Someone asked me a similar question cuz they wanted to make a Torn news article about me. I assume what I had to say was not appropriate for an article as I never heard back, but here was my response.
When I started playing, I quickly realized I had 0 interest in the competitive PvP aspect of it. I found myself helping my friends with runaways/losses instead, or hosting games in Fun and Games with runs/losses as a reward. I've always been more for a "work together" type game than a PvP one. I really enjoyed helping other players, until half my friends retired, the other half didn't need losses, and the players in Fun and Games got really spoiled...
I eventually found that I didn't like playing the game at all, yet I was still playing it out of pure addictive habit. I wanted to spend my time on something I actually found fun, or something productive instead. Also, I was wanting to start college, so I had to quit.
I eventually came back again, just because I wanted to check in on my old friends. I also had the self control to not get back into the habit of playing, so it was okay. Oh yeah, and college is going well. :P I have no regrets, and it's funny to see that I'm helping players by doing absolutely nothing.

Here's some old art for people who don't like Pokemon, but I'm currently learning how to draw on a 3DS instead of just on paper. It's an interesting challenge having a reference image (and using color), compared to having a real life object as a reference.
Yes, I've played off and on since Lich King. Unlike BfA and SL, DF's beta and plot actually look somewhat promising. Still cautiously pessimistic, though.
Not OP but I learned from some Youtube video that the base definition was basically just, "having a fondness for anthropomorphic animals," which I realize applied to me since I loved such characters in media compared to regular human characters.
The two of four furry friends I have who have names for their sonas chose Merlot and Orion, which I suppose are unique but not oddly spelled. Mine's named Max, since I thought the name Maximillian was fun to say as a child.
I don't often see spellings like that, curious. Perhaps they are trying to sound more like a fantasy race? Or perhaps it's to express individuality, since that's what sonas are usually for.
I have played it since I was a wee lad, though bad posture while playing LoLK gave me permanent repetitive motion strain.
The new game is fun, though I was surprised how differently you play it from the others. Going back and "achievement/gold farming" makes this game feel more like Hades than Touhou!
I'm quite fond of doing island plate maps with as many AI as possible and seeing if I can win as each civ at least once. I've learned to turn off that diplomatic victory, though. Sucks losing purely from RNG...
