Proposals

  1. Allow us to disable mail from users we don't know, just like we already can for chat messages.
  2. Allow us to define who "users we don't know" actually means, with simple rules such as whitelists and blacklists.

Communicating with other players via chat messages or mail is not at all necessary to progress through the game or even reach end game, so it's quite weird to not already have some sort of "opt out" setting for this.

Ever since I have decided to take on the army job, my inbox is just full of job offers (I even got one while writing this). And if I wasn't in a faction I would probably get faction recruitment offers too. I see this as spam, useless junk notifications that I don't want to see but can't do anything about.

In the process of hunting for the Samaritan title, I have inadvertently added over 1.5k players to "users I know" because it turns out that sending someone an item automatically adds them to this list and now they can message you via chat.

Just let us define who we actually want to be able to receive communications and notifications from.

Define irony, person that causes over 1500 useless notifications to other people that they don't know is unhappy that they receive useless notifications caused by people that they don't know.

There is a lesson in there somewhere.

There is no other way to get the Samaritan title, the players get given an item for free, without any message, plug, promotion, offer, etc.

JackKelly [2271177]

like anyone cares about that beer or brick or whatever cheap item you're sending out. it's still a notification. some people playing on torn pda actually get the equivalent of a text message for each notification. It's no different than you getting and equally useless job offer.

Also, what the f**k are you doing in the army anyway? Get a company job and the job offers will cut down considerably.

2-3K [2366953]

Why did you come here just to hate and tell me how to play the game? I don't want a company job, I've already spent hundreds of days in a few just for them to lose stars and lock me out of my job perks. With army I can sell spies for $3m, never get locked out of my job perks, go offline for 200 days, not worry about addiction level, and train stats. I'm a casual player and these perks outweigh working in a company job, at least at the moment.

And alright, some players received 1 notification from me that they got a vicodin, I wouldn't say that's exactly the same as me getting up to 5 mails whenever I'm online.

You're making this about me when this is supposed to be about improved communication preferences.

JackKelly [2271177]

Im not trying to tell you how to play. I could give a f**k less how you play. Im just telling you how to solve your problem without totally undoing one of the primary means for companies and factions to recruit people. Believe it or not, some people don't realize they could be in a better situation than their current job and occasionally happily accept the new job offered.

messages seem easy enough to ignore if you are just hell bent on not communicating with anyone.

lol, really? A text based browser game not having an option to completely block people from contacting you is shocking? Does your real life email allow you to block all incoming mails? Does your text messaging app allow you to block all incoming texts? What does 2025 have to do with anything?

There is already an option to block people you haven't interacted with from contacting you. The trick is to not send out over 1500 items to random strangers, thus making it possible for them to contact you.

I agree with your playstyle. That said, one thing needs to be cleared up. You made this about you. You don't get to whine about the difficulties of your chosen playstyle, then whine about people critiquing it.

In all fairness, I downvoted your suggestion. There are times I ask people for things, or strike up conversation for some random reason (pun intended). If I ask someone if they can revive me while overseas, if I chat with my war opponents, if I tell someone before I claim their bounty because they're online; all dead in the water because people get a stick up the backside one day and turn into a mute. Torn is an MMO - Massive Multiplayer Online. How can you have a multiplayer game when everyone is refusing to cooperate?

If you have a problem with your playstyle, change your playstyle. If you wish to keep your playstyle, write in your profile that you're not looking for a company. You could be the director of a company and not log in for "200 days, not worry about addiction level," and you get the bonus of no one messaging you.

yes, yes, yes, and the fact that most other MMOs have that functionality. also not 1 person said "Block ALL incoming mails" OP specifically said "FROM PEOPLE I DON'T KNOW", and you've completely ignored the 2nd point in every response on the topic "Allow us to define who "users we don't know" actually means, with simple rules such as whitelists and blacklists."

what is your fixation on "sEnDiNg 1500 ItEmS tO RaNdOm StRaNgErS" and what does that have to do with me?

JackKelly [2271177]

f**ks sake, let me dumb it all the way down. the 1500 items doesn't apply to you, it applies to op. Since you most likely havent sent out a mass of items to strangers, then by simply checking the box below, you avoid most potential spam chats. But if you send an item to someone, then as far as the game is concerned, you know that person and they can in turn, send you chats or messages.

Now, that being said, I could give a f**k what functionality other mmo's have or dont have. Torn isnt like every other MMORPG and some of us are fine with it staying that way.

The second option. How does that in any way help the situation that op finds himself in? How are whitelists and black lists going to stop strangers from messaging you with job offers. Do you think every player in the game is going to start out on your black list and it take you whitelisting them to receive communications from them? In my experience, the opposite is true, whereas you have to blacklist specific people, and if you dont know them, then how the f**k are you going to blacklist them? Also, how is that different from adding them to your ignore list, which is already apart of the game and blocks all communication from anyone that is on it? It even blocks bounty reasons if they place a bounty on you.
