im sure im miles away from them being worth for me but out of curiosity whats the ideal time to use parachute etc

When you have about at least 2.5 to 3.5 billions in dexterity!
Edit: At 3.5 billions it might still be cheaper to use energy cans and get the some stats than 1 parachute. -> sell parachute, buy cans, get more stats. It is easy to calculate. Do one train to estimate the gains, then compare the gains.
