So, you were offered about half the value of a Private Island, which you had won gambling?
And you gave it away without any money changing hands, because trade had a problem?
Do you have a gambling problem that forced you to sell? Are you spending real money to gamble in the game?
This may have been a wake-up call to tell you to get out of this game, because there's a good chance that you will never prosper and will drop out sooner or later. If you are spending real money to pay for gambling, stop it now. Just stop. You will never get that money back.
I have Dissociative Identity Disorder and I was wondering if I could open an account for each of my personalities, just in case one of them becomes dominant and wants to play Torn. I wouldn't want them to play on my account because that would probably break the rules. So having accounts for all of them would make more sense, I think. What do you admins say, would that be okay?
So, I was doing some calculations today for running Xanax from South Africa to Torn and selling them on the item market.
According to YATA, the current price of Xanax in South Africa is $737,533 and the current lowest market price (at time of writing) is $847,000.
I can carry 34 items, so the total outlay is $25,076,122 and they would sell for a total of $28,798,000.
That would give me a total profit of $3,721,878 without sales tax but the 5% sales tax on the sale price amount is $1,439,900, leaving me with a total profit of $2,281,978.
So my profit is really being taxed, not at 5%, but at over 30%. And that is after I take all the risk of being mugged, having to outlay over $25,000,000 and having to travel for around 6 1/2 hours return trip.
I am left wondering if it is really worth it?
I could try selling them on my Bazaar, I suppose, but that's invisible these days.
Was it the intention of the developers and the economists to tax profits so much?
If so, what do they expect will be the long term outcome?
My other question is, why has the price for Xanax stayed fairly stable, even after the introduction of the sales tax? Are sellers so desperate to make some money that they will take the financial hit themselves? Is there an over-supply of Xanax that is helping to keep the price down? Are drug packs playing a part in setting market prices as well?
For myself, I don't think I will be running Xanax any time soon. The risk/reward is not good enough.
If you can find Xanax at the best price, that will usually give you the best profit, BUT there is a risk of being mugged, both while you are waiting for stock and after you sell the drugs. And stock sells out quickly, so you need to weigh up risk versus reward. At one point recently the price of Xanax in Japan was down to as low as 716k, which could give you a profit of 124 to 140k profit per item.
Shark fins from Hawaii are profitable and sell to a store, so much lower risk but timing is critical.
Pangolin scales from China are a good profit from further away, but timing is not as critical because they restock reasonably quickly.
Camel plushies from UAE were always the highest profit of the flushies, but you really need business class travel, or you will be wasting energy.
"The World Tourism Day bonus begins at the time you’ve set on your calendar page, which can be anywhere from 10:00 TCT to 16:00 TCT. Your choice determines when WTD starts on the 26th and ends on the 28th.
Previously, the double capacity bonus applied to anyone who departed Torn during that window. Even if you returned a month later, you kept the extra capacity for the entire trip and could fill those slots with items whenever you liked. This is no longer the case.
Travel 2.0 introduced dynamic travel capacity, meaning players can lose extra slots while in the air or abroad if your circumstances change. For example, if you’re using the Cruise Line’s 5 extra travel slots and you’re fired while abroad, you lose those slots.
The same applies to World Tourism Day. If you’re abroad when the event ends, its extra slots are removed from your travel capacity. Don't worry, this won't remove any items from your travel inventory. If you’ve already filled all of your slots, you can still bring those items back to Torn. But if you sell or trash items while abroad, your available capacity is reduced immediately."
When you search the dump you pick up an item that has been dumped by another player. Items dumped don't just vanished, they go into a pool that you draw from when you do a search, so they are still in circulation.
There are a lot of items that you can buy overseas that can be sold in Torn to NPC stores. Those prices are fixed, so Tourism Day won't affect them. At the moment, Japan is the cheapest Xanax and it has been for a while, but that changes from time to time. A while ago it was Canada that was cheapest but stock would sell out quickly and the mug risk was very high. South Africa is one of the worst places to buy Xanax but if muggers want to go and hang out there, that's fine by me.
I got a dislike on my previous response, and I am not sure why that happened? As far as I know, my information was correct, as I was going by what is written in the wiki, which is -
Closing Hour
"At the end of the Company day (at approximately 6:00 PM TCT), the company's performance is calculated. This can be seen in the amount of customers that day and the amount of gross income made. At the same time, working stats gains are automatically applied, job points are granted (one point for every one star in Company Ranking), employee pay is automatically divvied out, and employee trains are generated to be used by the director. This operation can take up to 15 minutes before the results are reflected.
While an inactive employee is a big detriment to the company, the company can float by itself without an active director; the employee trains will just stack up to the cap, and not be distributed, and stocks can eventually run out."
I know that Malverith has basically given the same information in his post, but we posted within a couple of minutes, so I was likely doing research and didn't see their post, or Malverith has edited his post and may have added information that wasn't in their original post. I really don't remember. I was unaware that players need to be in Torn for status to be updated. If that is true, make sure that you rehab early enough to make the flight home before closing hour.
At the moment I have taken all crimes to lv 100, so now I am working on earning all the merits available from those crimes, which helps increase my CE for Organised Crimes. I also have a couple of honours still available related to the Jewelry store and hustling. I am not making much money from crimes but I am making progress to maxing out all available merits and improving my OC success rate.
How much you should do is up to you but for me, I am trying to use all my natural nerve through the day, plus a refill, plus using some alcohol, but my nerve bar is 130 so it's worth it for me. If your nerve bar is a lot less, spending points for a refill would be wasteful.
