was small.
There was also the Zombie Brain and Human Head items given as extremely rare drops.
And of course, the highly coveted merit for surviving to the end.

Many strategies were used to survive, and the last week of the event was typically utter chaos.

In Conclusion

This event was a massive favorite when it was played out the few years it was ran. It's a real shame that we lost it. But I believe that the OG Torn City players that still play today remember it dearly. It was fun, challenging, and very rewarding.

Our current month of May for 2024 is completely empty outside of museum day. Torn is very different now than it was then. Provided some slight tweaking, I think a fictional nuclear meltdown based on a past real event could play nicely into a fun event for all of us to enjoy.

This is cool, I understand the method of infecting high level players first, but it would be neat to see how it played out if there was a slightly larger number of low and mid level players infected, to see if the "horde" was able to spread to the top. Wish I was there for this in the past!

I seem to remember it being the opposite. A small number of level 1 new players were infected and it still spread like wild fire with BB getting infected in hours as group attacks make his stats near worthless. he wanted to get infected as fast as he could so he could get the merits and helped people beat him (Get down to very low HP and unequip)

yeah the event was removed for a reason, it was junk. making a good event is about making good mechanics and whilst this one was different it was fundamentally not good.

it could be revamped though, but it would require actual thought put into it. one of the biggest issues was containing the spread, so maybe limiting the amount of infectious bites per day to 1-5 or something.

Group attacking didn't apply debuffs until 2014, if you attacked in a group, each attacker was treated separately, with the defender attacking back. Bodybagger was pretty much invincible until this point in time.
Ohadik [424017] Wiki Contributor
This is something I could definitely get behind. Limiting the spread by only applying infection so many times per day would be a nice addition.

I really don't think the event in it's original form was junk tho... If you wanna talk about junk, the event that replaced it, the Endurance Challenge. That was absolute garbage.
Recap if you forgot just how bad it was: https://wiki.torn.com/wiki/Endurance_Challenge

But I think Torn of the Dead is viable with some tweaks for sure.
Pops [1025410]
also inverse the logic to these events - its always the case that the high battle stat people are sitting pretty outside whilst the lower ones are cowering in hospital.

make it so that a portion of their battlestats are returned as some 'zombie strength' value or something so that high battle stat people get targeted first. make them afraid.
Ohadik [424017] Wiki Contributor
Could make it a ratio for high stat players. 1,000,000 stat player attacks a 100,000 stat player.

So their chance of infecting them would be 100,000 / 1,000,000 or 1 in 10...

Then the same could be applied to single/group attacks on higher stat players.

5 players with 100,000 stats attack a 1,000,000 stat player... 1 in 10, times 5 attackers means 5 in 10 chance to infect. Just take the total stats of all attackers to apply the bonus, if it exceeds the higher stat player, it's 100% infection rate.

The only question is, how do 5 attackers share the Zombie brain if one drops? haha

I loved the endurance challenge and would love to see some form of it come back. As a player who didn't really understand the game for many years of playing it was the first time I was introduced to a number of things. Stacking energy and learning how to do 20 attacks in 20 minutes come to mind (this was 50 energy attack days)

I very much like this. However I'd like to see more rewards for being a zombie, (maybe chance to get some loot drops and stuff) and for the non infected, stuff that can help them defend against infected.

A crazy idea would be that are both racing to a certain goal. Maybe the zombies are racing to gather all of the falling radiation around America and then use it to bomb torn? While the non infected are trying to develop a cure.

We could assist have both sides also trying to buff themselves, like non infected getting certain roles like disinfection or researcher, while zombies get roles like horde manager and stuff etc.

Having come from WoW and watching a few times the Plague spread, that was actually studied by the CDC, I would put forth that once Patient 0 started, it will be a week at most before the vast majority of Torn is in shambles, overflowing with Zombies. Balance would a big big part of this, so, once you are infected, you are no longer a 10 year 100 billion stat human. You are a day 1 Zombie. 100/100/100/100. No gym gains. No armour or weapons as zombies are mindless killing machines. Killing other zombies for dominance and infecting humans would be the "gym" of a zombie. Everyone starts evenly, so everyone has the same chances. Mechanics should be fairly easy to sort, make it a function of how many kills you have, how fast you kill, infection rate...such as that.

Then, as the event progresses, you can time gate a "cure", lots of RP about scientists holed up needing supplies from out of country. Then you let the humans that remain fly out and gather what is needed by adding a variety of meds to the foreign stores. Of course, the pay should be good as you will sell directly to an NPC that prices based on what is needed. This NPC can be attacked, like the normal NPC, but only by zombies and definitely not at first to knock down a percentage of the progress, making for some drama. Then, when the cure is ready, the attack that happens on the NPC after cures all the zombies in that attack, they are restored to humans and previous abilities and granted an immunity. They then head out and kick ass.

Now, they will ~never~ get everyone cured. But at the same time the event ends, a certain number of people, untold, retain the virus, ready for a new outbreak to begin.

What would be more fitting for torn is the purge.

Everyone gets a random target every X amount of time to kill. Participation is optional. Don't wanna participate? don't attack your target. Successfully defeating your target gives you a new target. Losing against your target removes you from the competition.
However you can also be removed from the competition by another player who has you as the target, meaning you'd need to stay agile to be alive.

Tokens are granted based off of how long you stayed alive and by how many targets you killed.

ive been saying this for years!

i know that the event sort of fell out of favor because it became to repetitive, but i honestly think it could be a great event with lots of replayability if it was adjusted every year to be a little different.

Someone else also brought up Torn endurance, which would also be great to have back

Very good film. Love the Simon Pegg and Nick Frost duo.

also this is Tarantino’s favourite British film. Just as a fun fact.
