I haven't seen a proper guide on addiction and rehab decay so figured I'd share the work I did together with Wiber over a year ago. It was made for him to use the data to write a comprehensive guide and post it but that bastard quit so I just left it.... until now. This is what we managed to gather before he left. Enjoy!
If you are new to rehab and addiction I suggest you also give Wulfric's guide a read, it has some good stuff.
If you'e in the UK and Imgur no longer works, go here
Addiction
So what's addiction in the world of Torn? Every time you take a drug you will gain some addiction points (AP). As you build up addiction you will build up negative side effects (the getting kicked from education, losing job efficiency, not being able to train without being under the influence of drugs and battle stat reduction). The AP testing for each drug is done with addiction XXV. Because of rounding I can only estimate the AP gain without specials. Love juice is based on numbers from the wiki, since I wasn't able to test that.
To get rid of your addiction you can: - Wait for natural decay to do it's thing. Natural decays takes away 20 AP per day. When I made the guide it was 21 AP so all calculations are made with 21 AP as natural decay. Allegedly happens somewhere between 2am-4am but haven't tested this personally -The job special available in a Flower shop, Cruise line agency or nightclub will take away 1 AP per job point. - Go to rehab in Switzerland.
Building up addiction without rehabbing will give you a passive stat reduction. The battle stat reduction is directly related to the amount of addiction points you have built up. The only thing that will reduce it is the side effects (Reduces passive negatives from drugs and addiction by up to 30%) faction upgrade under that toleration branch. The intervals at which you hit a certain battle stat reduction with the side effects special active seem a bit random. For example it will take almost more than twice the addiction points to reach 20% battle stat reduction with side effects upgrade even if it only reduces negative effects by 30%?! That is because the reduction is on the percentage itself and not the addiction points needed to reach it. So 20% reduction with side effects is the same as having 28% reduction without upgrades.
If you're interested it follows the equation: 143*EXP(x/12). with x being the battle stat reduction in %.
Here's a graph showcasing the difference the side effects upgrade makes.
How long does it take to reach a certain reduction level? This depends on your xanax intake and faction specials. Tables below show how long it will take to reach a certain battle stat reduction level depending on your toleration level and xanax usage.
One lesser known fact about rehab is that the more you use it the less effective it becomes. In the beginning one rehab will remove around 90 AP (not 100% on this number but it's around there) and by the end one rehab will remove 1 AP. This is known around my condo as the rehab cap. This means that to begin with getting rid of the addiction from 1 xanax will cost just under 100k and at the cap it will cost 8.75m (90 times more!).
What we do know is that it's directly related to the amount of times you have rehabbed. And since rehabs done is a visible stat since September 2015 I've been able to give a decent estimation of rehab decay. Thanks to the players with varying amounts of rehabs done that helped me with this!
NOTE: If you have rehabbed before September 2015 you can't estimate your rehab cost from your rehabs done stat
Once you have reached a certain amount of rehabs you will reach a rehab cap. That is the point when your rehab efficiency stops decaying and your rehab will never be more expensive than this. This will happen when the cost of one xanax is 8.75m (or 1 rehab per AP). That point seems to end up around 20,000 rehabs.
The table below will show you how long it takes to reach the rehab cap depending on how many xanax you are taking, your toleration level and if you're using job points to reduce addiction. Assuming you are using rehab perfectly (not wasting any natural decay and never fully rehabbing).
Example of how your yearly rehab cost grows. Year 8 being where you hit the cap if taking 3 xanax per day. [image: i.imgur.com]
Another interesting way of looking at cost breakdowns once you have reached the rehab cap: With no toleration perks each Xanax will cost the user 8.75m on top of the cost of Xanax. With full toleration perks each Xanax will cost the user 4.5m. With full toleration and max rehab reduction (20%) each Xanax will cost 3.6m.
Books
There are two books you can read to deal with addiction, here's my advice on how to use them most efficiently
Hot Turkey
Effect: Gain no drug addiction for 31 days.
Value of the book at the rehab cap: 418.5m (3 xanax per day and max toleration assumed)
Before reading this book you should consider two things 1. Use it at a time where you can take as many xanax as possible to fully max out the potential of the book 2. Since you won't gain any addiction for the whole month you should build up addiction before reading the book to make use of natural decay.
Note: You will be kicked out of education and won't be able to join a new course for most of the month. Your employer will also hate you if you aren't miles above the stat requirements. Note: The reduction is based on you having Side effects X and Addiction XXV, your faction should have it. If they don't, complain! :)
Table shows how much battle stat reduction you should build up before starting to read the book to fully make use of natural decay. The number is dependent on how many rehabs you have done (you can find this in your personal stats). [image: i.imgur.com]
Over 31 days you will lose 21*31=651 AP. So you need to build up at least that much addiction.I have added some room for going to rehab to restore happiness after an overdose. Since you should really max out your xanax usage while using this book I have assumed you need 3 rehabs i.e. 3 overdoses. Taking 93 xanax while reading the book you're about 88% sure to overdose 3 times or less assuming a 2% OD rate. If you want extra safety, build up some more addiction!