Restock times can vary greatly and there is no logical equation to work out exactly when it will happen. Using something like YATA, you can work out roughly when the restock might happen but that is only a best guess as items might not restock exactly when you think they will as there can be some minor variation, even in a fairly regular pattern.
This concept that items restock on the 15 minute tick is outdated. Even in city stores it does not apply any more. I did some research on beer and I found that the restock time varied a bit but was roughly around 17 minutes, with some small variation and in an hour of watching restocks, only once did it restock in the 15 minute area and even then, it wasn't exactly on the tick. Try it sometime. Sit on Bits and Bobs store and refresh every 15 to 20 seconds. If you are willing to sit there for around 20 minutes or so, you will see when the restock happens for yourself but it will vary from restock to restock, so there is no fixed pattern.
Each role has different requirements which can be a mixture of crime skills, battle stats, work stats and other hidden stats that may not be obvious or discovered just yet. In every scenario there are a number of checkpoints which are pass or fail, depending on the player involved and RNG as well. Some roles in a scenarios will be more weighted, having to pass more checkpoints than other roles. If you fail more than 3 checkpoints then your crime will probably fail. Also, if you fail less than 3 checkpoints you may succeed but get a lesser payout than a clean run. Some checkpoints are more critical than others, especially in regard to payouts. If you have low crime skill you are best sticking to the roles that have the lowest number of critical checkpoints for now and keep building your crime stats, battle stats, job stats and generally, just do things that are normal gameplay as it could help.
How you spend your merits is up to you, depending on how you play and what you are trying to achieve in the future. You get one free reset every year, so you change things around if you find out you made some mistakes or just want to try something different.
I just glanced at your profile, and I can see that you aren't really interested in PvP events, so I can understand why you would prefer the old town event over the current Halloween event. But I think you would be in a slim minority on this one because the current Halloween event is probably the most popular Torn event that I know of.
I did do the old Halloween Town once, many years ago. I was a newbie and I didn't really know what I was doing and to be honest, I can't really remember too much about it. I remember that I got some candy and I sold it and made some money, but it wasn't very memorable beyond that. It was some kind of maze? I don't really remember much at all.
I don't think that most players would prefer it over the current event. That's just my view and to be honest, I don't think much of Christmas town either. I participate and collect some good stuff but beyond that, it just gets in the way of doing what I normally do, which is training, doing crimes and travelling. But I may be biased because at Christmas I am normally pretty busy with real life stuff so playing Torn is something I do on a limited basis at that time.
You really should try and join in the current event. There are plenty of low-level inactive players that you can fight, and look at upgrading your basket so that you can get the most out of it. Most factions use Halloween as a chaining event as well and then there are various merits that you might pick up as well from winning streak to weapon use and more. Torn is more of a PvP game than Torn City was but that is the way it has evolved, mainly because that's what most players want.
There is this line from the newspaper article, which you quoted: "Items are usually bought back for around 75% of their purchase cost". The key word there would be usually, which means most of the time, but not always.
Ched had this hamster, and this hamster used to like to run on it's wheel. It would run really fast and almost all day and night. So Ched got to thinking that there must be some way to put all that energy to work and maybe make a few pounds out of it as well. So he hooked up the hamster wheel to a small generator, built a knocked together server out of spare parts, and decided to make a game.
First up, he tried to draw some pictures on paint, but they weren't very good and he couldn't figure out how to make them animated, so he shifted to making a text-based game instead, because there were still some of those around back then and they seemed to be making some money. So Torn City was born and slowly the number of nerds players built up as word spread from basement to basement and across the interweb that something sort of like some other games but sort of different, was out there.
The hamster was happy because now he had a purpose in life and Ched was happy because he had people to play his game with and the player base, well, they weren't so happy. They have never really been happy and that has never changed.
Next week I will tell you about when Ched sold his soul to the Devil, who is a player who has quit, but hasn't fully quit (it's rumored that if you say his name three times, he will post in the forums).
I have been watching results in my faction and I am getting a feeling that if members have too high a success percentage, it may be detrimental to the result. I know it is counter-intuitive, but it just seems like if percentages of the group get too high there is more chance of a failure. My suggestion is that it might be worth trying higher level crimes, so that percentages are within a range of 65 to 75% and see if there is any improvement in results.
Personally, I think it's really dumb to start using drugs as a newbie.
My reasoning is that you can end up like this, with high drug addiction and an OD on top of that. Your hospital time is not such an issue as there are plenty of revivers around but your happy is zeroed out, which will negatively impact your gym gains for a while. Speaking of gym gains, as a 5-day old level 6, your gym gains are tiny and using Xanax is really a waste of money because you just aren't getting enough out of it to make it worthwhile.
Also, with high addiction you might get kicked out of your education course and you may be forced to use drugs to be able to access the Gym to train in; if you have high addiction and try to train you may fail to train if you don’t have an active drug icon. Your company director may also decide to kick you as your employee effectiveness is greatly reduced.
If you stop using drugs addiction levels will reduce by 20 points each day.
Nudist just means that you don't have any pieces of armor when you fight. Alcoholic just means that you have been drinking beer or other alcoholic drinks to raise your nerve. Your title is governed by what you do in the game the most. If you want to change it, change what you do but I wouldn't worry about it too much. It will change anyway; that's just the way it is.
Restock times vary from 2 hours to 4 hours but also out past 6 hours sometimes and as stated, usually it's only 3 but sometimes it can be 2 items restocked. So they will sell instantly, which makes them non-viable as an import item, unless you are willing to sit and wait with constant focus on the screen, waiting for the restock. Even then, you will probably still miss out.
"Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."
