[Script] Crimes 2.0 - Pickpocket JARVIS · · 8 likes

Since the script author is inactive, I debugged the script a little. The issue is that the player's current crime skill is not being detected properly so the script assumes the player has no crime skill and defaults to only 100% targets as Ideal.

This can be fixed by adjusting line 331 to the following:

currentSkillLevel = document.getElementsByClassName('slick-slide')[0].children[0].children[0].children[0].children[1].textContent;

Namely remove the '+' in front of 'document' and change the last children[] index from '2' to '1'.

Mismatched User and Faction Bust Success Chance · · 0 likes

I'm currently posting this with TornTools enabled, but the problem is also seen without TornTools enabled.

My faction has the Bust Skill VIII upgrade assigned to increase bust success chance by 40%:

However, my Personal Perks widget shows only "Faction: + 30% bust success chance":

This is also mismatched in the API as well.

I assume to some extent?

I'm not quite sure about the mechanics of how it registers time played. I am pretty active in general but I've also lost a small amount of card skimmers when I'm less active than usual. Yet the playtime rate doesn't appear to change during those times while I have a browser up.

EDIT: Regarding the OS/browser comments above, I primarily play on a Mac using Firefox Nightly. I also use Debian with Firefox (previously Chromium).

As mentioned by Lewri, a Discord bot is one option, which would be an application that runs continuously. A slightly simpler option is scheduling a python script to run periodically via something like cron. You can output the data in a variety of ways, from a CSV like you have, Discord channel embeds as a bot or via POST to a webook, updating a Google Sheets document, and more.

Bots/scheduled applications are ideally run on a machine that is usually online 24/7. You can achieve this with cloud-hosted options (like a small VM on GCP, AWS, etc) or self-hosting where something like a Raspberry Pi can come in handy.

Joining big factions as a new player is a bad idea · · 2 likes

I do agree with your main points, which is why I called out stacking as the exception.

However, not every new player can afford regular, consistent happy (eDVD) jumps. For those that can't, stacking would end around 38k-50k in a stat for candy jumps to transition to Energy training. So Energy void does matter for those players (like me).

Joining big factions as a new player is a bad idea · · 9 likes

I agree that new players should consider their play style and match it to their faction. I disagree with your assessment that new players should set the bar low. There are plenty of high respect, higher ranked factions that are chill. There are good lower respect factions out there, but players should be aware of what they're giving up in exchange for whatever is being offered.

Excursion (Travel Capacity) is only one part of income. Total travel capacity of 29 items alone will cover the daily basics of a PI rental and 3 Xanax per day with a refill, with a small amount of profit left over. While it is important as it helps a new player become self-sufficient without a lot of effort, it is not the real highlight of faction perks.

Besides, the example of South Africa you used was not great due to energy void. While you might get a little more profit for the time in SA, Energy is the most precious resource in Torn. In my opinion, a new player shouldn't go to any long haul locations for profit unless they're stacking.

Toleration is probably the most important set of faction upgrades for a meta that revolves around drug use and is something most new players don't think about. As someone prior has mentioned, rehab costs are a real consideration as you progress in the game. It seems like nothing now, but it's a cost that adds up over time. Time is money, especially in a long-scale game like Torn, and every additional OD or side effect that impacts your ability to win and progress adds up in the background. Toleration has more of an impact on your income than you probably think.

Regarding wars - a new player can make a difference in a war even when there are no war targets for them, like helping with group assists and making non-war hits to keep a chain alive. While it's unfortunate you weren't given directions, it's also a two-way street. Did you ask questions before your war?

Wars at higher ranks also give higher rewards and that shouldn't be discounted either. And while wars are a good source of income, they can also be detrimental to a new player's growth if done too frequently.

All of the above is to say that your argument is based on only two factions and wars when you first started playing, and you did not even spend enough time there to understand how their perks impact your growth on a longer time-scale.

Personally, I think I've done pretty well in the mid-sized (your "big") faction that I'm in. I joined as a green leaf at around 2.6m respect and it's now 3m respect. The faction perks do matter and I wouldn't be where I am without them. And frankly, I could be in a higher respect faction and likely have a little more progression.

However, I know what I gain and what I'm giving up by being where I am. But most new players don't know that and telling them to start low is just bad advice - that's stunting their potential growth before they've even really gotten started.

Faction Tree Simulator Down until further notice · · 1 like

This is a great tool, and much faster and easier to use than the simulators on Torn Stats and YATA.

