What about rules? I’m sure you’re most eager to know what guidelines will be keeping this competition from deteriorating into total anarchy. Well here they are:
Rules
Daily questions and tasks must be completed by 23:59 TCT of the day they are assigned
All daily questions, daily tasks, and other submissions must be posted in thread
Daily tasks must be posted to thread in the manner specified on that particular day (links, screenshots, etc)
Submissions for daily questions must be a minimum of 3-4 sentences and use some basic semblance of grammar/punctuation (not a disqualifying factor but give a bit of effort)
No fighting, arguing, whining, complaining, feuding, trolling, scamming or catfishing.
Final decisions on competition are to be made by staff
Don’t bother trying to cheat the system- Dr. SullenGenius’s NSA Script catches and incinterates all falsified data.
That’s not so bad, right? We’re barely even touching police state level authoritarianism.
In addition, we have an amazing new feature this year- our very own discord channel!
Have no idea that that is? That’s fine, I suck at discord too.
Here’s a quick run-through of everything you need to know.
Now I’m sure that’s a lot of information we just threw at you, but don’t worry. Just like in previous events, we have brought back the much beloved “tl;dr” section.
tl;dr FAQ
Why should I even bother doing this?
Excellent question! There’s tons of reasons why participating is in your best interest!
Every aspect of this event is designed to teach new players important skills and help them improve their overall gameplay
This is an opportunity to interact and form connections with older players who can continue to provide help and advice for you on your journey even after the week is over
Prizes! Loads of them! Every day!
Why are you doing this?
Pure, benevolent, unadulterated philanthropy with absolutely no ulterior motive! We just believe strongly in helping new players!
...okay so I may use the data from participation rates in these events to support my ongoing study of how to increase player retention through different types of assistance-providing interventions, but it’s 99% altruism I swear.
Am I eligible to participate?
You are eligible if you are between the ages of 14-70 (on the day you sign up) and if you are not a restart.
When does the competition start?
The competition runs August 19th-August 25th
What do I do after I sign up?
Be impatient while waiting for August 19th!
Does my API key give you access to my student debt/ Is this a kidney-stealing scam?
No. Your API key is kept confidential through a series of automatic computer battle robots who don’t need kidneys. Learn more HERE.
How are my stats tracked with this program?
Um… ask Dr. SullenGenius for specifics, but it does it automatically and sends us a spreadsheet of the results (your API key is not revealed through that process- none of us have access to it.
How do I join the discord channel?
Follow the instructions here.
Can’t people cheat the bazaar sales stats?
Nope! Dr.SullenGenius’s script picks up on shady business practices that may artificially inflate your scores.. How does it do that? Well… with robots? Hold on let me ask him.
Dr.SullenGenius: “It records all of your bazaar sales.”
Okay it records your bazaar sales so we can see if you’re selling a million beers for $1 each
What is the difference between the daily task and the daily question?
Every day there will be a question posted that you can respond to on the thread for prizes. Also every day there will be a task posted that you will complete with the staff member of the day for additional prizes. Both are optional.
Can I post my answer/do the task late/early?
Nope! Daily means daily.
What if I don’t have money for points for Daily Task 5?
Fortunately the prize for the Day 5 Daily Question is coincidentally the same amount you would need to be able to complete the Day 5 Daily Task!
Can I participate in more than one areas?
You can participate in as many or as little areas of competition as you want.
What if I don’t have a bazaar?
Then just participate in either one or both of the User Activity and Battle Stat areas.
Do I have to do the Daily Questions and Daily Tasks?
Nope, you are free to pick and choose what you want to participate in. However, there are special prizes for those who complete all seven days of the daily questions and daily tasks.
Can I win prizes in more than one area?
You can only win ONE prize, even if participating in multiple areas. This was changed due to the number of participants.
When do we get our prizes?
Daily prizes will be given out daily as questions are answered and tasks are completed. Final prizes will be given out the week after the competition ends and all the scores are tallied up.
Still with us? Fantastic. We’ve saved the best for last- introductions from our lovely competition staff volunteers!
While each staff member is responsible for different areas of the competition, we are all fully qualified and eager to help you with any questions or problems that might come up so feel free to contact any of us that are online on Torn or on discord when you need help!
