As a new player this is what was recommended to me, apparantly this is what everyone uses and it has helped me some
Yes
Stumble through it, find a faction - Have fun
The best way to play Torn for the first time is f**k around and find out. Save the guides for later. If you f**k up bad enough you can always restart, but honestly it's a big race to nowhere, so if you aren't enjoying the journey, then it's an utter waste of time.
You want to get to lvl 15 in order to unlock traveling.
I suggest attacking This guy to lvl up. Good exp gains.

Find a faction, minimum 500k respect, aim for 1m or more, you can start looking here
Your faction mates will provide lot of useful advice and proper factions have perks that help you massively (hence why you shouldn't go under 500k respect)
Never join any faction that doesn't have at the very minimum 100k respect, you're crippling yourself and enabling noob abusers.
In gym, pick Defense or Dexterity, whichever you like, Defense is stronger at low and medium stats so I would suggest that, prioritize your chosen stat and don't train the other stat at all, once you're rich enough you can come back and train the 4th stat for fraction of the time/energy you'd have to spend normally, using 99k happy jumps. I'd suggest training in ratio Defense - Strength - Speed 3:2:1, but generally you want to train the stat according to the best gym you can use.
Find a job in a player run company, your best option is Music store, it gives you 30% faster gym progression, but if you have trouble affording 2-3 xanax a day, try Sweet Shop or Adult Novelty for the cash income instead.
Don't spend money on "better" gear, 9/10 times it's not worth it. All you need is a Kodachi/Macana, Enfield, Full Body Armor and Combat pants, helmet, gloves and boots. Combat vest is worse and more expensive then Full Body Armor, that's why you don't use full set.
Try to get Inravenous education soon, but you might want to prioritize education courses that increase your Gym gains by few %.
Rent max happy Private Island as soon as possible, the more happy, the more stats you gain, the less stats you have, the higher effect happy has. You can find a spouse to split rent or even some people who will only ask you to pay upkeep (352k/day iirc)
To gain EXP in order to level up, attack people you know you can beat and choose the "leave" option, prioritize higher level, the higher level the more EXP, don't attack level 1. There are multiple leveling target lists in guides forums to choose from.
Also try to loan a weapon with "Proficience" perk from faction armory, if you don't know how, ask in faction chat if they have one.
And always drink beer. Seriously, it's basically free and gives you lot of nerve, especially in a real faction with +50% alcohol boost.
All good advice from Beerson.
Also don't forget to do your new player missions. They literally walk you through everything that you need to do to understand the basics of the game.
Okay so I’m going to expand on this more than I’ve seen so far in the thread up to Ohadiks post, if someone else posts while I’m typing this out, that’s what I’ve seen with this thread.
1) Torn is just a text based sandbox game more or less. It’s multiplayer but you can choose how you want to play and progress. You can either be competitive or casual or a mixture of both.
2) One of the first things is read the rules. They do ban players for breaking them, this game has been around close to 20 years so they are actually pretty strict on rule breaking to make sure it stays fair.
3) Read a lot of the tutorials- there is so much more that can be done with this game than just gym, crime, poker and war. But first make sure you know how to protect yourself from scams and protect your money.
4) Even though this game is so long, you can become fairly good in a relatively short period of time - just do 3 Xanax a day, make sure you always have cooldowns going on drug, booster and medical.
5) Choose what you want to focus on or if you want to focus on everything. Set goals. Make friends. Torn can become addicting in a good way with the right people around you.
Good luck!
