The fact that whoever that was from staff responded saying "there is a company special to see $ on hand" is like saying a police officer telling a person for J walking to make sure they wear their seat belt when they drive home later. It's very obvious to everyone that isn't what happened but still made the staff happy they were able to provide some unneeded advice.

Here is my example from yesterday while I was in a work meeting.

Yeah I don't think staff who don't know should be responding to reports that are regarding third party tools. It should be passed on to someone understands. Though, I'm pretty sure whatever bot they use is probably still "legal" under the current guidelines so it would've lead to the same result.

But if it wasn't, just passing it off as a job special is doing a disservice to the community. "This is looking like a legal script: also there a company special showing on hand" just sounds like they didn't even investigate it.

EDIT:  scratch that. I am too tired of this topic to go through talking same shit over and over again.

the real problem is they can bypass the 30 sec cache of market item. so like you said they may developed a new method already.

Yeah what I meant...If there is active mugger. He has chance to mug before scripters.

So scripters would be screwed with delay.

If you are active you deserve good mug.

Z80 [3844180]

they add 30sec delay API cache data, but some how they can developed a new method to bypass that.
the easy method to beat mug bot is let user can hide the offline/online status. so the current method bot will dead. but the new one can bypass the cache data, they can bypass in sth we dont even know :D

Implemented tracking = Ched has added a sticky note to his monitor that says 'Look at logs later.'

See you all in 2030 for the ban wave.

Scraping might be possible.

It's no magic trick.

But how to detect scrapers.

Multiple muggers less than 30s from sell.

With Linux almost impossible to detect scraping.

BobrKurwa [2841258]

No biggie. When I was actively rw trading, buyer paid mugging fees and other taxes lol

You just offer dirt cheap. Without mug ofc.

It's easily preventable to knowledgeable people. Yes.

The fact still remains that people are using third party gray area tools abusing game oversights that provide a significant advantage from outside of the game back into the game that directly impacts or can impact other players negatively.

Especially people who don't know these tools exists and that they're being targeted. Not everyone is active in the forums and knows things that occur off platform. QOL features are one thing, most people are in favor of making the game less tedious and more accessible. Mug scripts are just using exploitative measures for gain.

Most data in Torn is transferred with a request. You take some kind of action, your browser asks Torn for data, Torn sends it and your page updates. The API is like a simple to use version of this, with conveniently laid out information and restrictions on how data is sent to you. The API is not relevant in this discussion, as things (including mug scripts) using the API are not only legal, but encouraged.

The item market uses websockets, rather than fetch requests, which is sort of like a live chat between your browser and Torn. When you view an item's page you start that conversation with Torn and it tells your browser in real time "X sold", "X was added" etc. and your browser uses that to update the page with no delay. Some mug scripts utilise this by taking that info and relaying it with a discord bot while you're looking somewhere else. One person needs to have that conversation open, and it will be shared with whoever has access to the discord bot. In essence, it is indistinguishable from somebody viewing a page to watch for when something sells. I presume the new update does something like attempt to catch people mugging for a sale of an item that they were not in the "conversation" for.

Some key points:

  • There are no live updates on the item market without mug bots taking advantage of it. Even if it was changed from using websockets, there would just be a new way to do it.
  • It takes time for the mug to happen. The bot needs to relay it and ping people, then they need to load the page and attack. If you were mugged in less than a couple of seconds, it was not a mug bot, it was a coordinated attack or a sweaty nerd watching your page.
  • If you were slow enough to be mugged by one of these bots, you were probably slow enough to be mugged by an API mug bot.
  • Probably all large faction families known for mugging has one of these bots. If you don't know about it, you're not in the secret club.

I don't mug and have never used a mug bot, but I have a script which uses websockets the same way as these bots, so I don't really want the item market to be nerfed.

Side note, there are a lot of people in this thread whining about being mugged in a way irrelevant to websocket scripts. It is very easy to keep your money safe, the same way you should be keeping safe when selling things in general. Obviously you're going to be mugged if you sell things offline regardless of whether or not these scripts exist.

Chris [2685588]

They have nerfed other things too on the last update. Decent muggers will know what I'm talking about and nope it didn't require any scripts, this is manual stuff that requires patience and skill. Something I've always admired about mugging. Major blow but I guess if ranks wars didn't protect casino players enough, the last secret nerf they did just added a big layer of protection.

Edit: fixed

Mugging isnt the issue at hand, it's automating the work to find it, turning it into a hamster wheel situation. The good muggers, they are looking out and surfing for mugs, not being fed automated data to then race their 17 buddies to grab the 7m mug.

Mugging should be an art, not a face roll