Without further ado, here are our fantastic staff volunteers for this year’s competition:
Staff Volunteer Introductions
Actuariolam [1967959]
“What’s up n00bs, I’m Actuariolam. I’m in charge of fun stuff like sending you prizes and answering your questions but also boring stuff like tracking data and making spreadsheets and answering your questions. Ask me anything!”
sullengenie [1946152]
“Your mother’s maiden name is Stevenson. And I’m sullengenie. That is all.”
rainbowsaurus [1884204]
“Hello, I am a 12'7" multicolored dinosaur looking for love. I like long walks on the beach, Rick Astley songs, and helping new players join discord lottos! Let’s talk more on the Day 7 Daily Task ;)”
Xanet [2007324]
“Hello, I’m Xanet. I’ll be helping with the day 2 task, and if you need help with anything else feel free to pm/message me and I’d be happy to help you out.”
CrimsonXray [2011902]
“Hello fresh fish! The day will soon come where you will need to know the ins and outs of the points market and how to operate it without lookin like a dummy AND I’m here to help ya with that and possibly even try to turn a bit of a profit in the process.”
Mr_Mestopheles [2048355]
“Greetings & salutations. Warring and chaining are my speciality. Information on the finer points of these and target selection can greatly improve your win/loss ratio. I look forward to assisting you with any questions, queries and doubtful points you may have.”
Hcom3 [2003693]
“Hey, i'm Hcom3, i'll be helping out with the day 4 task. Hopefully I won't lose too much money against you all. If you guys have any questions, DM me, and i'll always be happy to answer!”
AjtheWabbit [1981569]
“Hey new citizens! I’m the wabbit, I am here to answer any questions you may have, you will also have to chat me to perform your first daily task :) DM me when you’re ready and we will get the ball going!”
Wadertx [2025939]
“Hey y’all, I am here to help in anyway I can. I think Boot Camp is a fantastic way to figure out your way around Torn, and all it has to offer. Feel free to send me a DM any time you have questions or need help”
Quilogy [2083745]
“Quilogy here. I’m both happy and honored to be helping Actuariolam with this event. I’m more than willing to lend out a hand to new players in most regards, as well. Day 6, you’re mine. Be ready to get your learn on. We’re going to Torn like Natalie Imbruglia.”
Josephine [1923258]
“Hello, I’m a weenie, you can call me Jose. I love seeing noobs grow and would gladly answer any of your questions! If you need help with understanding anything, I’ll happily be there for you.”
Proph [2113912]
“Noobs and Noobettes, welcome to Torn. Technically, I’m still a noob and not much older than many of you. However I love seeing new players grow quickly and I’m always here to assist and answer any questions - just hit me up! And remember the 5 P’s of Torn (Patience, People, Planning, Procurement and Patience again)”
ash1soccer [2106899]
"Greetings fellow Torn residents! I am ash1soccer (but you can call me ash). I am fairly new to the game as well but I've focused heavily on learning the game mechanics, so if you have any questions about how things work feel to reach. One word of warning though: be prepared to tell me when to stop, because if you let me I'll explain things so in-depth that you'll end up forgetting your original question :p"
y010swag [2095726]
“Hey, noobs! yoloswag here to help out with any questions you may have. I was one of the winners of the new player faction nomination competition hosted earlier this year, and I enjoyed it so much I wanted to help out other new players. Feel free to ask for advice for help, and I’ll do my best to get you where you need to be.”
And of course, you can always just hop on over to our discord channel and shout your question for all the world (in the channel) to hear and answer.
Finally, here is where you will scroll down to check the links below to ensure you have been counted amongst the participants on the official spreadsheet after you sign up.
(please allow 6-8 hours for updates/shipping/handling in case staff are busy)
Since we have so many signups, we have decided to split the participants into groups based on networth.
There are two main groups made up of 75 people each and then a third group made up of the top 15 participants with the highest networth- we decided to break up the groups by networth so that everyone would be competing against others with similar availability of resources. Group 3 (the 15 players) will be competing in the area of user activity ONLY for 1 prize of 25 edvds and a 30 day rent-free PI.
No changes to the competition/prizes for groups 1 and 2. Group 3 is also free to participate in the daily questions/tasks if they want.
These sheets will track signups/referrals, daily task/question participation and main competition progress.
