This idea is a win for experienced players, a win for new players and a win for Torn. Let me explain.
We have a whole unofficial rental market of high end weapons and armor but it requires large amounts of collateral that newer (and some older) players just don't have. Why not use a mechanic much like loaning an item from a faction armory but allow it between any two parties?
Player has (for example) EOD armor and wants to rent it out for 1m per day. He puts it on the rental market (not unlike a rental property) and any player can rent it WITHOUT becoming the actual owner of the item. The agreed rental period is accepted by the renter and the rental amount is paid up front. When the rental period ends, the items are automatically returned to the owner (or the owner can recall them like faction weapon if you prefer).
Now, for the benefit of renting their stuff out risk free, the owners of the items pay a percentage to Torn which creates a money sink.
Owners get to make money from their high-end gear, lower NW players get access to premium gear and Torn gets to remove some money from the economy to assist with inflation control. Win-Win-Win.
So I acquired a gold egg last year and it has sat taunting me in my inventory (and now my display case) ever since. I know how lucky I am to have found this; I have received an opportunity to gain 1% to all of my battle stats but at the same time received an existential dilemma.
No matter what day I use this egg, it will always be better to be use it tomorrow. When will I be satisfied with the return on using this precious item? How long can I hold out? Bigger will always be better for this so then I'm led to consider how long I will live for. If I use it today and live for another 50 years will I lament the decision to use that gold egg all the way back in 2025? If I die tomorrow will I regret my reticence to use this wonderous item for the rest of eternity?
When is the payoff big enough to warrant the use of the Golden Egg?
How long will I be playing Torn for?
How will I live for?
This is the curse of the golden egg.
EDIT: I caved today the 14th of June, 2025 and used my Golden Egg. I feel relieved that the pressure to make a decision will no longer bear down on me. Now, I will only be haunted by questions of whether I made the right decision.
I'd love to be able to purchase an improvement to my vault that would allow me to divide it in half for my spouse and myself. I don't want to download more add-on's to try and keep track of money in and out of our shared vault and would rather section it in two and let my spouse and I have our own private sections. Perhaps just multiple vaults per property if sectioning the vault is too much?
IRL When I was married I always kept a secret stash of cash that the husband didn't know about and I would like to do the same in my Torn life.
I sent a PI and over a billion cash to someone I barely know. As I pressed the button I told myself that I am either the biggest fool in Torn or a shrewd investor.
It makes sense to enlist the services of a property improver with the right job and stock blocks to receive a hefty discount when you fully upgrade a PI. Mug was my go-to for this, she would simply trade me a fully upgraded PI for my basic PI plus cash. When Mug retired from the property upgrading game I was informed that her protégé was a player named vageuly (not be confused with VaguelyCanadian) a player best-known as Ms Torn 2023.
The initial transaction back in January didn't go as planned:
Fast forward to today and I see that vageuly is still operating and I start researching:
Friend to enemy count is an impressive 144 friends to 8 enemies
I see that she belongs to the respectable faction WTF
I note that the property business has been running continuously since I spoke with her in January
The reviews on her ad in the property forum are largely from faction-mates so I get a little worried until I find enough from other players outside of her faction
Mug has posted on said forum post to confirm legitimacy
The vibe of our interactions was good and my gut instinct was to trust this person.
So I decided to do it. I opened a trade and sent an unimproved PI and over a billion Torn dollars to someone I hoped wouldn't rip me off and laugh while they had a money bath on a PI that previously belonged to me. My heart was in my throat and I could hear my own pulse in my ears after she accepted the trade. The stress was enormous, the seconds felt like minutes and the minutes felt like tens of minutes while I waited to find out if I was the biggest sucker in Torn.
At 03:02:51 on 12/05/25 vageuly accepted my PI and money for nothing in a trade At 03:11:49 on 12/05/25 vageuly gave you their Private Island property with 4,225 maximum happiness
Huzzah! Faith in humanity is raised +1
The 5th stat in Torn is often cited as Karma and sometimes as money. Could trust (or reputation) be 5th, 6th or 7th stat? While I have no idea how to quantify this stat, I hold out hope that it is at least as powerful as the "heart" ring in Captain Planet. The lesson here is to do research on the people you are doing business with and definitely don't make quick decisions when the money is a significant amount to you.
As promised - here is the blueprint on how to scam me:
1. Join a reputable faction that doesn't have a long history of supporting sordid scammers like you
2. Link yourself to a trusted member of the community (bonus points if they are a committee member or staff) 3. Establish a business that I would be interested in spending money with
4. Keep that business running for at least 5 months with positive reviews from people in your faction and others
5. Maintain a low enemy to friend count
6. Have pleasant interactions with me and don't put pressure on
7. Then when you have my money 5 months later - PROFIT!
How do you gauge who is worthy of trust? Have you taken a big risk by putting faith in someone?
TLDR: I sent a PI and over $1B cash to a property improver and they DIDN'T rip me off!
I always test traders the first few times I trade with them. I send a bunch of random things and double check that they are paying what their price list says. You were 100% legit Heart so you passed my test!
I kept getting warnings about having too many items in my inventory - to SHUT THE SYSTEM UP I got help from Korrvack . He paid good prices, was fast and polite with plenty of money to take bulk items.
Easy to deal with! No mugging, all safe with this trader.
I would! I'd liquidate all of my IRL assets and stock up on: boxing gloves, skateboards, parachutes and dumbells. Relatively low cost IRL and then I'd be mega rich in Torn.
I guess I'd also pile up bags of sand from the beach IRL assuming I didn't have a limit on what I take with me.