FYI, I installed this on my Mac using Crossover (which is based on Wine). The following information should be helpful for others:

I initially ran into some issues when trying to install this into a Windows 10 or 11 bottle - I kept on running into an error stating an issue with registering urlmon.dll. A peek into the installation error log showed the following:

LoadLibrary() failed while registering file 'C:windowssystem32urlmon.dll'

You can click "Ignore" on this error and finish installation. The program will start up, but will fail when trying to pull faction information after entering the API key.

To resolve this, launch the Wine Configuration window for the bottle and go over to the Libraries tab. Scroll down the list till you find "urlmon.dll", which will likely show "(native, builtin)" next to it. Click on "urlmon.dll" then the "Edit..." button to update the setting to "Builtin then Native". Click "Ok", then "Apply".

The program should work now after relaunching it.

I had issues getting this to work on (iOS) PDA as well. Sometimes I'd see the hamburger menu, but more often than not I didn't so I had this script disabled on PDA for awhile.

I just tried reinstalling this script by using Kwack's installer that inserts GMforPDA into the script itself. Now it works much more consistently.

This is a great illustration on doing the math to figure out the best happy you can afford for your money due to fluctuating market costs.

I remember the original version of this particular guide, which helped me as a newbie several months ago. I ended up creating a quick little sheet that would calculate the happy per dollar for each candy based on MV to help with my purchasing decisions.

While there are jumps in other guides that may be more optimal than what is listed here, for varying definitions of optimal, it's good to have the less-discussed options laid out with their pros and cons to help people make an informed decision, even if it's just showing why a particular jump is bad.

Cool and useful addition to the tools you've published so far.

As some feedback, I've found that the visual elements of your site tend to be quite large and I have to zoom out (down to 50%) as a result. This is generally not a problem as it is personal preference.

However, no matter the zoom level, the tables appear to be fixed-width so there's horizontal scrolling if I have all columns enabled in Matched or Raw views even if all columns are auto-resized.

Is it possible to adjust the table so that it's allowed to fill in the empty space on either side of the table and reduce the need for horizontal scrolling?

Not legal to skip the confirmation as far as I'm aware of.

However, if you use Torn PDA, you can double-tap the house/home icon to fly back instead of having to click the link and then the confirmation.

It's also recommended to set a separate timer - I wouldn't depend on app or API-based notifications since there's often a delay. 15 seconds is more than enough to buy and fly back.

Great tool.

However, for our latest war, I noticed that it hasn't been reporting all cans/boosters used during war even though I've waited to generate a report after daily reset and 24 hours after war to ensure cans/boosters are reflected in public stats.

how to get the loan shark merit? ·

I don't recall the max loan amount as I didn't have the forethought to note it down when I first took out the loan.

However, it couldn't have been very high since I took out the loan 5 days after I first started the game for the merit. I'd guess it was under $100k, but maybe best to ask a green leaf with decent crime progress around that age for a better estimate.

My current max loan limit is 8.75m at 176 days. I've taken out no other loans other than the $5k one.

There was one thread I came across that had several posts cautioning against increasing the size of the loan (besides overdue property fees) as that anecdotally seemed to reset a timer for the honor bar. I did not pay back any of the principal or increase the loan while going for the honor bar for that reason.

You do not need to take out max loan, it's a waste of money. Take out a small amount - I did $5k - and pay the fee every week when you get the event, not the entire loan. You do not need to increase your loan either. Just be patient.

Took roughly 4 months for me.

19:58:40 - 07/08/24 You increased your loan by $5,000 to a total of $5,000

...

21:31:47 - 11/12/24 You were awarded the honor: Loan Shark

22:44:52 - 11/12/24 You decreased your loan by $5,000 to a total of $0

[Crimes 2.0] Cracking: An In-Depth Guide · · 3 likes

For new players - a strategy for getting the Character Assassination honor bar with no nerve cost is to unlock Cracking via education and start guessing characters while working on building up CE via other crimes in the interim.

Attempt to guess at least one character for each job to roll it over past daily reset. A quick and easy guess is the letter 'a' in the 2nd position because it is the top candidate for character-position frequency across all password lengths when assuming complexity 1 using a 10m list.

I amassed a bunch of jobs and would periodically do batches of more involved guessing. Since I kept my skill low, I did not have to deal with the obstacles of encryption or complexity 2/3 passwords. I was CS 8 with over 400 jobs available when I got the honor bar, but it can be achievable by a player at CS 1.