The reason it is different depending on how many rehabs you've done is once again rehab decay. Your rehab is more efficient the fewer rehabs you've done and therefore will remove more addiction if you rehab once to restore happiness. Resulting in you having to build up more addiction before you use the book.
Milk yourself sober
Effect: Removes a substantial amount of drug addiction upon completion.
Value of the book at the rehab cap: 235m per month of building addiction
The data for this book comes from me using the book, Magikarp, and Tig_Rock.
This book removes ~95% of your addiction regardless of addiction level!
Assuming there's no actual cap to how much addiction it removes we can estimate a value of the book. At the rehab cap while using 3 xanax per day this is the amount of savings you can get using the book after x amount of time building up addiction:
Keep or increase. Money kept on hand shouldnt be safe.
However i think traders are a bit screwed atm so it would , in my opinion, be a good idea to add short time cashier checks for bazaar sales. Maybe around an hour or even less. Gives a chance to buy out items for mugs but also gives a chance for the traders to hide the cash.
Nobody asked for it but here you go, if the formula i approximated way back is accurate and Satan here continues to take about 2.5 xanax per day we can expect to see him reach 50% reduction in as little as 63 years or during Trump's 18th term.
Your faction specials and merit allocation will play a huge factor in this. I believe the calculation I did assumes you have maxed out faction specials and merits.
Addiction mitigation (reduce the negative effects that addiction causes by up to 20%
Toleration branch - Side effects (Reduces the side effects of drugs and increases addiction mitigation by up to 30%)
Toleration branch - Addiction (Reduces drug addiction gain by up to 50%)
Addiction points as a function of battle stat reduction: AP(x) = 143e^(x/12).
x is the Battle stat reduction in % before modifiers.
As an example:
To reach 40% addiction without any merits or factions specials would take 4,009 AP but with maxed merits and specials it would take 112,366 AP (since you'd have to reach a "raw" battle stat reduction without modifiers of 80% to see 40% reduction after faction specials and merits do their thing, assuming they're additive). That's 28 times more addiction.
But we haven't considered the addiction faction special yet. If you munch on 2.5 xanax per day you will gain 35*2.5 = 87.5 AP per day. With max faction specials that is 18*2.5 = 45 AP per day. There is also a daily natural decay of 20 AP meaning the difference is actually 67.5AP vs 25 AP gain per day. that is a difference of 67.5/25 = 2.7 times longer to build up the same addiction points.
Combining both it will take 28*2.7 = 75.6 times longer to reach 40% battle stat reduction with maxed specials vs no specials.
Nobody asked for it but here you go, if the formula i approximated way back is accurate and Satan here continues to take about 2.5 xanax per day we can expect to see him reach 50% reduction in as little as 63 years or during Trump's 18th term.

Excellent work so far! I was hoping someone would properly grab onto this now that activity logs exist and make it more do-able to grab accurate data. BoonieSteep also landed at 60AP as a starting rehab effectiveness and that data looked solid.
I never gathered enough or accurate enough data to derive a formula but my best guess is that it looks something like this: y = k/(1+x/t)
y = rehab effectiveness in AP per rehab
k = initial rehab effectiveness (60)
x = rehabs done
t = "decay factor" i.e rehabs it takes to half initial effectiveness. This number is around 400. I believe Ched mentioned this sometime way back. I might have a screenshot of it somewhere.
A "stepping" function would suggest there is some rounding going on somewhere and also would explain why it was hard to get a nice curve fit with the small data set I had. Stochastic rounding to further mess with you is also a possibility but not sure that is something that Torn did a lot of back when they introduced rehab decay.
Waking up at 5 AM to get ready for work, I take my usual sip of coffee, only to be greeted by the news of a revive cartel forming. Our funds are already drying up and now this. Ugh.
I head off to my 9-to-5, trying to shake off the thought of the brewing storm. But as soon as I get home, there it is. A message waiting for me. Another Cartel, this time reaching out to recruit me to some magno smelling (PT-Torntuga) C-tier faction. Can't wait to see what the cartel hits us with tomorrow.
This is very sad to hear. He was always a good presence in Monarch. It's extremely rare to see someone so unwaveringly loyal and reliable to a faction family.
Reading the chronicles was always a joy, as was agreeing on how awesome Ghost is.
That's really cool data! Thanks for sharing. Largest build-up of addiction i've seen from anyone using that book. Definitely pointing in the direction that there is no cap on how much addiction it removes :)
