RIP Bazaar API

Last night , during the latest patch, this change was made:

 [API] Change 'market' -> 'bazaar' to return empty array response as it no longer serves any purpose

This change means that there can't be any script that will auto fill the price based on bazaar listing ,but only on item market listing. One more step closer on shutting down the bazaars!

Moreover, the itemmarket request is available only through API_V2, indicating that we are gradually transitioning all requests to API_V2

There are few alternative item market websites already, which I don't think will get hit from this change. The question is, will those websites continue to be free after the new tariff?

Jokes aside, having near real time data on bazaars is almost impossible with current constraints: only way to get user bazaar data is to scan all users with bazaars or certain users can choose to list their items manually.

Also, bazaar owners can sell items, change prices or close their bazaars any time, all those actions will make bazaar data invalid/incorrect.

Final thing is IP limit, you cannot build a tool which scans all bazaars all day: it will likely hit temporary IP ban and no easy workaround.

So, there are two ways for 3rd tools/websites: show all possible bazaars and items but with some delay or show only bazaars and items users want to show but faster way.

How did it not serve a purpose anymore? 

Doubt. This is how Ched envisioned bazaars from what I understand. So its either advertisment your bazzar and become trader, sell to traders or pay tax.

yep this philosophy of chedburn's in relation to bazaar's is the exact same one that chris wilson of grinding gear games had. they went more than a decade not having some ingame auction house and people being reliant on 3rd party trade through alternative sites.

in the end, it doesn't work - people find a way round it. all it will mean now is that rather than everybody having fair and legal access to it, you'll find people who are willing to cheat who will automate and scrape pages for it. 

ched even knows the latter part intimately, having lived through it too. so all these changes to the api are quite a departure from conventional wisdom and known non-working solutions.

Item market does it inhernetly now with the Select All button btw.

Sad that item price anchors won't be useful now though. My "I didnt check the market before listing" flip moneys 😭 (note: I don't put up price anchors, and remove my items if they are left up as an anchor by other buyers 😤)

But yeah I feel you. The API changes recently have been some swings and misses 😑

This changed was announced some time ago. The reason is because the information is not publicly available anymore.

The data was

a listing ID (which cannot be mapped to a user)

the amount of an item

the price of an item

Previously you could go to the item market and see the 3 cheapest bazaars and work through the list that way. Now there is no possible way to use this data.

So market->bazaar is dead, and user->bazaar lives on.

scripts that broke down were harmless.

Abusive scripts that work through user ID are still working.
